Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

Title. “lmao internet points” and all, but what is the point of participating in a community that sees assumptions and other commonly non-harmful commentaries/posts as “bad” this easily? Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like...

“Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like internet points?”

But… is that not exactly the description of somebody who complains about downvotes?? As said by others; they should be considered exactly as valid as upvotes. If you feel like they prohibit you from voicing an opinion, I personally feel like that is a you-problem. Ask yourself of the content you posted is crap, if you feel it is not, simply ignore the downvotes and move on, they are just pixels.

Edit: I checked your posts, most downvoted ones seem to be clickbaity or images that you posted to the linux community. This is not something that vibes with that type of community, I would have downvoted that too. The ones on your technical questions seem unjustified however. Posting a code snippet asking people to execute it… I think that crap should even have been deleted by mods.

x3i,

By that logic, upvoting posts is equally as “repressive” as downvoting as it decreases the relative visibility of all other comments, I hope that angle shows the stupidity of that argument. I think we have a fundamental difference in understanding censorship, freedom of speech and intolerance here. If you want to play the self-victimization game, please do so on Reddit and not in the linux community on this platform.

x3i,

Always reminds me of the console wars… people attach their whole identity to all kinds of things nowadays and fight for it like it was a religion. Did not see much good come out of such threads yet.

x3i,

Let me raise a side concern here since the core questions already seems to be answered; reconsider the Nvidia GPUs. Depending on what you do, you might encounter significant shortcomings at the moment since they do not play perfectly with Wayland yet (which is clearly the future). So do some research in this direction first before you pull the trigger.

x3i,

Would love to know if this is better at Tidal than at Spotify. After all, that is the main reason I switched.

x3i,

I say this time and time again; only listen to people regarding their field of authority. For anything outside the world of software, Stallman’s opinions should not be seen any more valid or important than any other person on the internet. We should stick to that more. (What happened/happens due to his position in the FSF is a different topic)

x3i,

You can run lineageOS on it though; problem solved

x3i,

This article is from July 2021. Why exactly are you sharing this?

x3i,

Okay, fair point, so it is relevant for a current issue

x3i,

This is one of the reasons why I am very unsure about the whole archinstall thing. On the one hand, it lowers the barrier of entry for less techy people, which is always good. On the other hand, it allows for installing the OS without ever having to use the archwiki, which leads to people making a blog post like this that could be solved by looking for “bluetooth” in the archwiki and following the instructions. To somebody not familiar with the OS, this makes it seem like arch is much more complicated than it actually is. “To run arch, you have to hope that there is a blog post or youtube video for simple things like bluetooth!”

No, you simply go here: wiki.archlinux.org(Also very useful resource if you are on any other distro btw)

x3i,

Still waiting for lightning network and splits to become a thing for donations, I feel like that would be a great solution for this

Linux on a 2in1 for Uni (lemmy.world)

Hello linix@lemmy, I got fixed on the idea of replacing my iPad with a 2in1 like the thibkpad X13 for uni since I use the keyboard with my iPad a lot. The only time I need to take handwritten notes is in chemistry, mathematics and to annotate PDFs. Does anyone here have experience with convertibles running Linux? What would be...

x3i,

Running an HP Elite x360 1030 G2 since 2018 and an Elite Dragonfly since last year, both on Arch linux and Sway (recently Hyprland) with full touch and pen support. Can recommend both!

x3i,

Sorry, saw the reply just now. I use Wayland pretty much exclusively since I switched all my devices to Linix roughly three years ago and I face no issues. Afaik sway is fully compatible with i3 config, so I assume your gestures should just work the same. Hyprland is a different beast, it is still pre-release, so while the state is impressive, do not expect super advanced niche features like gestures (check their wiki to see if they are supported). I don’t use an OSK, whenever I fold, I pretty much use only xournal++ which I navigate with pen and touch. However, there is at least one that I tinkered with some months ago and it worked, I cannot remember the name though (probably got it from the arch wiki). Lid switch detection works well in sway, so I assume configuration for it to come up automatically should be trivial. Again, definitely try sway first, this should give you the best experience. Hope it helps!

x3i,

So you are tryimg to tell me that the operating costs of the CDN are the big reason they need money, not the fact they throw billions at crappy content productions? And that the little performance you would gain by stripping k8s would make a difference, especially wrt the huge additional administration effort and lack of automation this would introduce? Nah man, sorry but you are wrong here in many ways.

