tekila,

Wait school zone speed limits in the US is higher than 30km/h ?

In my country school zone speed limit is usually 20km/h and there are tons of residential areas as well as more and more cities that restricts big portion of their roads to 30km/h.

This is mostly done to reduce noise pollution as well as mortal accidents.

tekila,

Do you have a source for that? As I have close friends affected by MS I’d be really interested in reading a paper about it and sharing it with them.

From my initial searches I can’t seem to find anything else than this being a proposed theory among others.

Edit: I’ve found this article nih.gov/…/study-suggests-epstein-barr-virus-may-c… suggesting it’s at least one of the factor but not the source of it.

tekila,

Thanks, that’s really interesting. I’ll try to find the opened paper somewhere else, but the abstract already gives a lot of interesting informations :)

tekila,

Yep that’s what I was alluding to :). Unfortunately the first DOI did not return a result. I’ll probably email the contact author. They usually are quite willing to send the PDF.

tekila,

As someone not playing valorant I think it’s really confusing to watch. Not quite to the level of League of Legends or DOTA2 but still.

Counter strike is more straight forward as you don’t have multiple heroes with their own powers.

On the other hand street fighter or rocket league are the easiest to watch, followed I feel like by CS.

tekila,

I went into it hoping to capture the nostalgia of discovering and reading SCP when I first discovered them many years ago.

Unfortunately, Even though the premise looked really cool I found myself bored after the first book and never read the rest of the series.

Are the following books different? Is the film worth it?

tekila,

Thanks I might give the movie a try :)

The "bovine" joke in The Restaurant at the end of the Universe (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series)

The whole “bovine” joke was hilarious on one hand and a little horrifying on the other. It got me thinking: how would I feel if an animal I was about to consume came up to me enthusiastically conveying its consent for being eaten? I will be horrified, just like Arthur! But why?...

tekila,

In real life cows are sentient as well.

tekila,

I mean plants to our knowledge are not sentient, so no harm done to “someone” when killing them, in the same way as there are no harm done to the rock when you throw it on the ground. Animals we eat on the other hand are sentient so there is clearly someone that is harmed. I really think non-human animals should be included in our sphere of moral consideration.

Even if plants were somehow found to all be sentient, by eating them directly instead of feeding them to animals then eat the animals you would minimize the harm done.

tekila,

As I’ve stated above, even if we found plants to be sentient, you’d be killing less sentient beings by eating them directly rather than feeding them to other animals and eating these animals. Just because lives must end for us to live does not mean you have to maximize the suffering caused.

I’m clearly making a judgement on which life is more important, because something non sentient literally cannot have a judgement on life and thus cannot miss its life or be wronged when its life is taken.

tekila,

It clearly has nothing to do with the dairy lobby pushing hard everywhere to prevent people from switching to ecologically and humanely better alternative because they don’t want to lose the fat subsidies they get from the government.

They try to push these legislations under the guise that it could induce the consumer in error, my ass.

Let’s blame fun cartoons instead.

Let’s not forget the cost with their lives the cows have to bear for us to get milk.

Forcefully impregnated, their babies taken away to be slaughtered as veal or to become milk cows. And all that for a fraction of their lifespan only to be slaughtered when their milk production starts to decline…

At least sometimes there is a bit of push back: just-food.com/…/eu-rejects-dairy-lobby-proposals-…

tekila,

Hey thanks for the precision. The frustration was not directed at you directly, moreso at the argument I thought you were making, I apologize for that. I have just heard this fallacious argument so many time in real life used seriously that I react strongly to it.

tekila,

I guess words can’t be used in different context, especially when the plant-based alternatives are drop-in replacement for animal milks and the term has been used for hundreds of year to describe both plant-based milky substances and animal secretions.

tekila,

On my end I’m what you’d call a sentientist. My moral criteria is based around sentience ( yes sentience as almost anything is not an on off switch but more of a gradient). I think most people who call themselves vegan and fight for animal rights (as opposed to welfarism) adhere to the sentientism philosophical argument. (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentiocentrism )

Many bivalves are probably not sentient ( think sponges) and I don’t really care what happens to them like I don’t care what happens to a rock. As they don’t have a subjective experience nobody is there to be harmed.

However, insects are definitely believed to be sentient which is why I wont kill them when not needed. This means a mosquito “attacking” me will get slapped just as I would kill a tiger trying to eat me, but I won’t eat insects as eating plants easily replaces it and plants are not sentient (even if they were, it’s always better to eat them directly rather than feed them to animals and then eat them)

For example with your classification how would you deal with animals (human or nom-humans) with impairments that would put them at the level lower than their respective species? If your answer is to keep them in the same group as their species it’s basically an indirect specist argument. If you agree to lower them in another category then this open the way to things that can look pretty disturbing to me. For example keeping certain humans in zoo.

