ccunning,

Haha - thanks! I’m typically a function over form type, but I fell in love with the colors of the Moccamaster brewers so I just leaned into it.

Here’s a wide shot of my (ever transforming) setup. It’s the happiest I’ve been with it in both form and function

ccunning,

What can I say? My love of coffee exceeds my body’s capacity to process caffeine.

Before we were old enough to drink my friends and I would sit in the local diner shooting the shit and drinking free refills of coffee until the sun started coming up before we would go home and immediately crash.

Can’t do that anymore. One of the first ways my body started failing me as I’ve gotten older…

ccunning,

Yeah - I rotated the output arm on the Automatic brewer 180° so it brewed over the pour over instead of over its own brew basket. The design of this particular brewer totally accommodates it but I don’t think it was intentional…I’ve never seen it done before anyway.

ccunning,

To me, not particularly, but one thing I’ve learned after trying tons of brewing setups is, I don’t really have that refined of a palate…

ccunning,

You can also transfer your funds from you company’s shit provider to your own HSA account.

ccunning,

I say as little as possible and hope no one notices 😶

ccunning,

I’m pretty sure no one’s ever gotten dysentery or cholera from chocolate flavored poop either.

Correct me if I’m wrong…

ccunning,

The PS2 (and AT) connectors keyboards and mice were largely using before USB were round…

Arguably still better though because you could just rotate the plug until it went in instead of flipping it back and forth 5 times to get it to go in. And they also had more reliable indication for orientation.

ccunning,

I meant to add a warning saying I may have bent a few pins that way 😅

Twist gently…

😳

ccunning,

“…also, I’ve forgotten the technique”

ccunning,

“…and My Axe!”

Not an expert with Lemmy, but if it’s like the markdown interpretation on Reddit single line breaks are ignored. You need two to have it render with a line break. Alternatively you can do a numbered list or a bulleted list with single line breaks starting with 1. or *

  1. This
  2. is a
  3. numbered list
  • This
  • is a
  • bulleted list

EDIT: Ok. After playing with it, I think your lists would work if you put a space between the hyphen and first word on the line

ccunning, (edited )

My wife is going to have sooo much fun teasing me for this…

ccunning,

I see a list of “Blocked Instances” way down at the bottom. Is that different than defederated?

ccunning,

It requires titanium to function properly.

ccunning,

That sounds like the same “Optimized BatteryCharging” option already available on older iPhone models.

ccunning,

Their error was sitting in the blowhole. The trick is you have to go in head first so you can steal the oxygen from the whales lungs.

ccunning,

Not to mention siege warfare as an option…

ccunning,

I’m just saying you could probably starve them out, but a trebuchet could be fun too. I won’t report you…

ccunning,

I’ve never heard of chicken fat mushrooms before.

In Thai chanterelles are called เห็ดมันปู “Het man bpuu” which translates to Crab Fat Mushrooms…

I'm about to buy my first grinder, can anyone help me streamline my morning?

I’m going to have a small French press for my coffee, as I’ve spent a little more than I wanted to on my first hand grinder so I’ll be saving my pennies for a good while. What’s your preferred ratio of water to coffee when making a French press? What’s your technique for brewing? I prefer a light roast, if that matters...

ccunning,

A point of confusion for me has always been is that 60g of beans for 1000ml of water or 60g of beans for 1000ml of desired coffee since some of the water gets trapped with the ground beans?

ccunning,

Last I checked, even Reddit allows signups without an email address…

ccunning,

I only ever used old.reddit.com. Didn’t realize that option was limited to to the old interface

ccunning,

Storage costs are definitely going down.

ccunning,

I love the iPhone 15 color options. I just wish the Pro had the self confidence for bolder color options.

Doesn’t really matter since I’m not buying this year, though.

ccunning,

Oh my god. My USB-C connected external drives can barely keep connected. It’s infuriating waking my Mac up to dozens and dozens of “improperly ejected” messages.

ccunning,

I don’t know but if someone told me they listened to Joe Rogan, I would assume, the best case scenario is they are Libertarian. Worst case is Qanon nut job.

If I live in Mississippi, and I want to drive a boat to Mexico, and back. What is the proper procedure for that?

Like can I just jump in my boat and go? Do I have to alert any authority about my trip? What are the chances the coast guard boards my boat to search it? How do you find a marina in Mexico? Do I have to alert the Mexican government of my trip? I assume I need a passport....

ccunning,

I’m not an expert whatsoever but I have done a fair bit of international travel and resided overseas for multiple years.