  • x3i,

I’m getting a bit of weird vibes from Mozilla lately… I like what they do but I’m unsure about how I feel regarding the upcoming rebranding of fennec to firefox mobile and now this. Are they just swallowing other projects now? Strange change in strategy, hopefully no disadvantages for us.

    x3i,

In line with my experience, tried it to plan a route around northern France this summer and it got stuck a couple of times. Essentially, it tried to route me back to a position earlier in the route and would not recalculate, resulting in me going in a circle twice. Especially annoying if you are on the motorbike and cannot just restart the navigation mid-ride. Switched to the openstreetmap app, their navigation never did such a thing to me. Very weird since the projects seem to be somehow related

    x3i,

Thank you, I will look into that, any recommendations about the client or is there only a single one?

    x3i,

I already have a Jellyfin server, won’t switch to plex but maybe I find a comoatible client for that one, thanks for the pointer!

How Ubuntu Linux snuck into high-end Dell laptops (and why it's called 'Project Sputnik') (www.zdnet.com)

Today, the Dell XPS-13 with Ubuntu Linux is easily the most well-known Linux laptop. Many users, especially developers – including Linus Torvalds – love it. As Torvalds recently said, “Normally, I wouldn’t name names, but I’m making an exception for the XPS 13 just because I liked it so much that I also ended up buying...

    x3i,

Very true also for the opposite direction; I am daily driving an HP Elite Dragonfly for work and my Elite x360 1030 G2 for private and both work almost flawlessly despite no official Linux support. I have to disclaim that I never tested the Fingerprint reader or IR face recognition crap. But microphone, orientation sensors, webcam, keyboard, trackpad all work extremely well (Arch linux).

It always comes down to the individual hardware it seems.

    x3i,

Your example has little to do with dyslexia though, has it?

    x3i, (edited )

Imo this article is mainly playing semantics. Even if they are right and this is seen as “the beginning” one day, the current LLMs only perform well in very narrow tasks, everywhere else they are sub-par to humans. Unfortunately, that will not stop many companies from using them for shit they cannot handle, just to have this blow into the face of society later. That would be the much more interesting talking point; in which areas can we see companies jumping the gun and what will be the problems and dangers that arise from it?

    x3i,

Tge easiest way is probably to change the port of the Pihole config page

My Message to the free and open source software communtity

we must never forget that privacy and free and open source software go hand and hand and as a community of peaple who love linux and free and open source software we can change the world with our minds and our words just one thing can change the course of history and time and time again its been proven to be true i may be only 1...

I’ll leave some dots and commas here, just in case anyone needs them: ,.,.,.,…,.

Linux can be used at your workplaces (lemmy.ml)

I’m just tired. On the last post about having Linux at our work, many people that seems to be an IT worker said there have been several issues with Linux that was not easy to manipulate or control like they do with Windows, but I think they just are lazy to find out ways to provide this support. Because Google forces all their...

    x3i,

Wtf is “Linux desktop”? There are more than a dozen different mainstream desktop environments and window managers that have different degrees of maturity, stability and complexity so this blank statement is very hard to support. Not even talking about the servers/prtocols behind it. I can certainly not confirm that experience on Sway, Gnome and Hyprland and with how young the latter is, I would actually expect it to break.

So no, from a technical perspective, Linux is absolutely ready as long as you stick to stable distros and configurations.

    Edit: wording

    x3i,

Can you get monitors in 50 inch these days though? Then this would be my route as well once my current dumb TV dies

    x3i,

Ran into this some time ago and learned that there is a more rudimentary command adduser instead but it does not do things like home folder creation

Microsoft to Drop Support for Third-Party Printer Drivers on Windows (petri.com)

“With the release of Windows 10 21H2, Windows offers inbox support for Mopria compliant printer devices over network and USB interfaces via the Microsoft IPP Class Driver. This removes the need for print device manufacturers to provide their own installers, drivers, utilities, and so on. Device experience customization is now...

    x3i,

Well, the “distributed and automatically installed” part seems more like Windows users will automatically get that bloatware installed; no way to get a minimal driver without bullshit utilities anymore, right? I assume that utility will be written by the device manufacturer…

"The owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, said the ADL was trying to shut down his company by 'falsely accusing it and me of being antisemitic'."

    x3i,

While I see where you are coming from, I don’t think this is a pattern of thinking that applies only (or primarily) to right wingers but rather to political radicals of all sorts. We see similar bullshit coming from the far left with “all straight white males are oppressors” and similar statements. Might also be a result of social media echo chambers, who knows…

    x3i,

It is a very nice client, I used it for nine months but had to drop it once my boss decided to use Matrix for calls as well. Unfortunately, gomuks does not even signal calls, so I wouldn’t be able to just switch to a different client and join the call from there. Besides that, this client is really great!

    x3i,

Business devices from HP (Eliebook). Having mine since 2018, runs like a charm

    x3i,

Main reasons I see being raised a lot are Canonical’s absolute control over the snap ecosystem and the dependency problem inside the snaps, meaning they often ship outdated versions of dependencies which might have known bugs or flaws.

