@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic anyone else do this? i have trouble identifying my own emotions and pain, like where the pain is (one space or joint vs limb or whole body pain) or what enotion specifically i'm feeling besides positive/negative (and sometimes not even that). but when i smoke cannabis, i have a far easier time pinpointing this kinda stuff. none of my autistic friends smoke, so i can't really ask them 😅

roknrol,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@ergifruit @actuallyautistic Depending on how much pain I'm in and where, yes, sometimes this happens to me. It's like when I ask myself the question, "What hurts?" my brain gives me a list. And it will keep listing things until it runs out of things that hurt. It has not, surprisingly, gotten any easier as I've gotten older.

roknrol,

@ergifruit @actuallyautistic Smoking pot helps me with the other overwhelming thoughts, although not specifically with the pain related ones. The weed does help numb the pain a bit, so it's difficult to tell what is causal and effectal.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Brian Setzer (or the Stray Cats, if you must). Love the music and he seems to be one of the few genuinely decent ones out there.

I also adore the Guthries (Arlo and Woody). Willie, of course. The way that Tom Waits has avoided selling out is astounding.

Because I'd forgotten: If you're using Linux and PulseAudio, you can use your laptop to pipe "outside" sounds through your headphones while you're listening to music, and control the volume of it to reduce stimuli while not shutting it all out.

Literally doing that right now in the ER waiting room, and it's saving my sanity.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I don't care for disappointment. I find that a combination of setting my expectations low and by controlling the minutiae as much as possible, I can simultaneously stress myself out and ALWAYS be disappointed, regardless of how good the outcome actually is.

And then I bitch, usually a lot, until everyone that frequently comes into contact with me stops doing so.

I remember a weird polemic I got into at kindergarten. This is late eighties.

I was already reading at a... I don't know what level. I never understood what "reading levels" were anyway, I mean, if I can read, I can read, right?

Well... Turns out none of the other kids apparently were able to read, at least not openly, and reading was actively discouraged by the staff there. There was a storybook hour where everyone picked a story book with illustrations and PRETENDED to read.

I found out when the teacher lady noticed I was actually reading the thing and pulled it away from me, telling me I wasn't supposed to actually read the book with, you know, words printed on it. The justification was "if you read now and get good at it, you'll have a terrible time being bored in first grade when all the other kids are still trying to learn."

Lady, I don't think you understand how reading works. I can't UNLEARN how to read once I learned it.

This is still within my top five unfathomable school experiences.

@CynAq @actuallyautistic I remember it must have been around the sixth grade we were given a vocab list to learn how to spell and define certain words. One of the words was "sarcasm", which I still barely understand most of the time.

Every time I would try to turn it in my teacher would very sarcastically tell me that it was wrong...and I'd do it again. I did it probably a dozen times before stopping. It was decades before I realized that she was trying to teach me sarcasm, not spelling.

A strange part of being autistic is getting in trouble for your facial expressions, tone of voice, not inferring things you haven’t been told, & somehow implying things you haven’t implied. It can feel like people get offended by stuff that’s unavoidable & beyond our control.

You're basically getting in trouble for what others are reading in between the lines because they're making assumptions that are only valid for the people they're used to dealing with.

@actuallyautistic

roknrol,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic You're basically describing the entirety of my marriage. Since we met, my wife was certain that I was a cheater and would cheat (I've never cheated). When I get angry and yell, she thinks I'm going to hit her (I've never thrown a punch). I represent every villain in every movie to her, but I'll be damned if I know what I did to earn such a distinction.

My expressions at this point can best be described as "flat". I don't share them anymore.

roknrol,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@demimom @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic The whole, "You said ____ but you MEANT _____" can take a flying leap. If I didn't say it, I didn't mean it. I have words for a reason. I use them - often more than most people can stomach. Don't tell me what I "meant".

roknrol,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@calofost @demimom @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic Honestly, I've stopped guessing what goes on inside other people's heads. It generally doesn't take them very long to decide that my literalism is either tolerable or annoying...they can make their own decisions with that information.

@Susan60 @marytzu @Thumptastic @anarchautist @nddev @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic To be clear, I do not blame my wife for her attitudes; they're rooted in historical fact, for her. But it is very disheartening to hear the same complaints after 24+ years of not exhibiting a single one of them. It's old. It's tiring.

It may not be 'fair' that these are some (of many more) reasons why I'm leaving her, but I'd be lying if I said they weren't some of my reasons.

  • Only speaking when you’ve knowledge or valuable insights.

  • Answering “how are you?” honestly.

  • Proofreading texts/emails/etc 10+ times before sending.

  • Clumsy phraseology (e.g saying “present opening” instead of present opening” instead of “opening presents”).

I have been told that because I think that I might be autistic, I probably am,

Being a Jewish person on the Left who is also part of a traditional Jewish community this week reminds me of much of my life as an person.

I’m trying to make myself clear, that I value all life. All lives are divine and valuable. It doesn’t excuse people for their violent behavior. It doesn’t excuse us to wish the other to be obliterated.

I’m screaming. Begging. Pleading. Crying.

From my comrades on the Left I beg you to see that Jewish people are being attacked all over the world now. We are scared to go outside. Not only in Israel. See our humanity.

From my Jewish brothers & sisters I beg that we can see the humanity of the Palestinian people and the desires of so many around the world for their wellbeing and freedom from oppression.

No one hears. No one wants to listen. Me and others like me are doubted. Gaslit. People tell us we are exaggerating. That we are wrong. That it’s all fake.

As an autistic person, I would feel uncomfortable judging anyone for their facial expressions. There are many reasons why I dont. I know what it’s like to be truly unable to control your facial expressions, and receive criticism from others for looking smug, angry and/or looking miserable, when infact you’re not.

@actuallyautistic

roknrol,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@Jobob @clouddweller @actuallyautistic @AutisticAdam My wife told me that it's because I don't blink very often.

All I know for certain is that whenever she compares me to the character in a movie, it's a villain. The closest she came to declaring me a hero was Snape.

I've also gotten the "condescending" thing...like, a lot, but I've learned to couch my criticisms in "we both do this" and similar "blow softeners" or, you know, just keep my mouth shut (which gets easier the more I do it).

The facial expression thing is different for me...I tend to have a pretty flat expression most of the time. If you get a smile, you've surprised me. A frown and I'm trying to give you a hint. None of it is very accidental. On the other hand, I don't really judge people for their facial expressions because I don't like looking at people's faces and I tend to avert my gaze...I'm usually not paying attention to their faces. Their hands will often speak volumes though.

One of the nuances that "responsible drinking" campaigns often miss is the reason why Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people drink.

Autistic people don't necessarily drink with the goal of inebriation. Often, we drink to cope with the social environment. It acts as a social lubricant that makes it easier to talk and cope with the sensory bombardment that often happens in spaces where drinking is happening.
