While WEI is thankfully cancelled, it’s not entirely cancelled… They’re planning on making it available still in WebViews with the intention that websites can check if a malicious Android app is trying to do a phishing scheme....
That's what Google want you to believe, forget about and step back. It's not over yet. We just stopped the first wave and it will get harder with each wave.
I accidentally discovered that both “cd …” and “…” work, and moreover, I can add more dots to go back further! I’m using zsh on iTerm2 on macOS. I’m pretty sure this isn’t a cd feature. Is this specific to zsh or iTerm2? Are there other cool features I just never knew existed??...
BTW in case you didn't know, a bare cd without arguments will bring you to your home. I have alias setup to quickly navigate one or two directories up and print the path then:
alias ..='cd .. && pwd'
alias ...='cd ../.. && pwd'
Should works with every shell and I don't even need to type cd itself.
Came here for Zig too. I never programmed anything in it other than hello world stuff. I think the world is waiting for the 1.0 release with complete tooling and package manager and a solid foundation that won't change too soon. I watched talks from Andrew and what this guy and his team is doing is amazing. It's a small team.
I agree with you! He changed in recent years and I usually don't like him anymore and most of his content. But this was really good and any Half-Life fan or anyone else interested into gaming or Valve history might be interested into the interview. The Half-Life developer talks about the development of the original game and how this came to be.
Legion Go does not offer a cheap entry point for people who want to get started. Sure the hardware is strong and probably worth the price. But it does not change the fact that the cheapest Steam Deck model is still cheap to get, especially with the refurbished program with official support from Valve in mind as well. But for enthusiasts who want powerful hardware, the Legion Go is probably better.
My biggest problem with the Legion Go would be probably that its using Windows and not Linux, so this is a downside to me. The detachable controllers are nice to have and while I would not need them, having them easily replaceable is a big bonus to me. It's a little bit bigger than the Steam Deck and the Deck is already a chunky boi. When my research is correct, then the Legion Go is 200 grams heavier than the Deck? That is substantial.
and a slightly better battery life will probably be appealing to some
I want to see benchmarks or tests with real games for that. We had claims with previous handhelds too, where they promised longer battery life. But the reality was they did not last as long as promised or under very specific circumstances only. It has higher resolution and hertz, so it will need more power. And it's probably not optimized for low power settings like the Steam Deck with limited power settings does, but I am open to this.
there may be a bit of danger for Gabe Newell and his team
Not really. Valve (and Gaben) want this to happen. They want the handheld PC market to flourish, because they are pushing Steam and PC gaming forward and make it usable for non PC enthusiasts as well. Even if Valve stops selling Steam Decks, Gabe Newell and his team would not be in danger. Unless this was a sarcastic note; in which case ignore this paragraph.
I don't think this is a good thing. Atari didn't prove themselves in the recent years, so my trust is shaken. Also taking the company Digital Eclipse from the free market is concerning, because they did awesome jobs with restoration of older games for other companies. Will Atari allow them to work on other projects? And what is the goal here? Does Atari only sell their old stuff and do not produce new games? And if Atari fails, then will Digital Eclipse be resolved into nothing?
I'm worried for Digital Eclipse, because that's an awesome game house I do not want to lose in the gaming industry.
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--UK software company Threads Software Limited and its lawyers have today (30 October) written to Meta’s Instagram giving it 30 days to stop using the name Threads for their service in the UK. If it does not, Threads Software Limited will seek an injunction from the English Courts....
I hate that companies are able to sue others over general words, because it is part of their name. I don't know how similar those applications are, as I don't use Threads nor Threads.
or merging the ad into the video stream itself. This would make it un-skippable
That's not true. Besides the point that people can skip any video content manually anyway, I already use a Firefox addon called "SponsorBlock for YouTube - Skip sponsorships", which is configurable and works for other sites as well. The skip points are community maintained, but with the help of AI it should be easy to detect ads automatically. The point is, there are already tools to help with skipping video encoded content.
Me too. And I even purchased the official proprietary dongle from Microsoft and play it wireless. Why not Bluetooth? I don't like Bluetooth, as I have bad experience with it in the past and would need a dongle for it anyway. Otherwise, the controller works very well with Steam and with non Steam emulators. Microsoft knows how to make good controllers, I give them that.
But on the other hand, I wonder how it is to have a PS5 controller. First, Sony has open source drivers for it and they are included in the Kernel I think (tag me wrong, if it's not true). Plus it has some features, which the Xbox controllers do not have. I'm very curious, but the prices for new controllers are so expensive!
Cities: Skylines II is a next-gen title, and naturally, it demands certain hardware requirements. With that said, while our team has worked tirelessly to deliver the best experience possible, we have not achieved the benchmark we targeted.
Then why the hell do you release the game? So it's another rushed game and that is you can blame the devs for. That is what upsets me personally the most from all those drama.
For nostalgia reason, if someone is used to play 50 Hertz. And off course for the language itself (text and voice). I grew up with the PAL version and to me the voices are iconic. So having NTSC and PAL versions is essential in a collection that calls itself "Master" in my opinion. And sometimes PAL games got released as last and may include bug fixes. Can't say for this particular game, but that is something to have in mind. I found these interesting investigations:
My hope, no... dream, is that we get both ARM and x86 compatible chips on the same motherboard one day. Off course the operating system needs to support dual architectures. Then they could run ARM binaries directly without any major compatibility or performance hit, without the need for recompilation.
A man can only hope. Is this something that could happen? Technically it should be possible, but realistically, probably not.
