youngalfred,

I like shorts! They’re comfy and easy to wear!

youngalfred, (edited )

Emma started in 2013, and left in 2021.

She was married to the purple wiggle (Lachlan) for 2 years - not quite a single episode.

youngalfred,

Nah apparently they are on good terms, it just wasn’t meant to be.

She left to have a solo career as ‘Emma Memma’. When she was with the Wiggles she had a solo show as Emma wiggle that little girls loved.

youngalfred,

Typo in article:

If you are however willing to except the possibility that you are wrong.

Except should be ‘accept’.

Not trying to be annoying, but I know people will often find that as a reason to disregard academic arguments.

youngalfred,

But Jif in Australia is a cleaning solution - can we have different pronunciations based on country?

youngalfred,

Speed 3, the moped that couldn’t slow down.
Setting: Bangkok.
Starring Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper.
Villain is Ken Jeong.

How did living in caves not backfire on cavemen?

I have a lot of indirect experience/knowledge with caves. I don’t have to be one of the people who directly explored one to know one of the first things one learns about caves is how ill-suited for wandering around they are. Slopes can change on a dime, it’s incredibly rocky inside, and they fill with whatever falls from the...

youngalfred,

That makes sense - never considered cave artifacts to be an example of survivorship bias before

youngalfred,

Titanfall 2 is an amazing game. It’s single player is one of the best - it never gets stale as there’s always a new mechanic, both as a ‘pilot’ (soldier) or in a titan, to master or a twist you didn’t see coming. The story itself is top notch, and it’s length is good.

If I remember right, you can pause at anytime, even in cutscenes. They’re not long though.

Plus, the multiplayer has been fixed just recently so you can vs others in some of the best feeling combat any game has to offer.

I’ve never played the others though, so feel free to go with them.

youngalfred,

Yes! Respawn actually released a patch the other week and there’s 1000s playing again.

youngalfred,

I think the difference is that Apple products can be repaired, as parts are plentiful for third party repairers and apple will also repair it (for a premium).

The article is saying how no-one, not even Google, can repair a pixel watch as there were no spare parts produced.

Edit: I understand their repair policies re MacBook repair shops etc, but for a consumer being told that even the manufacturer can’t do anything is a bit galling and cause for reflection on future purchases.

youngalfred,

But the point of the article is that the watch literally can’t be repaired - no first or third party can do it.

But I can get any apple watch repaired. Yes they are scummy about third party, but apple will gladly repair it for money.

I can understand the shift.

youngalfred,

Ok I know everyone has said about Firefox + ublock which is a great option, but another option is Edge. It’s built in adblocker is surprisingly effective.

Really, you need some form of adblocker to make the web usable again.

youngalfred,

So I’m expected to drop off a car with a full tank after hiring, and I expect it to be full when I pick it up.

Is that not the same for EV’s when you hire?

youngalfred,

You should read this page: github.com/…/Installation-and-Setup

It’s very detailed about what to do to get stuff working (on lots of distros), and what currently isn’t working (see camera support etc)

I took a look in the past but deemed it too much of a compromise at the time for what wasn’t working.

youngalfred,

“loopholes”, “wage theft” - why are all these terms in quotation marks, like they aren’t a real thing?

“Restrict the viability of ride share and food delivery services” - is that because they aren’t viable unless they are deliberately underpaying?

Notice how there are two opposing views posted, yet the only proponent presented is the government.

youngalfred,

Wow sounded interesting so I checked in steam - the new one needs minimum 12GB ram???!

youngalfred,

The only thing I’ve found that Firefox didn’t work right with is certain SharePoint features, which unfortunately is a show stopper for me.

Could you compress text files by mapping a word to how commonly it is used and translating it with an application?

It’s a bit of a weird shower thought but basically I was wondering hypothetical if it would be possible to take data from a social media site like Reddit and map the most commonly used words starting at 1 and use a separate application to translate it back and forth....

youngalfred,

That’s pretty much what a tokenizer does for Large Language Models like Chat-GPT. You can see how it works here: platform.openai.com/tokenizer

Type in the word ‘Antidisestablishmentarianism’ and you can see it becomes 5 tokens instead of 28 characters.

youngalfred,

Well and the fact that smokers will rely more heavily on the free health system - it’s in the government’s interest to prevent people smoking to save money.

youngalfred,

I wonder if having a more exposed ‘open’ port without the tongue would lead to more damaging debris getting lodged inside.

I shave a toothpick down to be half the width at the tip and use it to clean out lint etc

youngalfred,

‘of all time’ - hmmm the earliest item on the list is the newton from the 90s, but then everything else is firmly in the last 20 years.

youngalfred,

The Hunt for Red October

youngalfred,

Just finished it. I’d heard about it, and many people recommend it when red October is mentioned (and vice versa). I’m not sure I’d put them in the same genre.

I’m not sure what I think at the moment. It was very long, but had some very intense scenes. I think it was trying to get me to feel deeply for the characters (especially the captain) but it didn’t really reach me (spoiler) Eg The people jumping off the burning ship.

I’m also not sure yet what to think about the fact that (spoiler) the whole movie takes place on the submarine, with no cut aways. I think on one hand it added to the tension of surface ships trying to find them, but on the other hand it was difficult to orient the story without visuals for location or relative locations.

I feel the length was included to show how boring it can be waiting for orders or enemies, but a shorter cut might’ve been more engaging.

It’s not a movie I’d go and rewatch in a hurry (if ever). Red October has much more rewatchability.

youngalfred,

I think it depends on the game.

Need something fast paced, where the options don’t really matter? Go with just labels and don’t show the script.

Need fast paced but it matters? Go with the other commenter’s game that has a time limit while still showing scripts.

Slow and doesn’t matter? Do what you like, it doesn’t matter.

Slow and matters? Think Fallout: New Vegas - excellent script detail and what you choose makes a big difference

youngalfred,

Niche case- I’m a maths teacher and it’s been good for replying to emails from students with problems.

youngalfred,

It wasn’t so much to not steal the interface, it was to not steal the whole unit from the car.

If the front was left attached, a thief would break in and steal the whole radio.

With the front off, it’s basically useless to steal the in car part.

youngalfred,

I always thought it was a bit harder in Australia, given that the language changes so much across such small distances.
