Microsoft has shortened its $1 Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass trials to just 14 days instead of a month, just weeks before the release of Starfield. After running for years, the $1 trial for new Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers stopped in March before returning last month after Microsoft adjusted its Xbox…
@asteroidrainfall I think it's only fair to have a 14 days trial for 1 Euros/Dollars. One month trial period was insane anyway. And just to correct the article or add information; this trial is not only for new subscribers in general, but also if you haven't used it in a months. Then you get the offer again. I did that multiple times (it offers me again for 1 Euro), because most of the time I do not have Game Pass subscription.
YouTube is changing the homepage experience for users who have their watch history turned off. They will now see an almost blank homepage with just a search bar and buttons for Shorts, Subscriptions and Library. This is intended to make it clear that personalized recommendations rely on watch history data. The new design aims to...
@trashhalo I have the watch history disabled for years now. And the results for the home feed recommendations was more or less of content from the subscriptions I had, with a sprinkle of other content when scrolling down. Wasn't too bad, at least better than what can be seen when logged off. But overall I don't care if the home feed recommendations get disabled for me. Not worth trading off the watch history to Google. It's fine for me.
There is still recommendation on the video itself, for related content. Also you can discover other channels by searching or with third party sites sites (where it gets shared). There is plenty of opportunities to discover new content. I personally rely and use mostly the Subscriptions feed view with my 137 subscriptions.
@peter I'm not actually sure if this is a privacy win at all. I use Google for years with disabled history (and other stuff disabled) and this new change does not make any difference to my privacy. At the moment, still, the home feed recommendations is mostly about videos from my subscriptions, past videos and the newest one. All it does is take away that view, which does not improve privacy. What actually improves privacy is to disable the history, which you could do since years.
@thehatfox I was so confused. So this is not "Thread" by "Meta"? I first thought the article was written by an AI and "Matter" was meant to be "Meta". But this has nothing to do with it, lol.
@SubArcticTundra Also add XBox game controllers to the list. I have multiple pair of rechargeable batteries. It's way better than having integrated batteries like in the PS controllers. I can just swap the set out for a full set, right away. Doing this since Xbox 360.
@abhibeckert I have those from Eneloop. They do not discharge that fast as the old generation of rechargeable batteries. Yes they do, but the rate is quiet slow.

The Hacker News and reddit.com/r/vim take on NeoVim is frequently that NeoVim has done tremendous harm to the overall Vim community and that the NeoVim developers aren’t respectful to Beam. The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. For me its honestly a ton of my work software (digital forensics), shit is too niche to be replaced by good FOSS options. Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom, etc. Autopsy is great and free and has a linux version but it simply cannot get the same level of data without a pretty nutty level of custom code....
@John_Coomsumer Besides the mentioned Nvidia drivers, I use Steam. Steam isn't bad by any means, but I wish it was at least an Open Source GUI that uses it's proprietary backend service. This way we could have such a variety in Steam GUIs. Actually impressive that almost everything is Free and Libre software on my system!
@Greenpepper I actually appreciate how Musk ruined Twitter. I was never fan of that service anyway. That means alternatives have a chance to grow. :-) Thank you Elon.
@mojo True. He made a good introduction into both tiling window managers and holding off his own opinion/decision until end of video and only spoke 2 minutes out of 38 as a final verdict. He also do not push people into one system, just offering options and an opinion. In my mind this was well done first look for people to decide what they try next and what they await.
However it should be noted this was all in X11 and not Wayland.
@esty To be fair, the suggestion to use these extensions is good. But I prefer Firefox. It was the only way I could use Reddit. kbin and Lemmy are useable by default, even though it has some problems too. And dense people are everywhere, in Reddit, in Lemmy, in kbin, in Twitter. That does not mean everyone is one. Just the chance to hit an idiot is higher on Reddit and Twitter, because idiots would never consider switching from mainstream and shit on others.
And that's good. Good people switch, idiots stay on Reddit. Best filter ever. :D
Today we can officially confirm that Saints Row will launch on Steam on August 24 2023. Mark your calendars and wishlist now to take advantage of our offers at release.
@cloudsheep0 Finally the game comes out of Beta test period. (Edit: This is a meme reply. The game wasn't in Beta. We just call it if games release on other platforms first and then later come over to Steam.)
@alessandro(Here is a copy of my reply in another instance.)
Looks like the growth comes mostly from Windows (-0.56%) users switching to Linux (+0.52%). MacOS (+0.05%) users mostly seem just to upgrade MacOS and are mostly unaffected by the overall numbers. Inside of the Windows numbers, Windows 10 (-1.56%) users switching to either Windows 11 (+0.92%) or choosing an alternative platform (-0.56%). Numbers do not add up perfectly, because these statistics are estimation based on asking randomly a fraction of the user base.