Basically I believe every sentient beings should be afforded basic rights like the right not to be killed.

P.S. : I would strongly invite you to look at footage of how insects are raised when used for example as food source for humans and you’ll see that it differs enormously to what their natural environment would look like.

tekila,

I’ve posted another answer to OP but I feel like yours expresses my position much better than I could. Thanks for that!

tekila,

libro.fm is a an interesting alternative to audible if you can pay.

No DRM and if your local bookshop registered themselves a percentage of what you buy is paid to them.

tekila,

Aww that’s unlucky. I mostly listen to popular sf/fantasy books and always found them.

tekila,

They were working from another office per the article.

tekila,

Fuck I love the Culture series. Such a good read.

tekila,

You should not have this much issue in WT3 especially seeing as you’re level 51. I suspect you either have a really bad build or you’re not making use of the codex to at least get the Legendary aspect that syncs well with your main damage dealer attack.

I would suggest taking a look at maxroll builds for example. You don’t have to copy them entirely if you don’t want to to bit it will at least give you good pointers on how to itemize your build and how to have synergies as well as how to play it. [maxroll.gg/d4/build-guides?filter[classes]taxono…

Finally when switching to WT3 usually my first priority is to get sacred weapons with the highest DPS as it increases your attack power by a lot and males the content a lot easier.

Hope you’ll be able to pull it off !

tekila,

Cannot wait for this as I get frequent game crashes and even system hard freeze when playing D4 on my 7900XTX…

tekila,

Or we could you know just not gas and kill pigs.

tekila,

I sincerely believe it’s going to happen. Furthermore of course when presenting between two horrible choices I would the choose the less horrible option. Fortunately the choice is not between these two it’s actually, “Would you rather me quickly and painlessly kill the pig, use a blunt butter knife or not kill them”. I think when not forgetting the third option it’s clear it’s the better one.

tekila,

Because life is not the most important factor to me. Sentience is.

But let’s entertain the idea life was the most important factor. Raising animals to eat them kills way more plant life than just eating plants directly as you need to clear a ton of land and grow a ton of plant just to feed all these animals you’re raising. So even if that was the differentiating factor not exploiting other non human animals would be the way to go as you would preserve more life.

Liking something to me is not a solid argument to exploit another sentient being. If I was saying that I liked kicking dogs it would not make it ok to do so for example.

tekila,

You’ve clearly asked me why I considered plant life less than animal life which I answered. I then went further and showed that this question was actually irrelevant to the point I was making because even if I were to consider it as equal or more important I should still plants instead of animal products.

There is no difference between the two when not in a survival situation. One is done for taste buds pleasure the other might be done because you enjoy kicking dogs.

Actually I would dare say that kicking a dog is better than killing and eating them.At least I know I’d prefer getting kicked rather than killed and eaten.

tekila,

I think when going this route it helps to view it with an analogy as it makes it more intuitive to understand why I don’t find this an appealing view.

If I were to to adopt this view point, this would mean I would be also ok with breeding humans for any given purpose (let’s say Slavery as it’s an easy one) as I could justify it saying: “It’s better for them as they would have never existed otherwise”. However I think intuitively most people would agree that would still not make it ok and that’s why I would not consider it ok for animals. Because fundamentally we’re still violating - I think - fundamental rights. (e.g. most negative rights like right not to be killed)

P.S.: I have a rights based approach on how we should interact with animals and not a weéfarost one as I think it leads to these kinds of issues where you end up justifying terrible things.

tekila,

It would depend on the animal and the relationship between their guardian and the animal.

I would not qualify someone having a rescue dog that the dog would be a slave. It’s more akin to having a child that you care for. In the same way I would not count a mentally disabled adult living with their parents a slave.

My current view on pets is that we should stop breeding cats and dogs just to keep them as pets especially seeing the horrendous conditions in which they are bred and the crazy things we select for while breeding to make them look cute while disregarding their well being (e.g. genetic disease that pure race cats or dogs have )

I however also understand that some animals are completely domesticated and cannot just be left alone. Taking care of them is fine for me.

Guardianship might be a good solutions for these cases.

tekila,

If you truly think that rescuing a dog is the same as killing animals for taste and that by doing this you’re not the one forcing your morals on other sentient beings I guess it’s pointless to continue the discussion.
