sun_is_ra,

As for cost, to run a virtual machine in the cloud running 24/7 trying all the numbers one by one in the database would cost… pennies

but how much does it cost to make the phone call. Don’t they get charged per minute by phone companies?

sun_is_ra,

The error is too vague for anyone to be able to help. Try running freecad from a terminal and see if there is any error reported there

sun_is_ra,

vnc works on windows on linux

Broke a partition. Is there any way of saving it?

While I was switching distros, I accidentally broke a partition. I’m almost certain that all the data is there, but it doesn’t have a filesystem (I used ext4). Is there anything I can do to fix it, similar to changing the file extension without changing the contents. PS: It’s a data partition. I was trying to resize it,...

sun_is_ra,

use dd and save the whole drive to a bigger drive or maybe compress it with gzip while using dd to save it to a slightly smaller one

command would be something like this:

dd if=/dev/…/myparition|gzip status=progress > /mnt/external_hd/mypartition.gzip

sun_is_ra,

this clones one parition to another which is fine if you have free partition with enough space lying around. My code was for taking compressed backup of the partition to be restored later if needed. Its less convenient but doesnt require as much space nor does it require an entire partition

sun_is_ra,

depends on what you mean by “broken”. If broken means has bad sector or other hardware issue, then yes OP should transfer data to healthy partition and work from there. though it certainly won’t hurt if he attempted to recover data from broken partition (worst the HD dies and OP restore the backup on healthy HD) However he said “i broke my partition” which make me think its software issue, not hardware. in which case, would be faster to recover data directly after taking backup

Am I running the risk of getting my Google account banned for logging into the Aurora Store or a custom rom like GrapheneOS?

I guess there is no need to introduce what a Degoogled phone is (or a custom ROM without google services, like GrapheneOS is) and the Aurora Store is basically said in a crude way the Google Playstore but without the need to log in to your Google account, quite useful in my opinion....

sun_is_ra,

I have been using my google account with Aurora store for couple of years now. I also use degoogled phone (lineageos) with no problem

do with this information what u wish

sun_is_ra,

am not a doctor myself but from what i know, the reason you increase the dose in first place is that your body build tolerance. if a normal person were to take same dosage as a long time drug addict they would die in minutes

reasons for death of overdose:

  • someone went to rehab and lost their tolerance then went back to drugs with same dosage they used to take
  • someone missed a dosage and went through horrible withdrawal symptomps so when they finally got the pill they took too much
  • buying certain drug without knowing it is laced with a more powerfull one
sun_is_ra,

these would drain device’s battery and there is no electricity to recharge

Israel says it found Hamas files with instructions for making cyanide-based weapon (www.axios.com)

The Israeli military found a USB key with instructions for the production of a "cyanide dispersion device" on the body of a Hamas operative who participated in the Oct. 7 terrorist attack, according to two Israeli officials and a copy of a classified Israeli Foreign Ministry cable obtained by Axios.

sun_is_ra,

why would he take this usb across the border? To prepare bomb on the spot?

sun_is_ra,

would have been more convincing if they said photos was found in his phone.

also they should have saidbehead people including babies

even then beheadin take time and hamas knew it was matter of time> before isareli army respond so why waste it beheading babies and arrange them for photo?

sun_is_ra,

there is but the TLDR version is that its a bug in sone andriid library not the software itself. There is also a github issue for the affected android library

sun_is_ra,

in settings you could choose to hide bot accounts

sun_is_ra,

If they annoubce what is it, attackers could use the bug to exploit systems before people get chance to update.

Though I worry its possible to know what the bug is by reviewing changes in curl source code

sun_is_ra,

The news is true:

theguardian.com/…/canadas-house-speaker-apologise…

What happened is that this man was presented as Ukrainian war veteran

Canada has become embroiled in an escalating political controversy after members of its House of Commons were encouraged to join in a standing ovation for an individual who fought in Ukraine with a Nazi military unit accused of war crimes during the second world war.

The ovation took place shortly after Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, delivered an address to the parliament on Friday, when the assembly’s speaker, Anthony Rota, called lawmakers’ attention to 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, whom he described as a “war hero” who fought for the First Ukrainian Division.

