What can I say? My love of coffee exceeds my body’s capacity to process caffeine.
Before we were old enough to drink my friends and I would sit in the local diner shooting the shit and drinking free refills of coffee until the sun started coming up before we would go home and immediately crash.
Can’t do that anymore. One of the first ways my body started failing me as I’ve gotten older…
Yeah - I rotated the output arm on the Automatic brewer 180° so it brewed over the pour over instead of over its own brew basket. The design of this particular brewer totally accommodates it but I don’t think it was intentional…I’ve never seen it done before anyway.
These US healthcare systems are effectively scams. Yes in theory they can save you money, however in theory there is no difference between theory and practice, while in practice there is.
If one was indistinguishable from the other: taste, scent, texture, temperature, etc. You can’t tell apart the real thing from your choice, but you know 100% what you are eating....
The PS2 (and AT) connectors keyboards and mice were largely using before USB were round…
Arguably still better though because you could just rotate the plug until it went in instead of flipping it back and forth 5 times to get it to go in. And they also had more reliable indication for orientation.
Some people want to be able to watch a movie “for the first time” all over again. Others want to forget a rubbish one. If you could remove just one movie from your memory, which would it be?
I’m curious what people here listen to, and I’m also looking for new ones to check out. I’m personally a big fan of Linux Unplugged, MBMBaM, Lateral, and Twenty Thousand Hertz!...
Not an expert with Lemmy, but if it’s like the markdown interpretation on Reddit single line breaks are ignored. You need two to have it render with a line break. Alternatively you can do a numbered list or a bulleted list with single line breaks starting with 1. or *
This
is a
numbered list
This
is a
bulleted list
EDIT: Ok. After playing with it, I think your lists would work if you put a space between the hyphen and first word on the line

I’m going to have a small French press for my coffee, as I’ve spent a little more than I wanted to on my first hand grinder so I’ll be saving my pennies for a good while. What’s your preferred ratio of water to coffee when making a French press? What’s your technique for brewing? I prefer a light roast, if that matters...
A point of confusion for me has always been is that 60g of beans for 1000ml of water or 60g of beans for 1000ml of desired coffee since some of the water gets trapped with the ground beans?
Oh my god. My USB-C connected external drives can barely keep connected. It’s infuriating waking my Mac up to dozens and dozens of “improperly ejected” messages.
I know of someone who says they listen to Joe Rogan podcasts (political I assume) but I don’t know what this means or what the connotations are. Both this person and I live in east asia.
I don’t know but if someone told me they listened to Joe Rogan, I would assume, the best case scenario is they are Libertarian. Worst case is Qanon nut job.
Like can I just jump in my boat and go? Do I have to alert any authority about my trip? What are the chances the coast guard boards my boat to search it? How do you find a marina in Mexico? Do I have to alert the Mexican government of my trip? I assume I need a passport....
I’m not an expert whatsoever but I have done a fair bit of international travel and resided overseas for multiple years.
That experience has lead me to believe that unlike many countries the US government doesn’t care to track you leaving the country. They may know incidentally due to other processes such as airport/airplane security checks but those are performed by TSA; not the CBP. Both agencies fall under DHS but perform distinct functions.
When leaving the US by air you will go through security checks, but when arriving you come through customs and immigration.
All that is to say I think when traveling by private boat your main concern will be with entry into Mexico; not departing from the US.
I had long ago fantasized about traveling the world by sailboat and often wondered how immigration via seaport would work but never pursued an answer. Your question motivated me to do so.
This is what I found regarding entering Mexico via seaport from a private boat:
STEP 1: Submit passport of captain and vessel documentation along with $332 fee
STEP 2: Complete form with documentation of passengers and crew
STEP 3: Submit completed form from STEP 2 along with receipt from STEP 1
STEP 4: Await confirmation of approval from STEP 3 and receive entry authorization.
STEP 5: There is no step 5! Enjoy a margarita or paloma on the beach!

I’m talking about types of accounts, automatic transfers, etc. Feel free to mention specifics, but I’m more interested in higher level information like does your paycheck go to savings or checking, do you use automatic transfers, do you use a traditional bank account or something different, etc....
Without getting too into the weeds with retirement accounts and such, my paycheck gets split and direct deposited into three accounts:
Bills. This is based on any regular recurring payments that were made last year including insurance, utilities, car payments, housing payments, property tax, services, etc. I add all that up for last year, add 10% padding and divide it by my 24 bimonthly pay periods.
Living expenses. I don’t have a finely detailed budget. I’m a responsible spender so I can trust myself. This is irregular spending. Gas, groceries, clothing, household goods, car/ house repairs and improvements and general discretionary spending.
Emergency fund. Everything else gets put into replenishing the emergency fund. If the emergency fund is fully funded I will manually make a payment towards my mortgage principal (or somtimes buy myself a new toy 😬)

Lets say I’m researching buying a coffee grinder. I would like to search !coffee for past discussions on the topic before starting a new post. Same goes for this community and asking this question. Has it been asked before?...
I had tried that before but when I search for the community from the drop-down there is no indication that a search would be limited to the coffee community. It immediately reverts back to “All”
If I ignore that and search for grinder anyway it does seem to (mostly) be limited to the coffee community.
For me what made Reddit great was not the big wildly popular communities. It was the small niche communities that were (IMHO) only able to form in their shadow and you need a critical mass of people before you can have that.
