Despite all my rage I’m still a rat refreshing this page.

I use arch btw

Credibly accused of being a fascist, liberal, commie, anarchist, child, boomer, and db0’s sockpuppet.

Pronouns are she/her.

Important context is that companies often just patent shit in case one day it’s valuable. Yes IP is stupid, yes capitalism is evil.

my thoughts at gym:

  • grumble I’m tired and want to go home but I’m glad I came
  • oh hey it’s that person, they’re making progress rock on
  • ah rehab exercises? bummer. Good on them doing the work to get better
  • Wow that person is jacked, they must be working so hard
  • Oh no the thing I want to use it taken. Oh well I’ll wait

palantir are pretty fucking evil, but you’re unlikely to have heard of them unless you’re social justice minded or have worked in tech.

Thiel is a vampire, in the metaphorical sociological sense and the literal one. Fucking creep.

They market themselves as a “big data” company, what they actually do is use “big data” in a way not unlike what Philip K Dick predicted in minority report. Instead of clarvoiant tank people it’s extremely racist algorithms though.

They have been involved in a bunch of racist “crime preventing” pre policing stuff. I believe at the moment they’re mostly used to round up migrants in the usa for whatever the fuck their border farce does over there.

Presumably we hope for a world in which cis people did choose their gender: facing no substantial barriers to transitioning they decided that birth assignment matched their own self perception.

So idk, either people chose their gender, or you’re laughing at someone facing too many barriers to transition which seems unnice?

Am I missing something here?

the settlement started before British support which came later. It’s super complicated.

edit: reasonable overview on Wikipedia of events leading up to Israel actually en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zionism

Bastardised simple summary is

  • Europeans treat Jewish people like shit for thousands of years
  • creates support for Jewish sovern state
  • languishes a while but antisemitism gets worse
  • in typical European fashion it is decided to just start settling where other people already live and force the existence of a country
  • ww1, Britain and France decide they know how to do a middle east. Results show typical commitment to stability and fairness.
  • settlement is supported by various and sundry European powers inc German Reich in lead up to and during ww2 because everyone hates Jewish people and wants to foist them off to some other, preferable brown skinned, person’s country.
  • after ww2 everyone eventually gets mad at the results of this sensitive and thoughtful plan, including European supporters, neighbouring countries, Palestinans, and many Jewish people. Fear and hatred fuel dominance of increasingly aggressive right wing political parties.
  • everyone except the USA that is. Their government has a blast supply weapons after Britain and France wash their hands and claim guiltlessness.
  • land grabs and oppression intensifies

Pretty well. I’ve been increasing distance and time after some tendonitis and everything seems to be going ok.

I’m not very interested in racing much more than myself so atm I’m working on getting up to 10 km’s. Yesterday I did my longest in both time and distance with 1:20 9 km. Not prize winning but significant for me, that’s on hilly sandy trails as well so I feel I’m probably pretty close to my goal.

Still having difficulty building up speed but I’m happy with my progress and don’t want to push too hard all at once and end up on time out again.

isn’t it such a bummer how right all those self righteous arseholes telling us to get off our arses to feel less tired were?

I was a couch potato (well active but not athletic) till 30s and the benefits are frustrating large. Still mad about it.

Lower the barrier (get clothes out etc before hand), make it novel; pick somewhere different to run (if you’ve the time for some travel), reward yourself after, set a goal (either running metrics or like "I want to see the pretty garden anyway so might as well run there).

Treadmills suck but are better than not running if the weather sucks.

Find some nice tunes or podcasts or audiobooks and only listen while running to make it more exciting.

Also acknowledging that for a little while it’s going to suck and be hard and just being ok with that can be useful. Until you get fitter and get the habit it’s hard, it’s ok to find stuff hard. Sometimes just accepting that makes doing something transiently hard easier.

what the fuck kinda leg exercises are they and can we start a group thing? eyebrow waggling

Seriously though arms suck, you don’t need testosterone to feel awesome about your legs. Your entire day just gets breezy and it feels like someone turned down gravity.

Leg day is best day, arm day is like “ugh, maybe in another 3 months I’ll be able to lift 5 kg more ;_;”

Why are there so many conspiracy theories regarding soy beans?

Dear lemmy, someone very close to my heart is starting to fall into conspiracy theories. It’s heartbreaking. Among other things, he has now told me that soy beans are not supposed to be consumed by human beings and is convinced that despite the literal centuries of human soy bean cultivation and consumption, we shouldn’t eat...

The thing that makes me giggle is that many animal products, particularly breast milk, do have estrogen in them. Not in particularly significant quantities though but it’s hilarious.

Elon lied about the monkeys — and he shouldn't be trusted to put his Neuralink chips in human brains.

"They are claiming they are going to put a safe device on the market, and that's why you should invest," Ryan Merkley at the Physicians Committee, told Wired. "And we see his lie as a way to whitewash what happened in these exploratory studies."

Really heartbreaking reading what happened to the monkeys.

People quite rightly think of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud for making false medical claims about what the Theranos machines could do. So why aren't Elon's claims at Neuralink being held to the same level of scrutiny?

naevaTheRat,

Yup. You have to be a special kind of trusting to allow a company to modify your brain.