@alessandro But the Steam Deck does not get hardware survey in Gaming Mode. It only has a chance to get a survey, if the user logs into Desktop mode and then have to stay there for long time in order to get a chance. So I don't know how the statistics are calculated here.
@alessandro Valve knows what binary it is, but that does not mean Valve would know what distribution it is. There are no hidden data sent to Valve. On the other hand, Valve knows exactly how many Steam Decks are sold. This fact can be used in the statistics. The question is, if these statistics are ONLY about the survey results or if such information is included as well?
PAYDAY 3 is one of the most anticipated cooperative titles of this 2023 that will allow us to enjoy alone or accompanied by friends (or other players) a lot
@GamerKick Game is dead on arrival. There was rumors before the would be always online. Which at least most (not all!) people would have ignored, because this is an online focused game. But Denuvo? As if the masses would pirate an online focused game, that is online only anyway. I don't get this. Hopefully they will remove Denuvo after some time, like some other devs/publishers do.
Is piracy really such an issue for the PC Gaming industry? They must have some data we don't know. Why would they pay millions of Dollars otherwise?
@ReverseModule Looks like the growth comes mostly from Windows (-0.56%) users switching to Linux (+0.52%). MacOS (+0.05%) users mostly seem just to upgrade MacOS and are mostly unaffected by the overall numbers. Musk put a giant X sign on top of the building and it is incredibly brightly flashing, even nights. Hope it gets down, this is stupid. Imagine someone gets a seizure of it or crashes car because it blinded the person.
@Corkyskog Isn't this in his right to decide who can enter the building? I don't know how the rights are there, but at least here in Germany I can even ask the police to go out of my building.
@Corkyskog Hmm here in Germany any business can ask me to leave the building, otherwise they call the police. It's called the "The domiciliary rights" (used a translator to translate "Das Hausrecht", so not sure if that is the correct word).
@Corkyskog Disclaimer: Maybe I'm misinformed, so don't quote me on this. I had a little coffee-cookies-shop (or whatever its called). As far as I know, I could even ask the police or fire inspector to go out of the building, as part of my rights. Unless they have written permission. But I was never in such a situation. Maybe I'm wrong here.
I know some of you have gone complies FOSS, but I believe if the developer wants to make money from their apps, there’s noting wrong with it, as long as they are ethical. So what are your favorite non-foss apps?
@neurodivergentAF Go with EndeavourOS. I used Manjaro for 1.5 years and a little more. Just switched to EndeavourOS. I'm not listing here all the stuff that Manjaro did wrong, but rather point out a specific problem. Manjaro holding packages is a problem, if you ever use the AUR. Because the packages on the AUR normally expect the newest versions from Archlinux. So the mixture of hold back packages from Manjaro and the newest one from AUR can cause problems. And you can wait weeks before Manjaro updates the packages. And also I personally encountered 2 bugs with the pamac tool (which is recommended over pacman and handles the AUR as well), which one of them I reported and it got fixed.
I switched to EndeavourOS since half a year and don't have any of these AUR concerns. The distro maintainer aren't doing any obvious stupid stuff as well. It's closer to real Archlinux and overall feels great.
@slampisko Also with the next big update of SteamOS to 3.5 they will even integrate Nix package system officially! That means you can install packages in a persistent manner (not just Flatpaks).
Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time I deleted and destroyed my system just to rebuild it from the ground up and to teach you how to install what many fedora-tippers call the "hardest system" known as Arch Linux. Check out the install guide here and have a great day! Thanks for watching!
He is talking about Gentoo and LFS (being harder) in the beginning phase of the video. And in general he does talk a lot meme talks and don't mean it literally. It's probably just a joke or a wink to a friend of him using Fedora.
Other than that I appreciate his take on the installation, explaining all the things along the way. And with the 3.5 million subscribers, I think it will reach and teach a lot users to Arch and Linux in general. His content isn't even Linux centric, that's why this tutorial on the main channel is a highlight to me.
@PugJesus Do you use a program to automate the posting? In 1 month you already have over 900 threads created. Every few minutes a new one is created. I assume you just copy existing memes in an automated way and post them.
@donuts I recently had a short conversation with someone from mastodon.art. They denied the GIMP devs an account on their server, because GIMP is a slur word. And they made a public announcement of this fact. Looks like the moderation/administration people are assholes, if they act and communicate like that. This community is new to me and all I know is about this GIMP announcement and this new drama.
