I have one for my friends, (I know, I know, matrix), and that’s how I think discord should be used. It’s original purpose, friends hanging out. Now it’s every megacorp has a discord server and all their fans just fawn over them there. Pass for me, I just want voice and text chat with friends.

Jokes end with people laughing bud.

What is something worth buying as a teen? please explain.

sense most online business are having black friday is it worth buying something or should i pass and try to save my money. im a teen i have around 200$ but i would like to limit myself to 100$ or less. im probably posting this in the wrong place but im not sure, i just want to make a smart choice when it comes to money....

scrubbles,

This. Black Friday skus are made specifically for Black Friday. They are made cheaper specifically to sell on black Friday, they aren’t magical deals, they’re low cost crap.

Have more experiences as a teen. Take your friends out to a movie or a dinner, buy some snacks and stay up all night with them playing videogames. That will be more fun than a TV that breaks after 6 months

Taking some simple napkin math, I have a 1min 1080p video downloaded from YT. It clocks in at 15MB.

So, Gamer’s Nexus has 2.6k videos. (That’s insane, btw, but fairly large channel, not even LTT size though).

Assuming just 1080p, and let’s say about 10min average per video. (Some are less, some are 40+), that’s 150MB per 10min video, and that means it’s 390,000Mb (or 380.86GB) for their collection. Assuming I’m wrong and the average is even half of that, and the average GN video is only 5 minutes that’s still 190GB. And that isn’t counting 4k, or the multiple other formats to optimize streaming (720, 480, 360, misc bitrates, etc)

And that’s just storage, not even taking into account compute! (Or egress, or transcriptions, or scaling, or…)

Really for something like Peertube to take off it will require each channel to spin up their own instance, which honestly is just another expense for them, one that Youtube does for them for free, plus Youtube offers to pay them. Which, would cut down on some of the chaff (only people who want to do it would do it), but yeah, I don’t think it’s going to replace YT at any point. Smaller channels can combine for sure, but there is definitely a threshold where it becomes extremely costly.

I’m all for the fediverse, but video streaming is freaking costly and expensive. There’s definitely a reason youtube has a monopoly on it. Now this isn’t to discourage, but more for anyone who may be thinking "yeah why doesn’t peertube just replace it?)

Lemmy, pictrs and S3 compatible storage

I’m running a small Lemmy server using the Ansible setup modified to our needs. Now, we do not post that many (if any) images, but I’m also running an Akkoma server with Cloudflare R2 setup for images, and I was wondering is there an easy way to just set the Lemmy server to use this bucket? Would be better than to just keep...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Pictrs can use blob storage, there are environment variables for it’s container to swap it over. Now that you will have to do a migration too, but pictrs provides this too.

McDonald's prices are out of control. (cdn.masto.host)

Gee, it’s almost like corporations are gouging consumers so badly that their market advantages are being lost due to greed. Inflation this quickly isnt real. It’s what happens when you come off a global pandemic with millions dead and corporations see they can freely abuse you by exploiting the public zeitgeist that prices...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I made a personal rule that if I’m hungry and want McDonald’s, that either I need to get in the car and go to a local burger place that isn’t a corporate chain, or I’m not actually that hungry. It’s been a good life choice. Much better burgers that while slightly more expensive, go to the local owners rather than mcdonalds

Everything in this world seems to be like that. To make our lives moderately better we have to constantly tell, scream, and fight to get just a sliver. But if we give up at all just for a breather they’ll push all the terrible crap on us

By definition the only way to gain power in a democracy is to want the power enough to fight for it, and the only people who want that power are the ones who don’t deserve it. That doesn’t mean I’ve lost faith in democracy, but showing a fatal weakness in it that is being exploited right now.

There’s a couple AAA games lately I’ve enjoyed, but yes I agree with you. Marketers are killing their own market for short term gains. The last several multiplayer games I’ve had are just as terrible as you describe.

I’ve put more hours into a 30 dollar factory game than all the AAA games over the last several years combined. Shows how just some TLC can make a great game, but marketing will only hurt it.

It’s really too bad, because blockchain technology is actually really interesting, except it’s been bastardized by the crypto bros to make it seem like they came up with the most interesting technology ever created.

