idiomaddict,

This story is sad, those are sadder.

idiomaddict,

Honestly though, why was he there? So many nicer hotels that an oil exec can afford

idiomaddict, (edited )

That’s just tactics. The best time to attack is when everyone sleeps outside. It’s gruesome, but the holiday itself may not be relevant, just the celebration of it.

idiomaddict,

Only according to my receipt after the self checkout

idiomaddict,

I need you to explain that one. Specific zeros? Aren’t they all just equal to zero?

idiomaddict,

C’mon, OP, closed mouths don’t get fed

idiomaddict,

There’s literally a pheromone in womens tears that dampens arousal in men. Even if you’re not there to smell it, the body still responds to a degree. That’s not to say that no men can maintain an erection through a woman crying for any reason, but empathy does not drop for “most men” when they’re aroused.

idiomaddict,

Well, women are way more likely to sleep with you again and not shit talk you to their friends if you don’t ignore their discomfort during sex.

idiomaddict,

The cost of a boat is primarily in upkeep, not price. You’ll see.

idiomaddict,

It’s because it’s the advice to say when someone has deeply offended you, but you need to stay polite. It’s just really hard for humans to actually say, because it’s awkward as hell

idiomaddict,

Honestly, that’s probably how you’re preparing it or a personal quirk. Over a billion people eat it regularly, it’s probably in a huge number of peoples favorite meals, it absolutely can be prepared so that most people enjoy it well enough to eat regularly without going nuts

idiomaddict,

I have preferences and preferring one over any other doesn’t mean I’m making the others wrong.

Absolutely not, it could be a personal quirk. I have literally over a hundred recipes for zucchini, and I’ve won multiple awards for one of my zucchini dishes. Zucchini is always going to be meh at best for me, because it’s a personal preference. Maybe tofu is like that for you, but it’s not true for everyone.

I tried tofu for the first time as a teenager and didn’t eat it regularly until my 20s. It’s now in several of my favorite things to eat. However, it can be finicky, and I don’t always like how others prepare it. I’m obviously also not representative of every person, but it’s not an impossible thing to learn to like or even rare for adult vegetarians/vegans to develop a serious taste for.

idiomaddict, (edited )

Well yeah, you should also add fat and spices to tofu. You wouldn’t eat just plain cooked noodles, but that’s not because they’re bad.

Edit: Also, if you want to like it, can I ask what kind you got? Texture is key and there’s lots of different consistencies. I tend to like the two extremes: silken tofu and smoked tofu. The silken makes sauces so incredibly creamy, but you have to spice it carefully. The smoked tofu brand I’ve been into lately, on the other hand, is so dense, it works well as a tougher protein cut and holds up well to stewing. I basically only need to salt it.

You might not like it as much as you like other things, it’s still a matter of preference. It just can be enjoyable for most people. I don’t always use it like a meat, and I think that makes a difference.

idiomaddict,

That’s fine, but you recognize that insects aren’t an inherently “bad” food source, right? They’re not even fundamentally different from shellfish.

I don’t want to eat insects either, but I also don’t want to eat chicken wings (probably for the same reason most people don’t want to eat insects, I’m squeamish). I don’t believe that chicken wings are objectively a bad food, though. They’re obviously not, because so many people love them.

idiomaddict,

Perfectly understandable. I just get annoyed when people act like tofu is inherently bad or must taste shitty.

idiomaddict,

You can get digestible iron from cooking with a rusted surface in your process

“2.3 times the size of a dinosaur“

I assume they mean the hummingbird subtype

idiomaddict,

Most consent laws used to be written so that marriage would be an exception. Whether Oklahomas have or not is a toss up, but given that they didn’t add a lower limit on marriage age, I’d guess they haven’t updated many of those laws in a while.

idiomaddict,

Cold, but I respect it. We’re not friends either.

idiomaddict,

Can we stop at “banana and prawn sweets”?

idiomaddict,

That’s physical custody, legal custody is: 19%, 3%, and 45%

idiomaddict,

How does he know it’s not true? The copy is supposed to remember it

idiomaddict,

To be fair, all you’d have to do is snap your fingers or dab after the conversation and you could tell that it fake. To tell it it’s real, you need a code word, for example: “alley-oop.” If you travel back to your past self, if someone needs to prove they’re in a time loop, or here. If you respond with “alley-oop,” you know it’s fake. If you don’t, you know it was real (as long as you now choose a random word that you swear to use in uncertain circumstances)

idiomaddict,

There’s a German word, schnabulieren, which, though it has a totally different meaning, occupies the same niche as “to dis’ someone.” If you had to guess when they were from, you’d think the eighties, but it was actually the 15th century. “Schnabul-” comes from “Schnabel,” meaning “beak,” though in this case it’s more like “duckbill”, and basically “izate,” as a suffix. It means to snack, but really it’s more to snarf something. It was invented as a joke, to mix Latin and Germanic roots was considered funny at the time.