Banal attempts at mind control, crude as they are, are bad enough already.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t have a healthy brain? Could be better could be worse but no fucking way would I let a private company with a shady safety record run by an insane megalomaniac fuck with it.

Anything that’s plugging into your brain just can’t be controlled by a small group of people with the sole motive of line goes up. Open research and public ownership are required. The consequences are just too terrible otherwise.

I was thinking about you when I cleaned up this codebase and removed a lot of redundant functions.

I am extremely curious what the general take around here is on the Singulairty

First, let me say that what broke me from the herd at lesswrong was specifically the calls for AI pauses. That somehow ‘rationalists’ are so certain advanced AI will kill everyone in the future (pDoom = 100%!) that they need to commit any violent act needed to stop AI from being developed....

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Whaaaaat? I don’t come here for this shit

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t really see much likelihood in a singularity though, there’s probably a bunch of useful shit you could work out if you analysed the right extant data in the right way but there’s huge amounts of garbage data that it’s not obvious is garbage.

My experience in research indicates to me that figuring shit out is hard and time consuming, and “intelligence” whatever that is has a lot less to do with it than having enough resources and luck. I’m not sure why some super smart digital mind would be able to do science much faster than humans.

Physics is a bitch and there are just sort of limits on how awesome technology can be. Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like digital intelligence would be more useful for stuff like finding new antibiotics than making flying nanomagic fabricator paperclip drones.

Failed physicist here: Collapse interpretation always seemed a bit unscientific in general to me. I am quite possibly wrong because it’s not my field but I haven’t seen any currently testable hypotheses come out of it.

There’s not zero merit in this sort of galaxy brain thinking and it’s satisfying to have some kind of model rather than just a series of disjointed facts but the polarization of amateurs on this always seemed strange to me. Like sportsball fans thinking the other teams want to kill each rather than the event being mutual play.

I’ve never met someone who actually does physics that had a very strong opinion one way or the other. A lot of “MWI seems elegant but we can’t know yet” or “Collapse is a bit weird and unsatisfying isn’t it?”. Maybe when you get to the giganerds and their chalkboards the shivs come out but I’ve seen no evidence.

Besides, we should all be focusing on how time is mathematically hideous and thus clearly not fundamental.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah, I think its “science enthusiast” popularity is mostly because it can be misunderstood to imply that a bunch of SciFi pop culture is more plausible than it is. Couple that with the nuances of various interpretations being lost on anyone who hasn’t actually done the maths and you have a recipe for Batman vs Superman type disagreements.

I threw electrons at colour centres on nanodiamonds to try make them more nano-er so while quantum shit was involved I never felt particularly compelled to have a high degree of certainty in the (is epistemology the right word?) behind the maths that obviously worked.

I would also tell them that it’s possible to actually understand things. Most people seem to go through life on rote, seemingly not recognizing when something doesn’t make sense because they don’t expect anything to make sense.

Oh my god could you sound any more flushable.

Just fuck yourself. Everybody is thinking all of the fucking time, everybody has blindspots, stop being so insufferable.

They’re so obsessed with this narrative that keeps them ahead of the curve, guess what ex gifted kids? Other people catch up, you’re not competing with 4 year olds anymore.

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

For a subreddit of supposedly ultra rational, dispassionate intellectuals that are willing to consider any ideas for merit based on pure argument and ignoring the speaker they sure do spend a lot of words talking about the kind of man Robert is vs what he actually says in the ep.

I’m not shitting here shitting on GNOME but I haven’t tried it since gnome 3 released.

I got kinda stuck on tiling wms because I hate having to think about laying out windows and so this blog post is exciting! They’re very correct that tiling wms only partially solve the problem because you often have to tweak for proper line length or just deal with random void space in settings apps.

Obviously mosaic isn’t in yet, but if I wanted to dip into GNOME can it do (or are there addons or alternative more efficient things to try) for the following:

  • snappy keyboard only application launching e.g. dmenu style.
  • a way to activate a tiling wm mode for when you’re doing something like software Dev or at least a way to save and lock particular layouts?
  • tell software to always open on a particular monitor?
  • manipulate windows without using the mouse + move focus to different screens without using the mouse?
  • display a string in the status bar (I assemble my status bar using a custom shell script which outputs a string. I’d like to not reinvent it)

Cause reading this blog I’m kinda keen to see where they take GNOME and get in early so it’s easier to learn.

Like I said, I last used GNOME 2 so it’s been a while and I’m sure in my head it’s unfairly judged.

If you don't mind me asking what is so important about privacy?

What harm does public data have to you? Couldn’t one just ignore the ads? You can’t see anyone watching you, is public data good for public records? (I’m just curious). I know this sounds weird but is public data good for historical preservation and knowledge increasing the importance of the individual? And does public...

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Let’s flip it. Why do people want data on you? why are people willing to pay for it? or governments deploy threats of fines (backed up by men with guns) or men with guns in order to force it’s collection on you?

private companies feel like they can make money with it, that they can make you do things that are profitable (buy something you wouldn’t, vote a certain way, decide against insuring you etc). Are you cleverer than teams of academics? I’m not.

Governments want it to enhance control. Sometimes that control can be benevolent but it’s still control. Often it’s not benevolent, selective enforcement of unjust laws against political opponents etc.

So why surrender privacy?

naevaTheRat,
@naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

clearly I haven’t because I don’t follow :p could you elaborate please?