The fact that it is forced on users is mentioned by other people here already. Afaik this is not a thing yet on Ubuntu server, so maybe install that one + the GUI packages? Not an Ubuntu user myself, so this could be oversimplified.

    x3i,

The problem is usually in the broadness of the definition. Less democratic regimes can easily use this to forbid material about opposing views and parties. Double-edged sword.

Still trying to figure out this Lemmy ordeal. lots of overlapping and not enough specific groups, so I feel this should belong here (lemmy.world)

So I’m struggling to understand all the different types of usb standards like 2.0, 3.1, 3.2, 4.0, etc. I am interested in only USB c to USB c. I’ve read about higher data transfer speeds? I’m confused by what that actually means. Is that like transferring files from your laptop to an external drive? Basically sending files...

    x3i,

You are totally right to be confused, the USB naming is a total mess. A quick Google search told me that your two ports are Thunderbolt4, another thing to mix in. TB4 to my knowledge integrates USB4, so you can basically connect anything that is USB2,3,4 or Thunderbolt3 or 4. Luckily, none if that matters for your use case, pretty much all proper docking stations support charging (usually the functionality is listed explicitly on the docking station description), so you can probably choose almost any. If you go with one of the big laptop manufacturer’s product (Dell, HP) it is pretty much guaranteed to work. Personally, I use HP’s Thunderbolt 3 dock for my gf and HP’s universal Thunderbolt Dock for myself across my work and private devices. Even works on my android phone!

    x3i,

It is only important when you want to connect displays to the dock, if that is not your use case, any travel dock for 40 bucks will do :)

    x3i,

Just confirming this being a thing; had to battle the same crap recently at work trying to install Ubuntu server onto Dell Optiplex’s… also make sure SATA is set to AHCI and not RAID, as well as the boot options that someone already pointed out in another comment.

    x3i,

Holy fucking shit dude… Sorry for you but in a weird way I’m a bit relieved to see this being the case in the US as well. The village I grew up in (Germany) still has a price of ~50€ for speeds of 50-100MBit/s However, there is at least no data cap in that case. My 1000 Mbit/s contract was capped to 1TB/month as well until four years ago (40€/month). I really hope this improves for all of us soon!

    x3i,

Not a good idea for three reasons:

    • the assumption that this will stop lawsuits is very generous, especially when we consider that there are other countries than the US that have lawyers and IP too
    • putting such an important task in the hands of a government that might be controlled by whatever extremist possible in the future is a bad idea; who controls the past, controls the future and parties could delete parts of the past at their will
    • a less dystopian thought: future governments might simply cut the funding or restrict the archive to US content only because “why shouod they pay for other contries’ history?”

A legislative approach that protects what the archive does would be a much more reasonable approach.

    x3i,

Very fair point, that nails it, thank you!

    x3i,

Except for blockchain as a technology, I agree with you; decentralization and thus democratization of all these things would be best!

    x3i,

Was there some context or discussion about that over there? If I recall correctly, lemmy.world is hosted in Germany, right? The lawyers there are quite extreme when it comes to cracking down on piracy; is a whole business model… So maybe .world is just overly cautious

why are android emulators either nonexistent or utterly useless?

the one thing linux really hasnt been made on par with winblows yet is the dreadful amount of options for android simulation -the most popular choice seems to be Waydroid, but its such an unneeded hassle to set up at all -genymotion is just slow -and than you have things like android x86 which entirely defeat the point of an...

    x3i,

No, qemu can run ARM images with ease. If I recall correctly, waydroid is using that approach

    x3i,

Thanks for the correction, has been a while since I used waydroid :)

Please help make my dream a reality (kbin.social)

I humbly ask your assistance, be it donations and or sharing this. I am working on a Fediverse platform that I believe can add tremendously to this place. Unfortunately, in order to bring this project to life I need funds. Please do not feel obligated, but donate out of the kindess of your heart. I know it is hard out there for...

    x3i,

Okay, I see an emotional story and a set of general statements about how a fediverse platform should be like but I do not see a single sentence regarding what would be different from existing platforms. You have to be specific if you ask tech people for money, this description sounds just… hollow.

From what I see you could just set up your own Lemmy/Kbin/Whatever server, no need for excessive funding upfront. Sorry but sounds sketchy.

    x3i,

That is indeed how it works

Apple TV vs Firestick for pirated movies and series?

(Repost ish, from Technology), So I just bought a new telly and to my surprise, not, the OS is rather bad and has very limited amount of apps. x3i,

Sorry but that is sth that I cannot answer properly; I have a fullHD TV from 2012 connected, so HDR is not sth I can even test… I have not experienced any lags or hickuos so far though, just some general problem with fullscreen on newpipe but that has an open issue on Github for six months already. (And downgrading to an old version solved it for now)

    x3i,

Meaning no torrent downloads are possible? Or “just” no uploads?
