Republican Waste of Space!

The 118th Congress has few laws to show for its first year

staff like to say that their agency (be it city or state) is like a big boat that's hard to turn, but it's on course to vastly overshoot our budget of a livable planet, and all viable turns don't change that. requires us to dismantle or drastically alter that boat, not just turn the rudder.

bluGill ,
@bluGill@kbin.social avatar

@enobacon When turning a large boat you have to plan ahead and start the turn early. However transit systems in general are not interested in turning the boat. Most transit officials have goals completely unrelated to transit, so they won't make the decisions to start useful turns. And even if that wasn't the case, most transit systems don't have enough money to make a useful change and it isn't in their control to get more (but this is second because there are small changes most can make in their budget that would improve things if they cared to try them).

As GOP voters seem increasingly “meh” on culture war rhetoric, it’s bad news for the politician who has most publicly positioned himself as an anti-woke warrior.

Zoomer finally hit by the realization that she is not the main character, and that the purpose of employment is not to be fun, exciting, or make you famous or important. I really think being raised on e-grifters throughout the 2010s that were almost entirely an artificial product of seven straight years of 0% interest rates did some serious psychological damage to these kids.

@Hoss this bitch is WAY too coddled. i'm not even gonna blame grifters on this one, its her parents fault 100%. ofc its boring thats the most BASIC shit in life, youve NEVER had to do shit you didn't want to? what the fuck. definitely parenting mistake. all zoomers i know pretty much are no coddeled like this but instead the reaction to the society is just depression and struggle and shit, that the shittiest stuff is just treated as okay. THIS is not that this bitch never had to work for anything in her life, she was never told no, god thats just fucking horrible way to raise someone

Over the course of 2023, I became totally radicalized by the fediverse's potential to improve just about everything about our online lives. I wrote about why — and what it'll take to get there: https://www.theverge.com/23990974/social-media-2023-fediverse-mastodon-threads-activitypub

@davidpierce

I mean, yes, sure... but I'm old enough to remember the heady days of the late 80s and early 90s when the Internet was going to usher in an era of unstoppable democratic reform, increases in social equality, and other happy things.

Didn't quite work out the way it was envisioned. And I'm not sure the entrenched surveillance capitalism business model of the Internet is so easy to disrupt.

Your reminder: even Robert E. Lee was against putting up confederate monuments

Many monuments were erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy 50+ years after the war ended

Imagine being this proud of a heritage of slavery and losing.

    Think it is fair to say the Fujian association temple is the biggest and grandest of them all.

    No discounts for daughters (and son-in-law’s and their daughters) of the Hokkien clan from elsewhere though; we had to pay the same UNESCO ticket as everyone else.

    And there’s only one lesson the Swiss ought to give the Germans about rail: INVEST AS MUCH AS THE SWISS.

    The Swiss invest - per inhabitant - about 4x as much per year in the rail network as Germany does. Once Germany does that, rail in Germany will improve.

    *asking for me :)

    bluGill ,
    @bluGill@kbin.social avatar

    @jon Careful, they might decide to learn what to spend money on from the US and end up with projects that cost 7x what they should and thus the investment doesn't bring much for results.

    Various Sino dialectal groups have their respective clan associations/ temples along the same stretch in historic Hoi An.

    This is the flip side of “events in 1975” as a society elder put to us: Chinese education was wiped out after South Vietnam fell, and many Chinese-Vietnamese emigrated out. The few who are left don’t speak Chinese much, although the older generation does. They were quite happy to speak to us in Chinese.

    Lee Kuan Yew is very popular among them, and therefore, Singapore. Don’t think the many multitudes of Singaporean tourists had an actual conversation with them though.

    Hey, it's my today!

    If you enjoyed any of my work, consider, as a birthday gift, making a small donation to your favorite charity (or visit the MutualAid hashtag), calling a family member just to say hi, helping a neighbor with groceries.

    Make someone's day better. ✌️
