It’s a markup language. In the simplest explanation, a programming language describes a process (what does the thing do) while a markup language describes a structure (how is the thing supposed to be displayed). There’s more to it than that, but someone else can get into deeper if they want, it’s beyond me lol
did not actually file copyrights on their art with the U.S. Copyright Office.
The way they’ve worded this isn’t really a sufficient explanation of how this works. An artist is automatically granted copyright upon the creation of a work, so it’s not that they don’t have the right to protect their work. It’s just that, without registration, you cannot file a lawsuit to protect your work.
Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.
Last time, I used: “Anybody need anything while I’m out?” and that went over well. May not make it through this surgery on Friday, so I turn to Lemmy for top-notch suggestions for my potential last words!
The last 2 times I went under (for a complicated tooth extraction and the subsequent implant) they didn’t do the countdown, which surprised me because that was what I remembered most clearly from my lung surgery as a teen. They just asked me if I was comfortable, then said “Good, cause you’re about to get extra comfortable!” and we laughed, then I woke up. Maybe it was a dental surgeon thing? But I’ve also got a really good relationship with the dental techs and the anesthesiologist was a riot.
It’s more trying to indicate the tongue placement - an N sounds different depending on whether you place it at the front of the tongue or back of the tongue. Back of the tongue is much more nasal, which is frequently associated with French accents, and could sound almost like an “ng” sound to someone less familiar with nasal pronunciations.
The co-op is pretty good, though there are a few tiny frustrations - I can’t automatically use an npc party member’s skills in conversations (like guidance or bardic inspiration) if they’re under my husband’s control instead of mine, for instance. Our problem is that we both want to finish the storyline for ourselves before making storyline decisions in our co-op campaign and I have an entire day off that he doesn’t thanks to working 4 10s instead of 5 8s. So I have to wait for him to push ahead in his campaign before we can play ours, but I can just play mine at my leisure, lol.
Hardness absolutely matters in rings. Not as much in pendants or earrings, but people don’t realize how rough they are with their hands. Most people do not take their rings off to wash their hands, or do their laundry, or, or, or. So many things have unexpected abrasives that may just feel a little rough on your skin, but can significantly damage a soft stone like opal. In a rush and accidentally bang your hand against the door frame? Chipped opal. Back of your hand itches, so you rub it against your jeans briefly? Scratched opal. They’re very fragile stones.
Not just that, but the expectations are almost always significantly higher (and, in return, the effort that you as a consumer get from those vendors should also be higher.) Speaking from the position of someone who supplies the cake industry, for example, you’re not just getting “a cake”. You’re getting a multi-tier work of edible art that took that cake decorator four times longer to make, requires a special setup for transportation, and usually requires another half hour to an hour of the decorator’s time to fully set up once on site. Any old cake could feed 100 people, sure, but do you really want pictures of a flat single layer cake decorated with ugly, mushy balloons half-assedly piped on by the resident 18 year old at your grocery store, transported in a flimsy cardstock box in Aunt Hester’s 1970 woody wagon so that half the icing is stuck on the top of the box? If you do, great! You can save a lot of money that way, for sure. But most people want a 3-4 tier cake, decorated immaculately with flawless buttercream and covered in flowers. That shit requires effort, and effort means money.
Oh, not arguing that. Just pointing out that this is a large part of why price goes up when you mention the word “wedding”. Even if a particular individual doesn’t care to have absolutely top-tier perfect service, they’re in the minority - and those vendors in the wedding industry price their services to fulfill the expectations of the norm, not the exception.
During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not...
200 Fahrenheit. That’s 93.3C. Just below literal boiling.
Edit for more information, an adult human will suffer 3rd degree burns if exposed to 150F (65.5C) liquid for two seconds. This was 133% hotter than liquid that will cause 3rd degree burns. And it was poured directly in her lap, soaked into cloth that she could not easily remove. This was straight up evil levels of negligent.
Did you know that liquid at 150F can cause 3rd degree burns in 2 seconds? This was 200F, 133% hotter than liquid that can cause 3rd degree burns in 2 seconds. The woman, who it would behoove you to recall was elderly, was sitting down, buckled in, wearing jeans.
Please, explain to me how, in this scenario, you would suggest that an elderly woman remove her now-scalding jeans in 2 seconds or less.
You can’t, because it’s impossible. Now fuck off, you complete piece of human garbage. Go suck corporate dick on reddit.
