Poor people probably didn't get a lot of stories published. That's why they don't start: "I was sentenced to three months in the insane asylum for being poor." 🤔

A house in Osterode was once haunted by an ambulatory wall clock.

It's probably for the best that no one started a song-and-dance routine while investigating this house.

I mean, technically, if it’s walking around then does it even count as a wall clock?

Corollary: don’t shake hands with the dead.

@TruthSandwich @germany @folklore This is indeed very important advice, which German folk tales emphasize time and again.

Those who shake the hands of the dead will suffer for it.

@TruthSandwich @austria @folklore Yes, folk stories are shaped by religious beliefs, including those pushed by the authorities.

But we should not discount the agency of folk storytellers. They had their own motivations, and I feel calling these stories "propaganda" is doing them disservice.

TruthSandwich,

@juergen_hubert @austria @folklore

One of their motivations was to spread Christianity.

However, this task usually comes with its own hazards.