In this case, blockchain would be really interesting, but the amount of effort it would take to implement it versus the payoff of… More authentic voting of imaginary internet points… Doesn’t really seem like it makes sense to me

Thank you, this was a few weeks of building getting everything ready here. It’s mostly alternate recipes, except I forgot the worst one with the backfilling sulfuric acid, and it’s like a two digit precision calculation on not having it get backed up. Long story short, always choose the recipe that takes in sulfur, not sulfuric acid.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah, it was the one recipe I hadn’t unlocked yet and forgot about, and it was a massive mistake. I did it in a previous factory, and I remember it needing an insane amount of quickwire, but even with that insane amount it was still better than trying to balance sulfuric acid.

AI could probably fly under the radar if they just didn’t do stupid stuff like this, but they just have to push the boundaries. If they made any number of fake voices it’d be fine, but no, had to do a celebrity. I hope they lose. Stupid stupid stupid marketing department.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

For sure, they’ve been just scraping everything for so long without a care. It’s about time they start facing it.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’s a hard one. You train a general AI and ask for a story idea, that’s not a huge deal IMO. You ask it to write in the style of George RR Martin or something that’s something different. Yes you can do it by hand too, but these tools make it easier than ever.

Then sub questions… Is it okay to do it for free? What if you distribute it? What if you charge for it? All questions that these ai companies are just ignoring when they potentially have massive ramifications.

Making a random avatar is fine. Using ScarJo is iffy if you’re using it for free. What if you’re streaming on twitch with her? What if you’re charging to use her likeness on twitch where the users will make money? Idk the answers to any of those.

Because we all know how Bethesda’s reputation was ruined by Skyrim.

scrubbles,

That’s the real problem. Cyber security experts know bare minimum about coding, and coders can tell. Their knowledge only goes skin deep when you ask them to clarify an exploit, or to give a workaround. So coders usually tend to brush them off.

It should be a collaborative effort, security and coding, where security can fully understand what is being built and offer potential secure workarounds

Hate cars for sure. Don’t hate farmland. Actually, I’m from the Midwest and what I really hate is the farmland being bought so we can just put more swaths of 1 story stripmalls on it. Some of the most fertile land in the world and we put yet another sprawling tj maxx/target/huge grocery store on it.

I encourage urbanization in dense areas so we can maximize fields. All farms should be pro dense cities so we can keep farms as farms.

Twitch-like service for the fediverse?

I’m thinking of spinning up some streaming for a couple of games in the near future, (I always do massive 400+ hour factories in Satisfactory) and was wondering if there’s a place or software to stream on that’s not Amazon, Google, Microsoft, or Meta? I’m not looking for revenue or massive followers, this would just be...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This looks like it wins in terms of simplest setup and just “I want to stream this item”. Will need to compare it against Peertube, thanks for the suggestion!

This usually has the opposite effect, as lemmit.online figured out for us. It also acts as a relay from Reddit to Lemmy, but all it is is a ghost town. It was fun archiving some of the best Reddit posts, but nothing from there has any discussion on them.

Bot posts (or even human posts that are reposted as a bot) are inherently empty. Unless it will relay what the humans on the other side are saying it creates more spam, and actually harms communities more than helping them.

scrubbles,

I’m OOTL, why is GOG such a big deal? Isn’t it just another storefront like steam?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This took a while for me. Higher education means higher wealth, which gives way to higher density. Also I’ve found that Office zoning is much, much more important, check and in the zoning panel what the negatives are to that and try to raise it. Office zoning gives way to higher wealth, and thus higher zoning.

Remember that if education needs bolstering it will take time, those sims need to go through elementary, highschool, then college, and it’s good to invest in the technical and medical universities. That will help attract offices.

Definitely not a bug, just the formula from CS1 has changed.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah pay special attention making sure everyone can access it, then as they grow office demand should jump up! Low skill labor makes industrial jobs, high skill labor brings office jobs. I like how they did it, in CS1 workers either worked in industry or commercial and offices were pretty much ignored. Now offices are massively important

The most annoying thing about the cities performance issues isn’t even the performance issues. It’s all the gamers who overnight became experts in game performance that are ranting and raving online about how they obviously know how to optimize games more than professionals. It’s so tiring at this point.

