jacksilver,

Except they gave up on that for botw/TOTK, there really aren’t any large puzzles in zelda games anymore.

jacksilver,

I mean, at the end of the day Nintendo gets to decide if they’re Zelda games or not. However, my issue with them is that they basically just feel like ubisoft open world games now. Since you’re given everything at the start their is no progression to the puzzles, the “dungeons” feel small and soulless.

Its not so much that they aren’t “Zelda” games, it’s that I think they deliver a more watered down experience. I think without the “Zelda” title these games would be reviewed very differently, and I personally believe that Immortals Fenyx Rising was a better game than BOTW or TOTK.

jacksilver,

It’s interesting, because people say they can only get better, but I’m not sure that’s true. What happens when most new text data is being generated by LLMs or we accidentally start labeling images created through diffusion as real. Seems like there is a potential for these models to implode.

jacksilver,

Do you have any links on that, it was something I had wanted to explore, but never had the time or money.

jacksilver,

Did you read the books? Having read the books it was a blast for me, but those sound like fair criticisms if you aren’t already familiar with the source material (which isnt a good thing for a movie to do, it should be able to stand on its own).

jacksilver,

Yeah @mrbusiness had me a bit worried, but it looks like you’re right, if there is a third movie it will be all or part of Messiah. At least according to this interview - polygon.com/…/dune-how-many-parts-movies-sequels-…

jacksilver,

It’s 50 movies, just look at it before posting (and yes it is on there).

Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?

The Infinity Blade or Minigore series, for example, or anything made by Illusion Labs. These games are genius and most consoles don’t even have a touch screen or utilise it well like some smartphone games do....

jacksilver,

Peglin and slay the spire are both great on the phone!

jacksilver,

Not that I support anything their doing, but managing YouTube has to be an order of magnitude more expensive to operate than a streaming service. I actually think they could get some sympathy if they took more of a Wikipedia approach and we’re more open about the costs to operate YouTube. However much we might hate Google, YouTube is practically a public good in the way it operates and the world relies on it.

jacksilver,

The bleakening is my favorite Bob’s Burger Christmas episode. Twinkly Lights has become one of my favorite Christmas songs.

jacksilver,

It’s supposed to be a bit grindy. Like a lot of rouge lites you get more powerful each iteration as you get more gold and can level up. So it becomes a game of trying to progress farther and farther as you level up through upgrading the castle.

The second one does a bit better job of adding replayability and more interesting mechanics.

jacksilver,

It’s been a while since I played the first one, but I do think it gets a bit better (although enemy variety I think is a weak part of the first). I would really suggest trying rouge legacy 2 as it improves on everything over the first.

If it helps other rouglites I like and found similar are skul, dead cells, undermine, hades.

Is it just me, or has the BS with OpenAI shown that nobody in the AI space actually cares about "safeguarding AGI?"

Money wins, every time. They’re not concerned with accidentally destroying humanity with an out-of-control and dangerous AI who has decided “humans are the problem.” (I mean, that’s a little sci-fi anyway, an AGI couldn’t “infect” the entire internet as it currently exists.)...

jacksilver,

We’ve been promised self driving cars for over 10 years and still aren’t close, I think we’re a long ways away from AGI.

jacksilver,

No I absolutely agree with you, I’ve been skeptical of all the self driving news for years. However, I was using it as a parallel to other AI based discussions. While Elon may have been over hyping what was going to be possible in the near future, there is no evidence that other people aren’t doing the same now.

Just like with autonomous vehicles, we’ve made impressive leaps in what ML can do, but I think there is still a long road ahead.

jacksilver,

I saw you mention peggle and rouge lites. If you haven’t checked it out yet you should try peglin - store.steampowered.com/app/1296610/Peglin/.

Its a great peggle based rouge lite with a good amount of replay ability (plus there is an excellent android app too).

jacksilver,

Yeah, either something it saw while training, or more likely something it generates on the fly as it’s being forced to effectively “guess” the credentials. At the end of the day a lot of what is going on behind the scene is text prediction. For passwords and credentials it can just fill-in something that looks like a credential.

jacksilver,

If I recall correctly they had three teams each developing their own COD on rotation. So each team would have effectively 3 years between releases. This implies this game had even less than half the dev time typically given to a COD game, but my numbers could be off.

Moms for Liberty members call the cops on Florida librarians (popular.info)

Two members of Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group, have reported several Florida school librarians to law enforcement. They claimed they had evidence that librarians were distributing "pornography" to minors and requested that law enforcement officers be dispatched. This represents a serious escalation of the tactics...

jacksilver,

That’s a great video, thanks for sharing!

jacksilver,

The sad fact is that most of the generative AI advances don’t really help with this. They might make npc dialouge more flexible and less static, but nothing in the toolbelt Microsoft is offering would improve general NPC AI.

