THE GREATEST ELIZABETHAN MYSTERY—who killed Amy Robsart, wife of the Queen’s favorite, Robert Dudley?—explored in this intriguingly framed novel that breathes new life into a much-told story. Richly envisioned. B PLUS
#JustFinished Regrettably, I Am About to Cause Trouble, by Aimee McNee
Interesting YA set against the backdrop of the Tudor Court. I had a hard time liking Maude for most of the book, but we obviously weren't supposed to. Yes, growth.
Themes are found family, loyalty, courtesy, and allowing people to be who they are.
LGBTQIA+ positive with hints of societal disapproval.
Race positive with racism in the text.
“Michael Dunn has created the characters that bring the 19th Century's Mine Wars to life for today's readers. Anywhere but Schuylkill will remind readers of John Sayles and Tillie Olsen and the best in the long tradition of labor literature.”
—James Tracy, co-author of Hillbilly Nationalists, Urban Race Rebels and Black Power: Interracial Solidarity in 1960s-70s New Left Organizing
'A Volga Tale' by Guzel Yakhina is a richly imagined and beautifully written novel that tells of a people, of a little man in Big History, of relationships between fathers and children, of the love and dangers of language, and of a river that runs through it all.
This is a great labor novel, as good as any I have read. Given the current revival of pro-union sentiments, from Starbucks to Amazon to General Motors, I hope it will be widely read.
“In the tradition of Upton Sinclair and Jack London, Michael Dunn gives us a gritty portrait of working-class life and activism during one of the most violent eras in U.S. labor history. Anywhere but Schuylkill is a social novel built out of passion and the textures of historical research. It is both a tale of 1870s labor unrest and a tale for the inequalities and injustices of the twenty-first century.”
—Russ Castronovo, author of Beautiful Democracy and Propaganda 1776.

An instant international bestseller: a suspenseful, sweeping historical epic for readers of Natalie Haynes and Madeline Miller, which boldly reimagines the origin story of the woman who inspired one of Shakespeare’s most iconic characters, Lady Macbeth.
I've paused #ElConde as I've decided it's too heady for my tired body, but damn am I engrossed in this #Pinochet as a vampire conceit. I even had some wine. Turns out, it's a family dramedy about the rich. I'm at the point where the Nun/accountant looks at the books. Might put on the new #MikeFlanagan before my slumber. #TV#movies#Netflix#villains#HistoricalFiction#history#eattherich before they eat you. :ablobcatneon: #spooktober
Written with kaleidoscopic verve and delirious wit, Brooklyn Crime Novel is a breathtaking tour de force by a writer at the top of his powers. Jonathan Lethem, “one of America’s greatest storytellers” (Washington Post), has crafted an epic interrogation of how we fashion stories to contain the uncontainable: our remorse at the world we’ve made.
One thing the "Empires of Bronze" series does really well is not glorify war. The gruesome, awful details are laid out to make it clear that war is not something noble. It also does a great job of humanizing both the Hittite and the Egyptian sides as being motivated by things we could conceivably agree with (namely, avenging a close one's death).