But later according to Rota, he learned about his Nazi history. That eventually led to Rota’s resignation

At the weekend, Rota issued a statement apologising for what occurred. “In my remarks following the address of the president of Ukraine, I recognised an individual in the gallery. I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so,” he said.

sun_is_ra,

For anyone taking this comment seriously like I did, its just a joke. There is no such thing as dorcelessness syndrome .

sun_is_ra,

Does make sense? In don’t speak Spanish so I don’t get the joke

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

sun_is_ra,

I am in same situation but additionally I only use Linux and some sellers (I.e amazon) would require you to install some software to wallowed to watch the content you bought. I don’t want to install apps I have no clue what it does to my privacy and even if I wanted, its not available for Linux.

Another option is to buy the CD/DVD but I’d have to buy a DVD reader, pay for import customs and shipping. So I ed up paying more than the value of the product itself.

sun_is_ra,

Just wondering whether its a coincidence that chrome and Firefox are both vulnerable.

sun_is_ra,

If I may ask, why not just format it normally and mount it to a directory in your system? Why does it need to be merged ?

sun_is_ra,

How is it that Russia can sell weapons when its desperate to buy weapons for its war.

sun_is_ra,

What was the idea of making it out of metal? Edit: I mean why cover whole body instead of just the head

I just want to say that I'm so happy that people are taking notice of privacy concerns in cars

Mozilla released their studies, and I’m seeing a growing number of posts on the Internet about cars and the privacy nightmare they entail. I remember how this issue wasn’t talked about earlier because “just buy an older car” was still prevalent. I’m so happy that people are taking notice. Thank you to this community...

sun_is_ra,

If that did calm down demonstrartions in France about retirement age I would be impressed!

Am not particularly with or against the law but I feel it was no accident it was introduced these days.

Creating decoy Lemmy accounts for plausible deniability

So, I’ve started my own Lemmy instance. The main issue is that right now, I am the only user, which makes it pretty easy for anyone to see what kinds of communities I visited, or am subscribed to. Is there any way to automate creation of some amount of accounts, and subscribing to random communities?

sun_is_ra,

How does that make it easy for others to know the comunities you visit / subscribed to?

[SOLVED]Touchpad completely messed up, smooth scrolls everywhere, and isn't blocked when using keyboard

Hi, I use linux mint and recently installed a bunch of desktop environments, and I think that it might have caused this issue. How do I fix this? I want to avoid resetting, but if there isn’t a solution, I can. This does not occur in another distro, or another kernel, but occurs in other desktop environments. Solution:...

sun_is_ra,

In KDE, there is a touchpad section inside KDE settings. U should be able to reconfigure it from there.

They were drifting because they were all low on fuel but it seems some of them made an escape from Algerian forces and made it back to the Moroccan shore. How?

Not justifying the shooting , just saying they are probably not telling the full truth.

Firefox Slow in Wayland, not in X.org, or Windows when searching on bing.com (share.firefox.dev)

Could anyone help me. I have a silly problem with wayland, using Firefox (tar.gz or snap are same, tried both, welp ubuntu option only has it, my fedora on Xorg using XFCE). When searching using bing.com, it likes to freeze. I only know from the ram usage, it suddenly surge till the OS can’t put any memory or lack of RAM. I...

sun_is_ra,

Is there any particual reason why ddg is less trustworthy for you or its just matter of preference ?

sun_is_ra,

My new Asus laptop didnt support S3 sleep.

Turns out it does indeed support it but the BIOS claims it isnt.

I found a patch for Linux ACPI that would make it enable S3 anyway and lived happily ever after

sun_is_ra,

Its not a snake. Its a roundworm that infect snakes usually.

A neurosurgeon in Australia pulled a wriggling 3-inch roundworm from the brain of a 64-year-old woman last year—which was quite the surprise to the woman’s team of doctors and infectious disease experts, who had spent over a year trying to identify the cause of her recurring and varied symptoms.

the roundworm was one known to infect snakes—specifically carpet pythons endemic to the area where the woman lived—as well as the pythons’ mammalian prey

sun_is_ra,

One thingI hate about doctors sometimes is that even when they dont know what is causing your illness they still give u some medication anyway. Read this:

She was diagnosed with an unexplained case of pneumonia and given a corticosteroid, prednisolone.