Having compatibility to legacy software is a pretty upside. Either you use an application that runs power efficient, maybe the entire operating system uses the power efficient ARM at default and then for compatibility or for faster calculation (games?) the x86 cores could be used. Intel already does two different kind of cores, performance and efficiency cores. And smartphones have something similar too. I imagine this would be expensive and it is not for everyone. And who knows what other cutbacks and drawbacks it would require.
But Java and WASM doesn't solve the compatibility issue on ARM. Games and other programs for x86 are still something people want to execute on ARM machines. That's why compatibility layers and emulators are build for. And having a dedicated CPU would help with that. And if you do not use the x86 "extension", then you won't pay for power consumption. And if you aren't interested into x86, then you simply don't buy a dual architecture motherboard.
I'm not looking this from the perspective of laptops or handhelds BTW, but from the perspective of desktop PC. Overall I think its not practical to have them both on a single motherboard. But you know, the industry is full of non practical ideas. So it's not unimaginable this could be reality someday. Maybe just for a small audience.
Matrix is decentralized, as the servers are independent from each other. They choose to cooperate, so that people can talk to each other. But the servers are run by different people or organizations and act independently. Or do I get it wrong? If so, can you explain why Matrix is not decentralized?
Squadron 42 is the single player campaign of Star Citizen, that is supposed to launch as a separate game. It's basically a small portion of Star Citizen, but with a story and ending. I'm still not confident; waited too long for that.
It's even worse if you look further down on the other unofficial figures list at Marvel's Avengers. It nearly costed as much as Red Dead Redemption 2 (also unofficial numbers). My assumption is, that the license is in these costs included and why it balooned it.
I like Romhacks (in other words modding of old games) that bring Halloween themed specials to known games. I haven't looked into it this season yet, but here is an example The Quest for the Candies (Super Mario World).
Reddit might cut off Google and force users to log in to Reddit itself to read anything, if it can’t reach deals with generative AI companies to pay for its data.
On the one hand I really hope this happens. On the other hand, it would be devastating to the communities. But this shows how Reddit has the last say and can hold the content hostage on their platform. People need to stop using Reddit and switch to open and free alternatives, that is not controlled by a single entity / company. The problem is, there is lot of good legacy content and solutions that would be not available for most people searching the web.
But for the search engines who do not respect robot files, would still be able to index. Right? Ironically an AI could also write summaries...

I have some questions: How fast are read and write operations and random access? What are the expected prices, once it hit mass production for the average consumer? And how long is expected to take until this happens?
Amazing that they even write an entire article, because a Wii U was sold. I had to check the date if this is April Fool's day. It's a retro console and maybe they wanted save it. Or want to download roms to play for free on it (as the shop is not supported anymore) for authentic experience, instead emulating it. It was probably very cheap too.
Large companies don’t innovate anymore, they acquire and Google’s sourceforge offering is… let’s call it underwhelming. If they tried to compete with Github and threw money into Gitlab, what do you think they’d do?
My first instinct was it might be a function on the server that calculcates the years passed dynamically from today. A quick look with Wayback Machine showed this number 22 is hardcored into the webpage. So the question is, what that means. Obviously it cannot be 22 years ago from the time of writing the article. Valve didn't exist in 1987. Quake came out in 1996 and then someone did the Team Fortress mod for that game. Which Valve created the standalone game Team Fortress Classic a few years later. And Team Fortress 2 came out 2007 (it wasn't Free to Play back then).
Or do he refer to some ideas written on paper, but was not able to create a game with it back in the 80s? Or it's just a typo and I over analyze this. I need help. Medic!
I didn't consider this to be intentional. But given that part and context (Valve loves to make jokes), this could be it. Either it is a typo or an intentional joke, which is also likely.
The more rare, obscure, or just a guilty pleasure, the better. Maybe you grew up with it, maybe it’s just the nostalgia talking, any reason is fine....
It's not really something special or so, but I had it in my youth and used the level editor to build countless levels with my friend. It's a side scrolling puzzle game, with the abiliy to go back in history with a nice backwards animation.
I learned about this game through MAME and it's one of the most interesting old Arcade games to me. It's also worth checking out the original Arcade version if you can.
If that is something people want, then there will be distributions integrating AI tools as default configuration. But probably mostly open source solutions only. And most people maybe don't want AI applications, so there will always be AI free distros available. As long as it is not proprietary and controlled by one company only, I don't see any problem with integrating AI.
Sometimes I report a bug & the dev starts off asking for more details. But then there’s a kind of scope of effort creep where you start to realize you’re being tricked into finding where in the code the problem is so you can fix the bug....
While I understand this is humorous post, it's not crystal clear. That does not mean people lack humor, that only means we encounter a lot of trolls or idiots in the forums, that we no longer know if someone is joking or is being serious. So you should not call people being seriously wounded, if your joke didn't come as you wish it was.
In short, if it's not 100% clear (and it's not), then marking it as "sarcasm" is not a bad idea if you just making a joke without trolling or flamewar. That's just my thumb of rule. It helps you not get misunderstood.

While I am watching this video, I want to appreciate the section talking about demystifying questions people and developers have about what has an influence to get visibility. One thing in particular, the Review Score from players have no* impact on the visibility (* although the exception are exceptional bad rated games, which is fair).
And it's not possible to buy a place or advertisement on the Steam store. That's very important note.
It will get worse when Google replaces its old engine with an AI powered one. Because nobody knows what the AI does at that point, as it is not a simple search term search the web anymore, but explicitly opinionated results.
Can't wait 1) for Cyberpunk to get this builtin, 2) for benchmarks and other comparison from Digital Foundry and 3) how it compares to DLSS 2. Maybe I can play Cyberpunk with Ray Tracing on my RX 7600 after all?
