This one seriously annoyed me. And it hasn’t convinced me to switch to YT Music, and instead I just found a (noticeably worse) alternative

It was such a simple and useful app, did exactly everything it needed to and nothing it didn’t. I very much dislike the trend of YouTube “everything”-ing their scattered smaller apps into one big conglomerated app.

Really I’m just still salty about Allo >:(

Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?

The Infinity Blade or Minigore series, for example, or anything made by Illusion Labs. These games are genius and most consoles don’t even have a touch screen or utilise it well like some smartphone games do....

Damn i forgot about boxhead… I must have spent more hours in that game than anything in my Steam library back in the day.

I also had the Alias 2, and then it became my mom’s phone after I moved on to my first smartphone (HTC One M7). Loved that stupid double flipping thing to death, such a great design with the e-paper or w/e for the buttons so they could change for the different perspective / context.

On both, but I haven’t bothered to touch mastodon in a while.

I can appreciate some of the ideas that draw people into Mastoson but for me it’s just super boring though, everyone that I followed on Twitter who moved over is still great to see content from, but the overall vibe of both the instance I’m on and the global federated feed is either just the same stuff for a whole day and a half or infinite small un-curated posts. It doesn’t have that twitter “feel” of stuff I want to see and stuff I might want to see.

Bluesky on the other hand has a lot of user-generated “feeds” that lets me try out some different options, many of which offer exactly what I miss about Twitter. Still no magic algorithms as smart as Twitter’s was / is, but the user-generated stuff does a good job most of the time in showing me content from accounts I follow, accounts that they interact with frequently, and content that is similar to what I follow and interact with. It’s a lot more satisfying and useful to scroll down for a bit than on Mastodon.

Ever considered trying out a tiling window manager?

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

Yeah I also use KDE on my desktop, though I have my laptop running QTile because the tile hotkeys are much more convinient than navigating with the trackpad.

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

Sure, but that’s not the only benefit to having full control over the entire tiling interface. I enjoy building out the features and visuals I want in python. It’s fun to have that level of control.

lol totally fair

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

Right, but the fact of the matter is you can do most things on any distro, it’s very rare that any one distros is “really for” anything specific. They’re not all that different to one another at the end of the day, and to a new user potentially paralyzed by choice this site doesn’t really help either.

Sometimes it’s much easier to say “here’s 3 that offer the most stable new experience, try them out.” And afterwards if you get really tech savvy then go down the niche distro-hopping rabbit hole.

More distros is certainly a good thing, but most new linux users don’t even know what they’re looking for or would even get to the technical depth where the difference between any two distros would actually matter to their daily use. Even more so with the current migration of gamers onto Linux.

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

You are also not indicative an entire category of potential new users. You are also clearly not the majority who I am referring to, no need to take it personally.

@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

A little more nuanced than that, at the bottom of the article it says:

According to a 2014 Gigaom interview with Paul Kane, then chairman of the Internet Computer Bureau, the domain name registry is required to give some of its profits to the British government, for administration of the British Indian Ocean Territory.[23] After being questioned as a result of the interview, the British Government denied receiving any funds from the sale of .io domain names, and argued that consequently, the profits could not be shared with the Chagossians, the former inhabitants forcibly removed by the British government.[24] Kane, however, contradicted the government’s denial.[25][26]

Love my Pixel, love my Pixel Bud Pros, love my Pixel Watch. Would never use Chrome over Firefox, though I use google search & assistant all the time.

I have a gmail, but it’s devolved into a “email i give to sites i know will spam me and sell my data and send me endless marketing crap” pit, and instead have a proton mail that I use for everything personal / important.

I have zero “brand loyalty” towards google though, I only use products of theirs insofar as they are the best in the class / category that I’m looking for. And for now, that happens to be first-party android devices / wearables, but certainly not browsers. Far from a fanboy, but I also don’t subscribe to the weird hate hivemind on here.

I love that even the URL preview shows an IP address lol.

The site just grabs the viewers current IP I imagine it’s probably whatever address is used by the instance to parse the URL and generate the preview, since it’s different if I view it on my instance, vs if I view it on the original post on dbzer0

Just fun to notice I guess.

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

I assume some instance’s don’t have a front-end with URL previewing, but I can see it on my instance’s alternate front-end (Alexandrite), and also on dbzer0’s default layout.

You’re missing the point. Do you think a president with an R next to their name would be any less of a bloodthirsty moron? So now it’s not only “they’re bombing Palestine” but also all the other human rights violating shit that happens under a Republican president here at home.

Yes Biden should stop absolutely supporting the genocide, but threatening to replace him with literally the same plus LGBTQ+ discrimination, immigration fear mongering, more destruction of reproductive rights, etc. is certainly not a sane reaction.

They were already scanning every message and DM for data tracking and whatnot to sell anyway, the only difference now is they’re using it for TOS violations.

Privacy-wise nothing has changed, but actual consequences for actually bad things like racism / transphobia / csam / etc. is good. The only real issue is what if they decide that sharing a music file is piracy and now your account is penalized? What about uploading an NES ROM to a friend via a DM? Or sharing a link to an anime piracy website?

