Stay on top of changing your fluids. Oil changes are a lot cheaper than a new engine (plus labor) or any other big component of your car, like transmission or radiator. Change your engine oil (about every 5K miles), transmission fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid (every 3-6 years), diff fluid (if you have a differential), transfer case fluid (if you have a transfer case), and power steering fluid (if it’s hydraulic based)

If you live in a salty area (i.e. a place that snows a lot), learn how to apply Fluid Film or any oil-based thin film for rust prevention under your car. It’ll keep the car going for a lot longer and fluid film is a lot cheaper than a new sub frame or structural component of your car

Service manuals from the manufacturers are available for subscription, but if you know where to find them, I’d be curious to see, because my search engine skills have gotten worse as time has progressed. I think Toyota and Honda sells their subscription for 2 days of access for $20 and you should be able to download the relevant PDFs you want

As for appearances for you car, don’t eat or really keep anything in your car, unless it is for the car and its emergency kit. So I try to take everything out of the car with me if my car doesn’t need it like clothes, groceries, or anything like that. This makes car break-ins less likely to occur, and if it does, it’s more of a bad day or two (depending on your skillset/money you have) instead of a gut-wrenching moment when you realize they stole a sentimental valuable. Don’t park under trees to avoid leaves or tree sap. Neither under power lines because of bird poo

Remember that cars are depreciating tools to get you from point A to point B. The most important part of it is that it’s mechanically sound and the safety features for it work. The next part is that it blows cold AC and hot air for heat. Anything beyond that is a bonus

Personally, I find American candy way too sweet. As in one full-sized bar of any chocolate candy is disgustingly sweet, and makes me feel unwell if I get anywhere close to finishing a bar

I am American btw, and I grew up eating this stuff for a few weeks after Halloween, but then my tastebuds developed and my answer to that question is to “just eat a couple of pieces a day”

If you want an actual answer, I’d consider trying to remove willpower from the equation and donate or throw away a majority of the candy you have. If you still want to keep candy, then putting it in inconvenient places might make it easier to eat less. Think like keeping it on the opposite side of your residence where you would usually lounge/mindlessly snack and only eating it in a designated area.

You can also try to buy one of those kSafes to prevent yourself from eating it all too. The idea isn’t to depend on your current willpower to decide for you, but rather the rational thought of your past self to allot yourself a certain amount.

It’s like a cheat day, if you designate a day where you can pig out, it’s easier to maintain a well-balanced diet outside of the chest day

I had to go re-check my settings and saw that a lot of my “mark posts as read” options were unticked

For me there doesn’t seem to be an icon anymore, but instead the titles get a little bit darker. I also don’t have a button that lets me hide read posts either, but it might be because a setting got reset

It also seems like the devs introduced a bunch of regressions with the latest big update and have been quietly adding back in features. Things like instance/content filters, multiple accounts, and read settings were quietly added back in

You’ll probably need to provide more details about the premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums of PPO vs HDHP, projected healthcare costs (at least your current year costs so far), and how much you are able to stomach for the cost now vs later

PPO might be better if you can stomach the premiums and hit your deductible early enough. HDHP might be better if you can stomach the higher deductible and reimburse yourself years down the line after your HSA has had some time to be invested and grow from its investments

It’s hard to say without concrete numbers and only going based off thoughts and feelings

He’s recently released a video where he admits that he has had a “home base” for a few months (probably around 6 months at this point). For good reason too, basically his support network needed to be able to reliably plan to meet him at one place. It’s not like he’s renting an apartment to sleep in every night, but rather he’s using it as a place in between long trips where he can rest and his network can stop by and visit

Granted, he hasn’t had a home base for like years (2020/2021ish). Still, he has a cool channel and gives a more normal vibe than other vanlifers

And personally I wouldn’t want you to go on the sidewalk. I’d rather you stay the course and let me pass as it is a bit more predictable that way

Devs from a city builder game (SimCity or Cities: Skyline) tried to replicate the scale of buildings/lots in real life, but then they realized that a small percentage of the lot is the actual building and it’s mostly parking lots.

There is a study out there that says controlling for weight, the shape of the vehicle is another significant factor for the likelihood of survivability of being ran over. Cars have a lower bumper and this allows for adults to roll on to the hood, children also have a higher chance of the same (but not much). SUVs, crossovers, and trucks have higher bumpers which gives them bigger blind spots and when hitting an adult, it’s extremely likely, that the victim is seeing the underside of the vehicle.