That experience has lead me to believe that unlike many countries the US government doesn’t care to track you leaving the country. They may know incidentally due to other processes such as airport/airplane security checks but those are performed by TSA; not the CBP. Both agencies fall under DHS but perform distinct functions.

When leaving the US by air you will go through security checks, but when arriving you come through customs and immigration.

All that is to say I think when traveling by private boat your main concern will be with entry into Mexico; not departing from the US.

I had long ago fantasized about traveling the world by sailboat and often wondered how immigration via seaport would work but never pursued an answer. Your question motivated me to do so.

This is what I found regarding entering Mexico via seaport from a private boat:

STEP 1: Submit passport of captain and vessel documentation along with $332 fee

STEP 2: Complete form with documentation of passengers and crew

STEP 3: Submit completed form from STEP 2 along with receipt from STEP 1

STEP 4: Await confirmation of approval from STEP 3 and receive entry authorization.

STEP 5: There is no step 5! Enjoy a margarita or paloma on the beach!

ccunning,

I worry Lemmy is developing the same earnestness problem Mastodon has…

ccunning,

Gatorade Lemon Ice.

Pretty sure they don’t make it anymore. Unless it was discontinued and then recontinued.

I last bought it ~25 years ago…

ccunning,

This is great info. I’m basically in OPs same situation and I do have a water softener. I will be checking this out tomorrow for sure…

Thanks 🙏

What does your cash flow process look like?

I’m talking about types of accounts, automatic transfers, etc. Feel free to mention specifics, but I’m more interested in higher level information like does your paycheck go to savings or checking, do you use automatic transfers, do you use a traditional bank account or something different, etc....

ccunning,

Without getting too into the weeds with retirement accounts and such, my paycheck gets split and direct deposited into three accounts:

  1. Bills. This is based on any regular recurring payments that were made last year including insurance, utilities, car payments, housing payments, property tax, services, etc. I add all that up for last year, add 10% padding and divide it by my 24 bimonthly pay periods.
  2. Living expenses. I don’t have a finely detailed budget. I’m a responsible spender so I can trust myself. This is irregular spending. Gas, groceries, clothing, household goods, car/ house repairs and improvements and general discretionary spending.
  3. Emergency fund. Everything else gets put into replenishing the emergency fund. If the emergency fund is fully funded I will manually make a payment towards my mortgage principal (or somtimes buy myself a new toy 😬)
ccunning,

they won’t stop showing me content I didn’t sub.

Maybe because I only used Apollo and occasionally old.reddit.com but I never experienced that, thank goodness.

That would drive me nuts…

ccunning,

the official app once 3PAs were killed

shudders

ccunning,

As a long time NoVA native I agree sweet tea isn’t uncommon but also not assumed. I think you’d get the same puzzled reaction if you ordered “tea” as if you ordered “soda”.

ccunning,

In Thailand it’s 100% Line.

Sales people for both buying a house and a car wanted to exchange Line info. They were baffled both that I didn’t have line and that I would want to exchange phone numbers.

ccunning,

Schwab’s Investor checking is a god send if you’re traveling to a country that deals largely in cash transactions.

The refund any and all transaction and conversion fees for ATM withdraws which can be egregious for visitors to some countries.

That way you don’t have to carry around gobs of cash your whole trip…

ccunning,

Lightweight long sleeve UPF rated sun shirt or hoodie…

ccunning,

Most recently Callsheet for iOS. Basically IMDB but without the awful user experience.

Biggest downside is the TMDB which backs it doesn’t seem as fully populated.

ccunning,

I had tried that before but when I search for the community from the drop-down there is no indication that a search would be limited to the coffee community. It immediately reverts back to “All”

If I ignore that and search for grinder anyway it does seem to (mostly) be limited to the coffee community.

This helps a lot - thanks!

ccunning,

10 years next February.

I’m not completely out but I haven’t posted or commented since July 1st

¯_(ツ)_/¯

ccunning,

For me what made Reddit great was not the big wildly popular communities. It was the small niche communities that were (IMHO) only able to form in their shadow and you need a critical mass of people before you can have that.

ccunning,

No, that’s just on the internet…

ccunning,

I just tried it on another computer and it worked just fine.

Obviously its some issue with the first computer…

ccunning,

That didn’t change anything ;still seeing the issue, but it only seems to be on one particular computer. It worked fine on another…
