Can we help Joy of Joyfully Reveiwed? After her cancer diagnosis over the summer, her friends organized a GFM to help her avoid financial stress over medical debt. Remember: GFM charges fees before disbursing any monies raised, so you can tip ZERO with a clear conscience.

We all know that for many small businesses in the U.S., this Black Friday weekend can be the make or break of holiday season earnings. May I suggest, if you have bookish needs, to check out small independent romance bookstores?

For starters: Love's Sweet Arrow:
"This whole weekend, in store and online, you can get 20% off to get you started on your holiday shopping AND a free gift with purchase! Use the code SHOPSMALL online starting tomorrow!"

https://shop.lovessweetarrow.com/

Shot of one area of the store, showing two comfortable reading chairs in plush brown, with a small side table in between holding books and a ceramic mug. On the walls behind and to both sides, there are pale blue bookcases all full of books.

Reading a contemporary romance where the female lead--supposedly somewhere in her twenties--equates saying "I love you" to someone, with actually feeling love for that person.

And when she mentions this to other people in her life, the nod along as if this weren't the twee-est twee-ing that ever twee-ed.

(this is why I struggle so with contemporary romance)

Randomly thinking about Elzabeth Hoyt, whose website is gone, and who hasn't been around online for three or so years; and about Lisa Kleypas, who hasn't updated her website since before the release of Devil in Disguise two years ago (in fact, her FAQ was updated while she was still writing Chasing Cassandra, which came out in 2020, so it's been at least a full year longer than that).

I hope they are both well.

Ok, if you're in a book club and the book really doesn't speak to you...do you force yourself to finish it?

Maybe a result of being in the middle of a lengthy and serious writing project, but I've bounced out of a lot of books this year, and a lot of them have been from book club. Maybe I should be pushing myself more, but this isn't grad school, so...I don't know.

@bookstodon

@pretensesoup My reading mojo is super fragile these days, so I don't force myself to read something that's not appealing. I often know I may enjoy it at a different time, and so I simply set it aside for that time; if whatever is making it unbearable now will make it unbearable later, I DNF with prejudice.

Life is short, and hard, and sometimes cruel; reading should bring joy not misery.

@pretensesoup The author addresses this in the text: after the dead of Pitt the Younger and the independence of Haiti, the whole world stopped abolitionist work--the fear was that too many free Blacks would do what Haitians had done and overthrow white colonizer powers.

The tide turned again, and soon, but in 1806, yes, there was backlash in the UK--the backlash in the US has never stopped.

As a voracious reader who has a very tight budget and doesn't mind trying new authors: I wish to hell that publishers understood that they would get a lot more of my money, now and in the future, if they made first-in-series books accessible.

If you price all books in a series at $13 or more in digital, you are guaranteeing I won't be able to try, unless I remember to ask at the library.

@romancelandia

herhandsmyhands,
@herhandsmyhands@romancelandia.club avatar

@romancelandia To contrast with the post above, here's what happens when you start an ARC for the second book in a series, and look up the first, and find out it's 99cents: you buy it, knowing nothing about it, on the strength of liking the one you are reading (and are barely 13% in).

The other book I really liked that's 4th in a series but all titles cost $13 and up, digital? Most likely I won't seek them out again.
