RTR#29 Another boring update: Categories and bug fixes (kbin.social)

Today, I wanted to introduce you to Categories - a new feature that is essentially a multi-mags view. A new tab will appear in the user panel where you can create categories (public or private) and then add magazines to them (local or remote). In the magazine listing, there will be another tab that will list public categories...

I feel stupid, is this currently available? It seems yes, some people say they've made one, but I can't seem to find either a "Categories" or "Collections" option. Sorry, I don't know which area is called the "user panel", but I've looked at the tabs across the top, and in all the menus (+, channels, profile).

I did see the collections tab on the Magazines page though, and I see Random Collections in the right side panel, just can't find where to create my own category/collection.

Thanks but I looked in Settings. There aren't what I would call "tabs" there, but there are different sections (General, Sub channel, Threads, etc) but nothing called Collections.

WAIT, never mind, I found it in the other "settings" I forgot there are two different places for Settings. Thank you

Unfortunately in this election (like last one and probably the next few elections at least), we don't have the luxury of voting for who we most idealistically agree with, or making a protest statement. Fascism and authoritarianism are on the rise here (and in many other places). It has completely taken control of one of the two major parties, the Republican party.

The way our electoral system works, if we don't vote for the only viable opposition, which is the Democrats, we are in danger of allowing an authoritarian regime to take over and toss democracy and our civil rights aside. Once democracy is lost it will take generations to get back, if ever. Trump in spite of everything, is the likely republican nominee (if not, someone just like him). See what would happen if he gets into office again here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-2024-platform-so-far-1.6961527

That's scary as hell. Despite people being unhappy with Biden or his age, he has accomplished a lot in spite of the odds, with republicans doing all in their power to stop him. See https://navigatorresearch.org/lowering-drug-prices-and-investing-in-infrastructure-are-most-popular-and-known-biden-accomplishments/

But the main point is that electing Biden (or whatever Democrat it may be if he doesn't run for some reason) will prevent the authoritarian regime from taking power.

Exactly. A third party that only puts up a candidate for President every four years is not a serious party but a joke. It takes years of work, starting with local and state offices, building support and good candidates, to be a serious alternative party with a wide base of support and chance to actually win national offices.

I think adults underestimate just how many kids play Minecraft, how much they like the pets and how excited they were about dog armor. So it's not surprising that the armadillo won and I don't think it's worth getting upset about. That's just how voting works, someone wins and someone loses. I was just glad that I was finally able to vote at all starting last year, since before that you had to have a Twitter account to vote which left so many people out.

I do agree that we aren't given enough information about each one to make a proper decision on which to vote for, but that also gives them flexibility on how it gets implemented, allowing user feedback to have an influence.

@minecraft Is anyone watching Decked Out on the Hermitcraft server?

@Andrewsyvic I've been watching some. Cubfan had a really exciting run today with several really close calls. Starts at about 13:25 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPBqlgthpJw

To be considered Vanilla means out of the box without mods, so definitely nothing that requires anything like Optifine, Forge, or Fabric, because then you are running the game through their interface instead of Mojang's.

However, out of the box does have a built-in interface already included for letting you use and manage texture packs (now called resource packs), so IMO those would still count as being vanilla because you are still doing everything through Mojang's installation. Just like using a customized skin. That's how I would define it.

eta: When it comes to data packs, I would say those would not count as vanilla because you can change loot tables and such, which is definitely not playing it as designed.

Why are there so many expensive homes?

I see a lot of expensive houses being built in my area. A LOT. And the weird thing is that they’re being bought pretty quickly. Are these people just making more money than me? If so, what are they doing for a living? Or are they just living house poor? How exactly are they affording these places?...

“Investors” (big, small, whatever) are selling homes at those prices (or renting, or VRBOing) because there are customers ready to buy the next available unit.

The "investors" are the buyers/customers, and they aren't reselling these houses--they're renting them out. It's mostly corporations increasingly doing over the last 15 years or so (I think it started around the 2008 financial crisis). They have the capital to do it and so regular people are being priced out more and more as this practice keeps driving up prices.

It didn't used to be this way. Even in my "cheap" area, when I bought my house back in 2005 all but one house on my block were owner-occupied. Now, more than half the houses are rentals because whenever one came up for sale it was bought by a rental company. This is a serious crisis that needs to be addressed.

Renting them out is not selling, it's an ongoing income source for the owner. The renter does not determine the price when the alternative is to move elsewhere or live out of your car. There's simply not enough housing--supply is limited. It's not a simple equation like a factory adjusting the output and price of its widgets. If things were as simple as you say, there wouldn't be such a severe housing crisis in the US. Just search for US housing crisis, there are thousands of articles explaining what's going on.

They asked if bodies were found, and he answered that "biologics" were found, which means nothing -- well, it does mean one thing: No. No bodies were found.

Bilingual synesthesia? (kbin.social)

For any here who are both multilingual and also experience synesthesia/ideasthesia -- concepts such as numbers, days of the week, educational subjects, music, etc. being felt or experienced to have a specific color, taste, smell or whatnot -- is the color, etc. of that thing different depending on which language you're thinking...

So far I've avoided getting a smartphone. I guess the main reasons are:

  1. cost (my dumbphone was relatively cheap and costs me $9/mo for unlimited calls and texts, no data)
  2. not wanting to walk around like a zombie staring at a phone like most people
  3. not wanting a bunch of privacy-invading apps sending notifications at me tracking me
and a few other minor reasons. Eventually I'm sure I'll have to get one, since more and more daily activities practically require you to have one.

And you? Do you use one?