It’s the kind of thing that has to be a balance between making sure users aren’t doing stuff that is strictly against Discord’s rules, but also about making a good-faith attempt to limit things that can get Discord themselves in trouble from companies who are becoming more and more aware that Discord has been used as a piracy-safe haven for quite some time now. (Like how they’re limiting their “using discord upload URLs like your own CDN” issue last month.)

qBittorrent network interface bind not working?

I am using ProtonVPN, and have (or so I thought) set up qBittorrent to bind to the network interface that ProtonVPN is using (tun0). The connection symbol turns red if I turn off the VPN, and downloads will stop. However, when checking the torrent address on ipleak.net, it seems that this bind is not working properly - my real...

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

Are you misreading the webpage?

What you’re describing seems like intended behavior. Other than what someone else here noted about using the proton0 adapter rather than tun0, you should not have to do anything other than bind qBittorrent to your VPN’s adapter to stop leaking any and all IP information to the peer swarm.

When you use ipleak.net, you will see your current IP address at the top. This has nothing to do with qbittorrent. Farther down, you need to add the “Torrent Address detection” magnet link to qBittorrent, then that sectoin of the page will show what IP address is being broadcast by qBittorrent (which should match the IP shown at the top of the page when your VPJN adapter is present and active.)

If you have qBit bound to an adapter that is no longer present, you should see both the Speed chart on qBit drop to zero and the page’s Torrent Address section will stop updating since it will no longer be receiving any new traffic.

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

If that is indeed the case you should report this issue with as much detail as possible to the Proton team, because it seems like qBit is behaving propperly and there’s some portion of Proton virtual adapter that is failing here.

I use Proton Vpn as well, but I have a custom wireguard interface & server switching script via their API that doesn’t run into the same issue you’re describing. So the issue must lie somewhere in the Linux GUI app.

Do you get the same issue if you try using an openvpn or wireguard config generated from logging into the proton vpn website? or maybe just from the CLI version of the app?

why cant Steam Deck detect display resolution?

Every PC I’ve ever used automatically detects and adjusts resolution to the display you connect to it. Even Nintendo Switch will detect when it’s docked and automatically adjust the display resolution. But on Steam Deck you literally have to adjust the display resolution for every game, every time you switch displays....

Then they should just use Endeavour, it’s literally just arch with some nice QOL packages to start.

I’m all for this post, but I feel like someone needs to ask: What features from Youtube am I losing out on by using these alternate front-ends? (instead of just continuing the cat-and-mouse game between uBlock Origin and Google while at leat preserving the same features and UI that we’re already very mu ch comfortable with)

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

I could understand consolidation when you’re as big as google and lot of these one-off apps (Duo, Allo, Podcasts, Measure, Hangouts, etc.) are all clearly just testing grounds for either specific features eventually destined for their mainline apps, or just neat ideas that never caught on and couldn’t be monetized enough to warrant keeping the service alive.

The real issue is: they almost NEVER actually make the “consolidated” app reach feature parity with the one it gets folded into.

Rant about Nvidia related updates on Linux (kbin.social)

There are many reasons to dislike Nvidia on Linux. Here is a little thing that bugs me all the time, the updates. Linux 6.6 To Better Protect Against The Illicit Behavior Of NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver (www.phoronix.com)

Luis Chamberlain sent out the modules changes today for the Linux 6.6 merge window. Or in other words, bits that only true open-source drivers should be utilizing and not...

so the issue gets the attention it deserves.

The other best way to do this is to actually submit the issue in the appropriate location so the Lemmy devs can track and respond to it.

@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

I believe they’ve (Google) been somewhat successful in convincing carriers / 3rd party OS devs like Samsung to start implementing RCS in their own messaging apps. There’s even a 3rd party app on iOS that can use it now.

How Linus publicly responds to these very fairly laid out criticisms will really affect their standing in the tech review space going forward.

Linus generally sucks at taking warranted feedback & criticism, so I can see him crashing and burning super hard in whatever post or podcast comment he makes publicly about this.

This looks like a huge issue as far as moving from a “haha wacky video” tech channel to a “hard data driven testing” tech channel, but also it’s not like they haven’t done “serious” reviews prior to the Labs stuff in the past so I’m not about to hand wave away their issues as “growing pains” or anything like that; it’s just indicative of sloppy workflow and low effort internal culture.

worsedoughnut,
@worsedoughnut@lemdro.id avatar

I mostly watch LTT for the entertainment value but I’ve never taken their reviews particularly seriously.

Except, people spending hundreds to a thousand dollars on PC hardware do clearly trust him and his channel for the final “should you buy this or not” stance at the end of each review. It’s not a negligible amount of influence he has on the tech review space, and it’s explicitly because of their click-bait / algorithm friendly thumbnails and titles that they’re able to reach such wide audiences and become the top few results when someone searches for a product.

it is clear that Linus knows his stuff

Is it? I’ve been watching for years and he always exudes “content creator persona” and very rarely expresses and real technical knowledge. He’s essentially the youtube star version of that one kid who built their PC and never shuts up about it; he has certainly educated himself on consumer tech stats and comparisons, but his background and especially his current work have very little to do with actual technical know how.

And I’m not even saying that’s a “bad thing”, since he has writers and staff and now the Lab who should be able to reach that level of understanding and let him be just the face on the screen. But the fact is like Steve has said, that clearly also isn’t what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
