Today in Writing History September 25, 1930: Shel Silverstein, American author, poet, illustrator, and songwriter was born (d. 1999). He is perhaps most remembered today for his amusing children’s poetry and fiction, like “The Giving Tree.” However, he also wrote many songs like "One's on the Way" and "Hey Loretta" (which were hits for Loretta Lynn), and "25 Minutes to Go," about a man on Death Row, and "A Boy Named Sue," both made famous by Johnny Cash. He also wrote "The Unicorn," which The Irish Rovers made famous. He also wrote many songs about drugs and sex, like “I Got Stoned and I Missed It,” “Quaaludes Again,” “Masochistic Baby,” and “Freakin’ at the Freaker’s Ball.”
Just got some thrilling news from @kingriverpress that two of my haiku have been accepted for their 'Folk Ku - Issue 2'. Submissions are open until 15 October. Details👇🏽
Autumn leaves swirl down,
Dappled sunbeams dance on vines.
Seeds fall to the ground,
Spices warm the autumn air,
New life waits beneath the eaves.
Due to timezones differences (probably) the prompts for daily haikus come out late on Saturday for me, so I took all the words from last week and put them into a tanka.
I say that I make things; poems, essays, collages. I'm not sure that's true. Words, sentence, and paper scraps. None of it is mine. None of it belongs to me. It's found objects. Found things. Things that become a piece of art or writing. When it’s done, it makes sense to put it back where I found it. To give it back to the world. A gift to anyone else looking closely, hoping to find something.
