invalidusernamelol,

I built all the tracking stuff at my job. It’s got a really shiny interface and looks super legit for when the owner walks by, but I bullshit all the numbers on the backend so no one looks bad

(He was gonna implement tracking no matter what, but when I stepped up to build the system it saved him like $1000/month and let us make up our own metrics)

invalidusernamelol,

There are many of them!

invalidusernamelol,

I think it’s someone who does a lot of nitrous oxide at Phish concerts

invalidusernamelol,

Primitive accumulation is a bad term. It works if you’ve read the theory behind it, but otherwise it sounds like someone saving up a bunch of money then starting a successful business compared to what it is which was colonial genocide, enclosure of the commons, and mass starvation as people were ripped from agricultural labor and cast into the factories and mines to work for feudal lords turned industrial capitalists.

invalidusernamelol,

I have yet to actually see a big emote, as the hex bear frontend keeps them small, but this comment out of context is great

invalidusernamelol,

All states are authoritarian. Where do you think all the authority comes from?

A state having authority isn’t always a bad thing though, the current state is really great if you’re a white male property owner!

And those guys won’t be too happy if you take that state away from them, so whatever comes next would need the authority to resist that counter-revolution.

But that’s authoritarian, so we should just let them take back over and keep doing the authoritarianism that supports their interests.

invalidusernamelol,

Socialism: Utopian and Scientific is required reading for any communist

invalidusernamelol,

POTUS -> TUSP (The United States President)

CIA -> CAI (Central Agency of Intelligence)

FBI -> BFI (Bureau of Federal Investigation)

It’s fun to just change around acronyms for official governing bodies. I’m gonna go edit Wikipedia to include these as common abbreviations too

invalidusernamelol,

The conversation was you linking a Wikipedia article, I was at least hoping you’d link like a book or something. Like we could have a discussion if you were trying to argue against authoritarianiam as defined by say Bakunin or some other anarchist thinker.

Then I could respond with On Authority which argues that authority is a natural consequence of any organization and calling something authoritarian just means you’re saying that it’s a system that is able to successfully reproduce itself.

You could also try to link “authoritarianism” to fascism, but again that is pointless because there’s already a term for fascism, which is Fascism.

invalidusernamelol,

I was just summarizing for the people who are too lazy to go read anything and will just stop here

invalidusernamelol,

I love it, that’s insane

This is how it’s supposed to look

  • invalidusernamelol,

Your distinction really has no meaning when there are places in China where people can be openly LGBTQ same as America with the US being more actively hostile to people in most places.

I’m fine with the use of the term authoritarian if it has actual meaning, but the way it’s used here it’s totally context less unless you just assume whoever is saying it is saying it as a stand in for “not a Western liberal democracy”.

A thing which actually cheapens a term which was meant primarily to refer to fascist dictatorships and feudal dictatorships.

    invalidusernamelol,

I’m so glad Hexbear exists and we have a zero tolerance policy for vaushite pedophiles.

    invalidusernamelol,

more specifically I consider the USA (varying by state and location) to be pretty authoritarian in a lot of ways, though they have decent press freedom (even if there are pretty severe issues with copyright and larger media conglomerates being owned by investment corpos), which is kind of an anomaly given many other things like drug laws and police militarisation and such :/ (many other things too)

Damn, you’re like 90% of the way there, but you still only see the trees.

US has no freedom of the press because all media is privately owned and even state media is privately financed. The entire 4th estate is literally just an appendage of the ruling class. Freedom of the press isn’t private ownership of the press, it’s independence and democratic oversight over the press, something that exists in no capacity in America.

In the US you have freedom to purchase the press

    invalidusernamelol,

This is not the same as jailing “unapproved” journalists. The point is you can start your own paper/report/etc. without central approval of what you can and can’t produce.

Seriously, are you just going to ignore the history of the US jailing or straight up killing dissident journalists?

Snowden, Manning, and Assange are still going on.

Gary Webb was assassinated in recent memory along with dozens of other journalists covering protests and corruption.

The US actively supports Saudi Arabia that liquidated journalists like no other country.

During the bombing of Yugoslavia the US killed hundreds of Yougoslavian journalists when they openly targeted the offices of newspapers and television stations.

The price of starting a paper in the US is also absolutely prohibitive. With the primary mode of funding being advertisment. A funding vector that is just pure open conflict of interest.

And sure you can start your own, but how long until the local sheriff decides you’re not worth keeping alive and just kills you because you’re exposing their corruption?

really the thing I value is information freedom and transparency, press freedom and universal access to an open and anonymous internet are means to that end.

I can understand that, but an open and anonymous Internet does not exist and never will, that’s the whole reason Snowden is in exile, he revealed that and they don’t like the story. We also don’t have universal access to the Internet as ISPs are all privately owned and you need to pony up a rent to use it.

And if you really value freedom and transparency, the US is in fact the opposite. I focused mainly on recent instances of journalist suppression in just the US, but the Yougoslavian instance isn’t uncommon. The US will target media offices in countries it attacks. The first goal is to cut off the flow of information, and not replace it with “free press and truth”, but American propaganda.

    invalidusernamelol,

    Just basic slurs apparently.

You know, the really important part of free speech.