Maybe down the road we’ll see something, but I suspect MS is really just offering text and modeling automation.

jacksilver,

It’s dishonest because the Republicans both initiated the vote to remove McCarthy and had the numbers to reelect him. While you are correct democrats could have voted for McCarthy, I’m not really sure why they should/wpuld as he had already reneged on budgetary issues - thehill.com/…/4047677-democratic-leader-accuses-m…

jacksilver,

The initial comment stated that it was the Republicans who voted McCarthy out. You called that statement wrong, that democrats voted him out. While you could argue semantics about the voting process, this historic event of ousting a speaker was controlled by the republican party. You’re claim otherwise is dishonest (misleading) because the democrats acted the way the minority party always acts for speaker votes, meaning the Republicans knew what the outcome of the vote would be.

It would be the same as saying democrats were the ones responsible for the initial election of McCarthy taking so long. While they didn’t vote for him, that’s not new or surprising, the surprising thing was Republicans inability to agree on a speaker (and thus making them the ones primarily at fault for failing to elect a speaker). To state otherwise is misleading because you are purposefully ignoring important details.

jacksilver,

Ah, that last paragraph really helps explain your viewpoint. While you could argue that Dems voted “with” Gaetz against McCarthy, they certainly didn’t vote for the same people for speaker. The real problem here is that while US, by law (as in laws officially recognize a two party system), is a two party system this situation is best understood from a 3 party perspective (Maga, Republicans, democrats).

The Republicans need the Maga votes to form a coalition to elect a speaker, democrats would prefer their coalition gets to elect a speaker. When you understand all of the chaos is the republicans and Maga Republicans fighting over power in their “coalition” it’s easier to understand everyone’s behavior.

With that context none of this has been surprising and many people were expecting a Maga republican to call the speaker vote at some point. It also reinforces the concept that this is more about republican infighting rather than anything going on with the democrats.

Just like in parliamentary systems, one coalition isn’t going to vote for the other without some concessions. Republicans weren’t willing to concede anything to democrats and thus had to cater to the Maga Republicans (which is why most wouldn’t put blame on democrats in this scenario).

jacksilver,

Look at any of the elections since 2001 (and probably well before). Not a single vote (at least that I saw) for the opposition from either party - …wikipedia.org/…/List_of_Speaker_of_the_United_St…

This is why you’re getting down voted, it’s not about what politics it’s that you aren’t giving correct information.

jacksilver,

Jabra is a good brand for headphones and earbuds. All the headphones I’ve gotten have aux support and buttons on the headphone for all the features.

How are in-store pickup sales tracked for revenue?

So, obviously, if you go to a brick-n-mortar store and buy something there, it counts as a sale for the store, with stores that don’t get enough sales often closing. But if I order something online from, say, Best Buy and pick it up in store, how is that tracked? Does it count as a sale for the store, even though I didn’t...

jacksilver,

That’s only from a shipping/logistics matter. However, whether sales are attributed to the e-commerce platform or the brick and mortar store is dependent on the company and their approach to the business. I’ve seen both scenarios and they each have their pros and cons. Ultimately though sometimes places do one or the other depending on what platform they want to show growth or revenue in (like a brick and mortar trying to increase e-commerce sales will count orders shipped to a store as e-commerce).

jacksilver,

This one felt a little weak, especially following the last episode (the one focused on Rudy). The kids and the hemroid arc felt kinda directionless/pointless. I think they’re running out of things to do with the belchers and the show could benefit from spending more time with some of the side characters as seen in the Rudy episode.

jacksilver,

I don’t like Ubooquity, but Calibre somehow seems worse.

jacksilver,

Is this BOTW or TOTK, I think you can only land on the dragons in TOTK (the sequel to BOTW).

jacksilver,

Haha, no need to be snarky. Just covering my basis cause you might have seen someone landing on a dragon somewhere online.

jacksilver,

In the industry ML is considered a subset of AI, as are genetic algorithms and other approaches to developing “intelligence”. That’s why people tend to use AGI now to differentiate, because the fields been evolving (not that I agree with the approach either) . Honestly, you show someone even 10/15 years ago what we can do with RL, computer vision, LLMs and they’d certainly call it AI. I think the real problem is a failure to convey what these things actually are, they’re sold to the public under the term AI only to hype up the brand/business.

jacksilver,

I really wanted to like it, but the world felt so empty. While everything looks beautiful you can’t really interact with anything. On top of that the combat didn’t feel right, like you weren’t actually hitting the enemies. The world and setting were really interesting though and it looked great, but just didn’t deliver on the gameplay side in my opinion.

jacksilver,

Yeah, you don’t need a VPN as their is also a relay component that forms a sorta sync thing network. While the data is always encrypted, with the relaying you are using external servers to route the traffic. The relaying also isn’t required, but ensures data can be synced even when a direct connection isn’t possible (e.g. You arent home and aren’t on your VPN).

jacksilver,

I was looking for something similar back at the start of summer and the best I could find at the time was a Microsoft model on hugging face - huggingface.co/microsoft/speecht5_tts. It’s a bit robotic, but its pretty versatile and since it outputs a .wav file it’s easy to integrate it into any system you might be working on/with.

Only thing that’s difficult about it is that you need to understand sampling rates to make sure the voice is created correctly, but I think the example on the hugging face page works as is.
