in 1644, Alice Thornton's sister, Katherine Danby, gave birth to her 15th child at Middleham Castle while her husband was a fugitive in the civil war. Alice, on horseback, nearly drowned in the river en route: 'the poor mare drew up her forefeet & I perceived she did swim' (Book1).
