Stanford researchers find Mastodon has a massive child abuse material problem (www.theverge.com)

Mastodon, an alternative social network to Twitter, has a serious problem with child sexual abuse material according to researchers from Stanford University. In just two days, researchers found over 100 instances of known CSAM across over 325,000 posts on Mastodon. The researchers found hundreds of posts containing CSAM related...

One of the problems with the fediverse is that each server keeps its own copy of the content. It is definitely a worry that bad actors push content to federated servers to get them taken down due to the content they now are storing.

Why is my Lemmy experience feeling so lame? **UPDATE**

I’ve subscribed to a plethora of communities that really interest me and actually have posts and discussions in them, but I have to go to the specific community to see this. My “Subscribed” feed only contains a few of the same posts that I’ve seen for weeks in Hot, the same posts from even longer ago in “Active”,...

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

So…where are those 70k active users? The posts I’ve been seeing definitely don’t have that sort of interaction.

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Sounds like we should change the definition of active

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

I went with .boo for mine due to cost and the fact that I’ve never seen it as a TLD before. There are a lot of interesting new ones out there now, might as well use this opportunity to try it out. (Also as an instance admin I’m not trying to make any money off of running an instance so keeping costs as low as possible is ideal)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Or create more comment and repost bots to dilute the content even further, sure initially it’ll look like increased real engagement but it would drive more power users and content creators away

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Never put anything on the internet you don’t want out there forever, even if you were able to delete your comments from your instance and the federated instances there are most certainly people from /r/datahoarders making archives of posts and comments in the fediverse

Another win for the decentralized Fediverse when a government domain takeback can’t shut it down!

Mali has decided to take back .ml from people who took advantage of the free domain like fmhy.ml & maybe lemmy.ml - https://lemmy.world/post/1915581

And while it sucks for those servers & those users may have to migrate, the and it’s plethora of platforms continues on. 💪 💜

@fediverse

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Oof best of luck to you guys on .ml instances, might be worth looking at buying a domain as a backup to migrate to. Don’t wanna be caught off guard like this especially if they are trying to recoup all their urls. I went with a .boo domain to be unique for my instance but there are loads of TLDs out there

Shouldn't the hosts of instances have public information/profile available about how they will run their instances and use your information?

As I understand it, instances can be hosted by anybody. So, doesn’t it make sense that you should be able to shop around what instance you want to join based on stated beliefs on how the instance and information should be run (de-federation, etc)? Shouldn’t there be some kind of public information to keep them held...

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Ultimately does it matter? They can say they do or don’t track you and they can say your data and privacy is safe but you never have a guarantee. It’s no different from when companies promise us xyz but then in the background they’ve been doing shady shit. My best suggestion is to try to make the best educated choice and to accept you made the best choice you could with the information you had at the time.

Why are there policies against insults but not against business advertising?

Most instances seem to be putting a lot of emphasis on their code of conduct specifically in regard to insults and harassment. I’m not against that and i understand the concept of “your server your rules” but i’m just curious to understand why many are so concerned with slurs while they don’t seem to care much about...

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Any blatant ad spam I’ve seen I’ve banned, I haven’t seen much tech ad spam honestly though. The ad spam I’ve seen and banned was for a “luxury taxi service” and “beauty products.” If I wanted to see nonstop ads I’d just remove my ublock origin and rawdog the internet (which in fact I don’t wanna do)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Web 3.0 - users, kindly go fuck yourselves p.s. pay us subscription money and view lots of ads

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

That’s just how it goes now it seems, we just have to go with the lesser of the evils for everything. Sure there is FOSS for some stuff but even then FOSS has its fair share of issues

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Honestly I’ve heard more about spez and Reddit on the fediverse than I ever did on Reddit itself. The best way for us to move on is to actually move on.

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Oh trust me, I understand there is something about watching their descent into madness. I wouldn’t be subscribed here if I didn’t want to see it. I was more pointing out that it’s like when people would Facebook stalk their ex. Like sure you aren’t interacting with them directly in any way but the only way to fully move on is to drop the morbid curiosity. (Again, I’m also subscribed here watching the dumpster fire)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

It’s less sketchy if you pay for a domain through a reputable registrar

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

We need a better way to advertise what servers to direct people to. Would be nice to circle through a big list of instances to evenly direct new users to

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Do you know of any forum-like websites that use the matrix protocol?

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

It’s hard to make anything “official” on the fediverse as things are distributed. Who makes the “official” determination for Lemmy? The biggest instances? The devs? Do we hold a vote across instances?

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

I really appreciate the links! So it looks like matrix has mainly been focused on the chat room side of things and another downside is that you need some sort of translation layer to connect a matrix thing to an activity pub thing. Definitely gives a lot to think about. I’ve been trying to decide where I should donate my time to doing dev work at but the answer appears to be “it’s complicated”

[Rant] I hate the modern internet

I am fucking scared of the mass surveilence nightmare direction that the internet and the world as a whole is going towards… C2PA, france hacking itself into citizen phones, the UK anti encryption law, EU’s chat control, etc. Im also sick of and hate the “you will own nothing and be happy” mentality that corpos try to...