Edit, hey! Just for fun, here’s one specifically talking about the optimal drinking temperature for hot beverages. It only briefly mentions that the usual serving temp of coffee (~180F) can easily and quickly cause significant scalding, but it goes on to show that the optimal - in terms of customer satisfaction, taste, and safety - is a cool ~140F. www.sciencedirect.com/…/S0305417907002550?via%3Di…
My local grocery recently took away the option to shut up the machine. It’s been about month and I am still furious every time I go in there. Don’t fucking talk to me, if I wanted to talk I’d go through the line with an actual human. Let me be a misanthrope in fucking PEACE.

If you think the majority of landlords built homes with the kindly intention to rent them I have a bridge to sell you. Most independent landlords are renting out old, half decrepit houses they bought on auction and “refurbished” (poorly, with substandard materials and usually by themselves, not using skilled contractors), and many landlord companies are owned by non-native entities that siphon money from our economy to their own countries while jacking up rents and keeping the working class as poor as possible.

Wow. I would love to see this in person. I’m sure the 2d representation doesn’t do the texture justice, but even in a photo it looks so expressive. Beautiful painting.
Some people don’t care about the flavor of their coffee, only how much of a buzz it can give them and how quickly. Either that or they’ve been conditioned by Starbucks marketing to think that stale, burned coffee actually tastes good.
Agreed, though I also have to say that if you haven’t listened to A Thousand Suns recently, try going back to it without listening to earlier LP first. It’s a departure from their first three albums in many ways, but honestly, when taken as a cohesive front-to-back concept album, I think it’s actually their strongest work.
LP just hits hard no matter what, though. Even though I may not like all their later stuff as much, they were always true to themselves and that comes through. I miss Chester :'(
See, the problem is that my definition of “don’t disturb” and their definition are very, very different. I don’t disturb them the same way I don’t disturb bees: oh, look, it’s a few feet away, I’ll just stay over here and mind my own business!
Their definition is: “stay several hundred feet away from me, don’t even look at me, if the air anywhere in my vicinity vibrates as an after effect of you breathing half a mile away I will hunt you the fuck down”
So, like, it’s a fundamental incompatibility. They can’t abide me existing, and I can’t abide them being horrifically aggressive because I dared to exist. Unfortunately for them, I have the advantage of size and tools.
Some public health experts hope that Americans will welcome the new shot as they would a flu jab. But demand for the vaccine has dropped sharply since 2021 when it first became available and more than 240 million people in the U.S., or 73% of the population, received at least one shot....
Yep. I’m on immunosuppressive medication so gimme gimme - I’ve managed to only get one very mild case of covid so far and even that was fucking miserable. Do not want, please give more vaccine.
It depends on how you manage it. We had a system where parents could pay up front for your lunches, and students using that system got their lunches the same way the needs-based students did - the lunch lady just checked their name off the list for the day. You could guess at who had which, probably, but there was no way to confirm it.
That being said, you’re right about the bureaucracy and I’m all in favor of free lunches for all students regardless of their parents’ income.
I updated a few days ago and at first it seemed to be fixed, but now it has started happening again - only on certain collapsed comment chains, though. Can’t seem to find a commonality yet.
Yes, at best the AI works would still be infringing derivative works. If a human made that art and tried to make money off it, courts would almost assuredly say it lacked “sufficient tranformative creative effort” to allow it to be copyrighted itself or protect it from being considered an infringement. There’s a big difference beween “inspired by” and “trying to copy”.
Further, if all these works were being used for non-commercial purposes, like, just to print and hang up in their homes or something, it would still suck for artists (because they would lose the individual end-sale market) but it wouldn’t be nearly as harmful. The big problem is that people and corporations are currently trying to use AI art to sidestep paying creatives for their work and then using that AI generation for commercial purposes or to loophole the art out of things like Patreon. It’s a deliberate attempt to deprive hardworking creatives of the money they are due for their work.
As long as the ceramics have been fully glazed with a food-safe glaze and do not have any metallic decorations, they are most likely microwave safe. Generally, brand name/corporate made stuff will be fine, but handmade can be iffy because a lot of really pretty glazes are not food safe.
But but but, those children should be able to choose whether or not they work for slave wages! If they were worth more than that the free market would pay them better anyway! It’s an infringement of my sovereign citizenship to tell me I’m not allowed to scam and/or scare vulnerable minors into selling me their time and/or bodies!
Did they say communism? I don’t think they said communism. In fact, I’m pretty certain they said socialism, which is not the same thing unless you’re a propagandized American who licks boots.
Communism is not the only alternative to capitalism, my dude.