Fast forward towhemn they figured out her condition:

The prednisolone, an immunosuppressive drug, may have inadvertently helped the worm migrate and get into the central nervous system.

sun_is_ra,

Its ok to make mistakes but if there is disease u don’t understand and u know u don’t understand, why give medication that maybe helpful or harmful instead of saying “I don’t know”.

sun_is_ra,

I second that. I haven’t seen coconut with white water and I’ve tried coconut in different countries

sun_is_ra,

Or fork it and make new distribution based on it minus the annoyimg bits

sun_is_ra,

Edge is based on google chrome and so does brave. Firefox is completely different webbrowser

sun_is_ra,

And they succeeded to certain degree. Official relations has been restored between the two countries recently.

sun_is_ra,

When u say US failed to do, you are giving impression that US wanted or tried but failed.

US has severed its relations with Iran since Islamic revolution more than 50 years ago. Its not beneficial for them that Saudi Arabia (their ally) have good relationship with Iran… Now that relationship between Saudi Arabia and US is getting worse after murder of the journalist khashougji and Biden calling for Bin Salman to be punished, China stepped in and tried get the two countries together

sun_is_ra,

The leader of wagner was probably also killed

Russia’s aviation agency has confirmed Yevgeny Prigozhin, his deputy Dmitry Utkin and his head of security, Valery Chekalov, were on board the Embraer jet that crashed just north of Moscow.

Why is true vacuum so hard to create? What exactly makes the matter “want” to go into a empty space? What creates that pressure?

Imagine air atoms are like floating balls moving freely and constantly bumping into each other.

Suppose we have a container and we want to remove all air from it, what do we do?

We could poke a hole into this container and leave it. Over time air atoms inside the container will keep moving inside the container until they eventually - one by one - exit the hole. Problem with that approach is that there is also air atoms outside that would also enter the hole and you end up with roughly same concentration of air atoms inside and outside.

But lets say we somehow took that box and placed it into a perfect vacuum. Now air atoms inside the box will go outside but nothing from outside will go back to the box, that should make the box have perfect vacuum right?

Unfortunately not.

After the vast majority of atoms have exited the box, only very few atoms remain and they hardly collide with eachother anymore. Then their movement can be stabilized. For example one atom would keep moving in horizontal or vertical motion indefinitely and never ever get close to the hole. With no atoms to collide with it and change its path, it may never exist the box. That’s why its almost impossible to have perfect vacuum

sun_is_ra,

Your hir growslall the time. In order to permnently straighten your hair, u need any newly grown hair to also be straight . since yor hair type is contolled by DNA, you would need to alter DNA of your hair follicles. Its tecnicaly possilebuft would be extremely expensive

Assuming time travelers are real, but only influenced events so far back enough that a smartphone they lost in the past didn't survive for archeologists to find, how far back are we speaking?

And what were the dominant terrestrial species at said time? Would there even be any? I have zero idea of what’s the expected survival rate of an iPhone in the fossil record, but I like to imagine a giant sloth stepped on one once and we are none the wiser....

sun_is_ra,

They need to go back to when earth was very hot ball of molten metal. Anything more recent than that means there is a non zero chance that the smart phone or parts of it would remain intact. There is also a chance of turning into a fossil (the phone gets buried into some mud, the mud dries and turn into a rock, eventually the phone dissolve and disappear leaving behind its print in the rock

Lemmy.world banning piracy made me realize it's something a client can solve

If I was logged into several instances at once in the client and seeing the composite feed and then could choose instance when replying or posting (with some set default, like from: field in e-mail clients) lemmy.world could ban piracy all it wants and it’d still be in my feed without me having to leave it or change instances.

sun_is_ra,

What a brilliant advice :/

sun_is_ra,

Why every time a country topple a dictator in this region end up in chaos and bloodshed. Sad really