Any software engineer with real professional experience can tell you performance tuning is a nightmare. It’s going through millions of lines of code checking for places you can allocate memory a bit differently. Checking collections and going back to your CS classes to make sure you’re using the best data structures. Watching performance tools and debugging for hours on end to catch that one place that slows down a bit.

People here, Reddit, and everywhere are just so tiring because they act like it’s so obvious. “Oh it’s the teeth”. “If they would have done X”. It’s honestly just so disrespectful to the full time engineers who no doubt have had those thoughts months ago. If items like this were simple, they would have done them already.

I give completely respect to the engineers who worked on this, and I respect Colossal Order’s push to still release early. As someone who is enjoying the game, zero crashes, and in my opinion completely playable, I’m happy they released now.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

They literally said why. Because a lot of players, like myself, don’t care about the performance issues and are happy to play it. That those who wanted to start deserved to get it early, and that by delaying it only punished us. And they’re right, like I said I am enjoying it, there’s a huge discord of people enjoying it. If some people just absolutely can’t handle 30fos then they are welcome to delay it for themselves and not buy it until hardware catches up

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

That’s not a fair comparison. I see people upset because the car isn’t a masarati, when they didn’t build a masarati. They built a van. I don’t need to go 100km/h, I needed something that could carry all of these items I have. And for me, that runs fine.

I will say that I have a new(ish) gaming rig, built about 3 years ago. I do think minimum requirements are jokingly out of date, and those needed to be upped to not mislead people. I don’t think even a 1000 series GTX card could play this on minimum settings, let alone a 900. It’s better PR just to be up front and say “Look, those cards just aren’t going to cut it. If you can’t play day one, we’re sorry, but we’re excited to see you at your next upgrade” rather than lie and say it’ll be fine.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This is exactly it. It’s more fun to shit on a game release because it gives a sense of superiority. “I know better than everyone else, this game should have been done this way and that way” and bolsters self confidence.

There are without a doubt some really good arguments for things that could be different, but the vast majority of things I read are self aggrandizing people talking about how they all know how it could be better - and that’s the arrogance that really bugs me. That any of us who don’t know anything about the source code could say at all that it should run better.

Saying “I wish it ran faster” is one thing. Saying “I know it could run better” or “Other games run fast, this one should too”, or in regards to this article “lol they did this thing that’s so stupid” and just the self backpatting for figuring it out. Software engineering is hard alone. Gaming engineering on top of that is just ridiculous. I have 14 years of software engineering under my belt and I still know they are doing things in this game that I would not be able to. Anyone who says they know better than the engineers are the same as the people who sat in my CS102 class and told other students they were smarter than the professor. You aren’t. Everyone knows you aren’t. Please stop acting like you are

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

You don’t understand. I watched a YouTube video/took CS102/have a side project I’m totally going to finish. I totally know just as much as these engineers with 10+ years experience who put the last 5+ years into the project.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

We have basically no idea what you’re running or how you’re running it, you saying you’re running docker is like saying “I have a server”. But, to be sure you’re running the latest version just use the tag, the part after the colon. So for lemmy, the most recent stable release is 0.18.5, denoted in your image as dessalines/lemmy:0.18.5

From: hub.docker.com/r/dessalines/lemmy/tags

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah studios hate this because they want to know how invested people are to know if they should continue. However they made the problem themselves by cancelling so many good shows.

Netflix leaked that if something isn’t crazy popular after season 1 it won’t get picked up again, which is asinine because we all know so many shows don’t get their legs until season 2 or 3

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This is why I can’t play multiplayer games anymore, all of them have just focused on difficulty and grinding.

I was looking forward to Halo infinite for quite a while, but the multiplayer just is terrible for me. Halo 4 is probably the last one that I kind of enjoyed. And of course the first three were amazing. All I want is to start up multiplayer and and play against people roughly my skill level. I don’t want to grind, I don’t want to be work for everything, I’m a guy who got off work and has a few hours to unwind after the day.

The last thing I want to do after getting off work is have to be extremely frustrated because I’m struggling on an online game and I should be just relaxing. Kudos to everybody who does want the challenge, but games need modes that allow me just to slack off and have fun