idiomaddict,

Those issues are much harder to solve and play a much greater role in “hard addictions” than chemical dependency does.

idiomaddict,

That’s like saying caffeine or aspirin is a gateway drug because you probably try those before harder drugs. That’s not the only qualification for a gateway drug: it has to significantly increase the likelihood of trying additional drugs, which marijuana in the US does not. Elsewhere it varies, but in the US, you’re not more likely to try heroin because you’ve tried marijuana.

idiomaddict,

Everyone knows when a journalist dies, we should look first at the unhoused population.

idiomaddict,

Sorry you don’t like it.

I have been homeless twice, but didn’t really feel it because I was able to get a hotel room and/or able to sleep at my workplace after work. I was working ~80 hours/week, so I was pretty insulated from feeling it, but it took years to realize that I was homeless (I don’t know, I grew up middle class and assumed it couldn’t be me?).

It wasn’t until someone used the term unhoused, that I mentioned how my old boss used to let me and my ex sleep in the bar as long as we were gone by 11, then I realized that it had been me twice.

Homeless technically refers to anyone without a home, but a lot of people who believe they are temporarily between homes would not identify as homeless (not even just out of classism, but not wanting to take resources from people who need them more, etc.). Unhoused tends to get a more complete response

idiomaddict,

Well I’m the one who used it and I’ve been homeless twice, so I’m glad that falls under acceptable use for you.

It’s a survey term that gets better responses, not a whitewashing or emotionally insulated term.

idiomaddict,

I don’t know both sides to this debate. Do you disagree? If so, what do you think? Tbh it sounds pretty reasonable to focus on rehabilitation instead of punishment, is the difference mainly focused on terminology differences?

idiomaddict,

So in your mind, we punish a criminal mostly/exclusively for the benefit of other citizens who might then decide not to commit crimes? What do you think about the criminal themselves?

The only reason there is a discussion is because of people who would routinely get taken advantage of by the criminals they advocate for.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. The only reason there’s a discussion about the purpose of criminal punishment?

idiomaddict,

Is it not (10*10^100)?

idiomaddict,

But isn’t that googolplex? If it’s not, I’m so sorry lol

idiomaddict,

Sorry, I read it initially as googol

idiomaddict,

Only if you want them to fit. I saw no requirement for that in the memo

idiomaddict,

If you do that on the night before thanksgiving, it’ll just make me happy

idiomaddict,

Lentils and rice are so easy and so much better on the stove. I get it if it’s too much hassle, but you’re already going to so much trouble. I tend to cook for a few meals at once, so I’ll do a cup of rice, two chopped up carrots, vegetable bouillon, and all the necessary water, then after that’s cooked for ten minutes, I’ll add the lentils, and cook until they’re done. Check cook times to get the timing right.

The carrot is there because it makes an enormous difference for lentils- lentils need carrots like pasta needs salt.

idiomaddict,

You’re allowed to believe whatever you like. I’ve been an atheist since I realized the other kids believed in Noah, but let people keep whatever tiny thing gives them comfort, especially if they do it while expanding the church to accept anyone.

idiomaddict,

Why are you so against a minimum wage when people keep telling you why it’s important?

idiomaddict,

But the workers don’t currently have either- lowering or removing the minimum wage might reduce the unemployment rate, but those jobs are not going to be paid at a livable rate. Currently more theft is wage theft committed by companies against workers, they’re already using the power they have against workers. There’s already a clear divide between union and nonunion blue collar benefits and wages: if there were a textbook play of economic principles, all nonunion blue collar employees would quit and join union companies or form their own.

idiomaddict,

Let the people decide what a livable wage is. A bad job is better than no job. They can still refuse to work.

The people have a gun to their head. If they’re not eligible for unemployment because a $3/hour job is available, they’ll take it not to starve to death. That doesn’t make it a free or advantageous choice.

idiomaddict,

This one is very far from California :)
