#Willis argues that the activities #Meadows claims he conducted under color of federal law are also forbidden by the #HatchAct because they were also efforts to influence an election in favor of one candidate. The entire point of the Act is to make it clear that federal employees cannot lawfully use their offices to do this. 3/
#Willis goes on to point out that #Meadows himself characterizes all the conduct for which he has been indicted as “political activity” when he argues that this conduct should be protected by the #FirstAmendment and so not subject to criminal prosecution. Willis agrees that the conduct was political; presumably she disagrees that it was protected speech for #1A purposes. Her point: if Meadows’ conduct was political, it cannot lawfully have been conducted under his official authority. 4/