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

I’ve had a couple pieces of software revoke my lifetime licenses when they switched to fully subscription (even though they swore lifetime license holders would be grandfathered). I get needing to make money to pay your software engineers to keep pushing out updates but man I hate this subscription hell we live in now

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

I wish they would give us a user setting to completely hide shorts from ever showing. I have never watched a short and I will never watch a short. It’s just not the type of content for me. If I wanted TikTok style videos, I would download TikTok. It’s crazy how much stuff YouTube tries to cram down your throat even as a premium subscriber.

Edit: also just a great example of companies jumping on a bandwagon to make a quick buck. YouTube is a well established video hosting and streaming service, they didn’t need to spend how every many millions of dollars adding shorts (not that they would have bothered spending that money on the user/creator experiences anyways)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Ooh this will be a nice add on for desktop, Ty Ty

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

At this point I’m down with paying a monthly subscription to a creator for content. I’ve never signed up for any creator’s pattern or anything because how the system is currently set up. I know some creators switched to posting less frequently because their more frequent posting appeared to be hurting their view count due to YouTube’s algorithm. I am so willing to pay a creator directly for them to go back to making more frequent content (and content they actually enjoy and not stuff just for views)

Does nebula have enough content to be worth it now? I haven’t heard anyone with a sponsor spot for nebula in a few years now

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Found a newer one with the same vibe

“Based”? Are you fucking kidding me? I spent a decent portion of my life writing all of that and your response to me is “Based”? Are you so mentally handicapped that the only word you can comprehend is “Based” - or are you just some fucking asshole who thinks that with such a short response, he can make a statement about how meaningless what was written was? Well, I’ll have you know that what I wrote was NOT meaningless, in fact, I even had my written work proof-read by several professors of literature. Don’t believe me? I doubt you would, and your response to this will probably be “Based” once again. Do I give a fuck? No, does it look like I give even the slightest fuck about five fucking letters? I bet you took the time to type those five letters too, I bet you sat there and chuckled to yourself for 20 hearty seconds before pressing “send”. You’re so fucking pathetic. I’m honestly considering directing you to a psychiatrist, but I’m simply far too nice to do something like that. You, however, will go out of your way to make a fool out of someone by responding to a well-thought-out, intelligent, or humorous statement that probably took longer to write than you can last in bed with a chimpanzee. What do I have to say to you? Absolutely nothing. I couldn’t be bothered to respond to such a worthless attempt at a response. Do you want “Based” on your gravestone?

There was a whole wave of bean posting here a week or so ago. It took over everybody’s feeds on like every instance. That specific post was the most upvoted one in the chain of bean posts

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

I think the idea of having crossposted content is ok since you can opt in or out of seeing it, just looked through the instance though and it seems like nobody is interacting with the content at all. For me, my favorite part of the posts on Reddit was reading through the conversations in the comments. Imo, if nobody is interacting with the content that is being crossposted we shouldn’t bother with continuing to copy it over

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Low key infuriating how accurate this experience is

This is an issue I’ve had with many social media sites, it can be really difficult to find content that is interesting to you. Sure the bigger sites will have some sort of recommendation algorithm but that breaks down at two places. The first, if you don’t follow or engage with enough content it doesn’t know what to recommend you (but how do you find content to follow and engage with if you are are new). The second, you start to notice a pattern with the recommendations especially on something like YouTube. I get recommended the same like 20-40 videos even when I mark “not interested.”

@ernest heads up, looks like lab3 is down atm

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

This thread gave me a thought that we need a good place to discuss new features and bugs of existing features. I know we have kbinMeta but that is more like discussion of the overall site and the “meta” of things.

Anyways, @kbinfeaturerequests is the place I made for us to discuss feature ideas, pull requests in the pipelines, and pretty much anything in that realm.

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Yeah there are a bunch of us in the dev chat now. Some of us have set up our additional kbin instances such as myself. I’m still looking through the code and getting up to speed but hope to contribute to the main code base soon. (Right now I’m experimenting with some features I wrote on my instance)

So yes, it’s mainly been Ernest up until this point but he is starting to get additional support from the community :)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Thank you! I’m excited to see the site grow as well. We seem to be building a nice place to hangout and have good discussions unlike the site that shall not be named.

(Also love your username)

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Welcome to the ever growing list of instances! Definitely let us know if you need help in the matrix chat, there are usually a few of us in there actively at any given time.

I need to do an introduction post of my instance at some point as well. This one is me: https://fedidb.org/network/instance/fediverse.boo

I manually curate a news magazine and then I have several dedicated news outlet magazines that get automatically populated with content so people can subscribe to what news sources they want to get mixed into their subscriptions.

Anyways! Welcome again, we hope you enjoy your stay

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

For now, I’m just paying for my instance out of my pocket because I wanna see this place grow. Maybe I will need donations to keep it going in the future once it reaches a certain size but I can’t imagine trying to ever profit off keeping this running. I think the real value in federated instances and content is going back to the ways of the early internet, the personal pet projects that motivate people. I’m also personally totally done with being advertised, scraped, and sold..I don’t want to ever do that to anyone else.

lohrun,
@lohrun@fediverse.boo avatar

Wouldn’t a better way to connect communities on the fediverse be to make a dedicated community to do just that? I get the search feature and federation doesn’t always work, but if you organize a joint community on one instance…other instances can troubleshoot to make sure that community is federating properly to them. Idk, just my 2 cents…I personally don’t like the move over the last couple of years to organize groups on discord