Taking a step back, vehicles have become heavier at a faster rate and this means that a new car today vs a 2000 car of the same model, going the same speed, the new car will deal much, much more damage due to physics. There’s just more mass.

It’s not even limited to hitting children (because we don’t think of the the children inside or outside of the car), it also affects the roads, parking garage, and bridges that cars use. Heavy vehicles do more damage to the infrastructure than lighter vehicles. EVs are almost always leaving out the fact that they are heavier, and will cause more damage to the road (and children).

In a perfect world, vehicle registration would be based on usage of the road, but that is difficult to come up with a way to enforce that. I think the next best thing would be to have an exponential/progressive registration fee based on weight. If you purchased a heavier vehicle, you are now responsible for contributing even more money to the roads due to your ludicrous destruction of it.

If I remember correctly, a lot of oxygen comes from algae, and this is due to photosynthesis. There are startups out there trying to do CO2 capture with algae

I think there is only so much 1 person can do to offset the emissions for billions of people (really 100s of companies). One of the more important things you can do at a larger scale is to contribute to movements and vote

LK-99 is a room temperature superconductor. It’s a big deal, because it means that energy can be transferred with 0 loss and it doesn’t require loads of cooling to maintain that property (unlike “traditional superconductors” that need liquid nitrogen and other cooling to have that property). An analogy would be like if you got paid all of your paycheck all the time instead of having taxes taken out. The money you get paid is energy and the loss is taxes

Going over to the programming side, sometimes you’ll work on a feature and when others go test it, it doesn’t work. A common excuse heard is “well, it works on my machine”. Docker containers solve that problem by essentially (but not really) making a copy of “my machine” and letting people run the program/feature on that copy

So the joke is, if the korean researchers were able to create it in their lab environment (their machine), why don’t they just make a copy of their lab and let others use it

It would probably be Cane’s, because I eat there a fair amount and it’s like B-tier fried chicken for an okay price. If we wanna go international, then it’s Kyochon. It’s a Korean Fried Chicken chain with 1 location in America and a bunch in Korea

Second would either be McDonalds or Dairy Queen for their McFlurry/blizzard or their super artificial ice cream. Honestly, I know there is better ice cream, but I have an Anton Ego flashback (from Ratatouille) whenever I take a bite/lick of ice cream and am reminded of the trips I took with my mom when we walked over to Dairy Queen together

So, just finished reading an article on WaPo about fireflies/lightening bugs and got me thinking further... Car headlights suck. They mess up our night vision when we pass another dickhead running white/blue lights. We mess up the habit(at) of many animals/bugs. So why not red lights? My hiking/camping headlamp has a red light...

Yes, those lights you are talking about are illegal. Same with vehicles that have too high of bumper heights and too low. Unfortunately, a lot of traffic laws don’t get enforced

My job incorrectly thinks I'm Native American, should I tell them?

I don’t want to dox myself, but I’ve been at my job for 5+ years. I guess either my boss or I fat fingered something while I was on boarding, cuz just now I was going over some paperwork and… As far as my job is concerned I’m Native American. I am very much white. Nobody ever brought it up....

I believe it’s a legal thing where HR has to track the ethnicity (if applicant discloses) due to equal employment. Basically the US federal government wants to know if a company is discriminating against a protected class during hiring and employment

People who give others what they wish they had. Sometimes people can be bitter and envious of what others got. I think it takes being a bigger person to accept that you didn’t receive it then, and you can still give it to others.

I’m mostly talking about things like time, attention, patience, tolerance, affection, and positive reinforcement/affirmation. Just because you had a bad time, doesn’t mean others have to experience it.

If this water park is “across the street” (freeway) from an amusement park I think I know what you’re talking about. If not, then my answer is the same. Water park that my family went to and it closed in 2020. I miss not having worries and playing in the water. And also how Dippin dots was the ice cream of the future (for decades now)

I mostly think that any large container that can hold water is a cold brew maker. I used to use one of those large pitchers from the supermarket used for serving lemonade (really any sweet drink), but really any large container you have will work that you don’t mind having coffee leech in to.

Because all you really need is water and coffee grounds mixed together inside of something sitting anywhere for a long enough time. Nowadays I use a half gallon mason jar left sitting on my counter for 12-18 hours and then I filter

When I go filter, I filter out the bulk of the grounds using just a strainer. Then I use 2-3 coffee filter lined strainers over whatever bowls I have and let it drain

Or get a Toddy, they were recommended as well when I looked into cold brew
