@GraveyardSnoop in my genealogy classes people are often syrprised to learn that consistent soelling of surnames is fairly recent. 16c documents can have 4 or more spellungs of tge same surnane on one parchment. @genealogy

@kwheaton @genealogy Typing all the possibilities into search engines is wrecking me!

What's the largest number of people with identical names you've ever come across in one household?

I've just found a census record in which Margaret Rankin is living with her husband, her sister-in-law Margaret Rankin and several children, including another Margaret Rankin. It must've been a confusing household!

I like this question.

Wish I could answer it.

What I will say is I have a popular name.

@genealogy I teach a genealogy class twice a month at the lical senior center. Yesterday made my day. One of my attendees announced she was leaving for Denmark in 3 days to visit the locations of her ancestors. She saud I was the reason as I helped her to find them. That's what its all about. (I think she's in her 80's!) It's never too late to get started with

@genealogy @geneadons Latest research on 1 person. Always check the ORIGINAL Records. Look at all the pages. Check all you think you know. Many thousands of trees can and are sometimes WRONG. https://wheatonwood.com/2023/12/11/when-records-are-wrong-why-original-research-is-necessary/

Have you tested with Geneanet? They are discontinuing their DNA features on 20 December 2023 and encourage all tested persons to download their raw data.

Johannes Nepomucenus Kottal was born on 4 May 1763 in Albrechtsried, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). My Kottal ancestors lived nearby, so there could be a familial connection.

At age 17, I began a on the surname Kottal but I had no idea how to approach such a study then, so the task was too overwhelming. Now I am starting over. The first step is to sort all my old notes, which I have luckily kept.

Here's a cartoon of the footballing cousin I mentioned yesterday, from the Sports Argus on 23 Feb 1907.

I've also transcribed a long article about his career: https://familytree.thomaspreece.net/public/evt/1/b/f74da5c0dfb1fc04f74c6b8e4b1.html

Been researching some distant cousins again today. The occupations on the censuses are predictable as always: coal miner, coal miner, coal miner, coal miner, professional footballer for Manchester City, coal miner, coal miner... @genealogy @geneadons
