hedgehog,

Brave actually doesn’t take all of Chromium’s new code. They write patches that modify what gets brought in or used, which allows them to avoid bringing in changes they don’t like.

I don’t know how extensive Brave’s changes are, but it would definitely be easy for them to add their own ad blocker. On the other hand, changes like re-enabling the entire APIs that were taken away from extensions would likely be out of scope.

It’s an interesting process but I’d personally rather just use Firefox

hedgehog,

I can do this as I’m drinking something - one gulp is roughly one ounce. Was especially handy with water fountains when tracking my hydration, but that hasn’t been relevant since 2019.

hedgehog,

It’s generally understood that sharing child sex abuse materials, regardless of intent, is not only a federal crime in the U.S. and Australia, but re-victimizes the child.

Excuse my ignorance, but why wasn’t this guy arrested? And why is it “news” that X restored his account but an arrest - or even lack of one - wasn’t even mentioned?

hedgehog,

I got the 12 Pro and 12 Mini (for work) about three years ago. The 12 Mini is holding up fine, though the battery would be lacking if it were my personal phone. My partner still uses an iPhone XR, which is nearly 5 years old, and I’ve never heard her complain about it being too slow or unable to run an app that she wanted to use. And the XR was basically the “non-Pro” version of its generation.

Resale value wise, the 12 Pro of the same storage capacity is selling for roughly $100 more than the comparable 12 on eBay ($500 vs $400), but a 64 GB iPhone 12 is another $70 or so cheaper. (I was going to warn you away from getting a 64 GB phone, but it looks like the entry level storage is now 128 GB, which sounds like it would be enough for you.)

The max Apple trade-in values’ difference is even lower - $30 apart ($300 and $330).

So if you’re reselling, you’ll likely be able to recoup $100 of the $200 price difference in three years.

If the Pro-only upgrades (for the 14 vs 14 Pro this was an improved camera + zoom lens, higher refresh rate screen, ~10% faster CPU/GPU, and higher peak brightness in HDR) don’t have that much value to you, then it should be an easy decision to pass on the 15 Pro and pick up the 15 instead.

hedgehog,

Yes, E2EE video call software exists, but then you’d be using something other than Zoom.

Theoretically you could have everyone in a call use a plugin that “added” E2EE to Zoom, but I’m not certain such a plugin exists - and even if it did, ensuring everyone you communicate with Zoom uses it would be enough of a barrier that it’d be simpler to just use something other than Zoom that has E2EE baked in.

what messaging app do you use?

So here’s the thing, every time I try to move away from Facebook messenger I run into the same problem, nobody else in my friends or family actually want to use a secure, private messenger app like signal or telegram, my wife, my parents, my in-laws, my friends they’re ALL on Facebook and they will never take signal...

hedgehog,

I think it was like that years ago. Or at least, it felt like it and if I recall correctly the Signal Protocol docs describe the functionality in that manner.

hedgehog,

Presumably because they want a higher degree of privacy / urgency when talking about their plans or the intimate details of their lives, sharing selfies or pics of the kids, fighting, flirting / sexting, and when sharing nudes, but OP doesn’t care about that higher degree of privacy for their friends who they don’t discuss those things with.

And the reason to have a separate app for work safe conversations only with her makes sense since it allows conversations to be nsfw without any extra worry (e.g., will I accidentally open this later when not at work? What if I think you’re off work already but you had to stay late to have a conversation with your boss?) or hassle.

And only having one app for everything else could be because he doesn’t have nsfw conversations there and thus can safely check them at work or because he doesn’t have important conversations there and thus doesn’t need to check them while at work. Or both.

hedgehog,

If you upload an illegal copy of a book and I download it, not realizing or caring that it’s pirated, and then I re-upload it elsewhere, you and I have both committed copyright infringement. This feels like the same thing.

I suspect the case will depend largely on whether the ways that the models were trained using her works qualify as fair use.

hedgehog,

If you use that illegal copy to create a work, then your copy infringes copyright (unless it falls under fair use). LLMs don’t count as people in any legal sense, and training them doesn’t have a legal status comparable to a real person reading books.

hedgehog,

Along that line of thought, you could do

  • “text editor” (meaning Notepad, Nano, etc) on the left,
  • IDE in the center,
  • and “text editor” (meaning Vim, Emacs, VSCode, Sublime, etc.) on the right
