Google provides tremendous utility to the world essentially for free; its search engine, maps, mail client apps, browser, etc. are tools billions of people use every day. How do they maintain a global network of data centers and localize their products to hundreds of languages…none of that is free.

That applies to personal private information too.

And that’s where you and I disagree. Just like there’s a difference between public and private property, there’s a difference between public and private information.

Do you think it would be understandable/alright to be discriminatory towards people who identify with a world culture if that culture ended up declaring nuclear war and going through with the threats?

It’s no secret I’m on the misanthropy spectrum, but as such a person you could say that about, I wanted to ask this ever since hearing this conveyed in response to recent events which sees three spheres of influence now arguably possessing the potential to deliver on such promises. Like… what’s the deal?

frauddogg, (edited )
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I mean, I’m already discriminatory against anyone who espouses colonialist/settler rhetoric, so that just seems like a logical next step to me. I can’t have settlers in my zone; that’s the quickest way for my zone to not be mine anymore lmao

Your best bet is just making a new account and integrating better. We don’t do that ‘chemtrail’ shit.

If you’re actually based and comradely; and that chemtrail shit was just a badly-thought-out bit, then… That should be the end of it, and no one would ever know. If “right-conspiratorial” is how you actually are, it’ll be sussed out and handled.

If you have to genuinely ask what’s blackface and what isn’t, I strongly doubt your bonafides as to “good faith”. Fedditor talm bout “growth”, that’s funnier than a fuck in a clown car

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

How bout we stay where the fuck we’re at, fix the planet we fucked up, and stop colonizing new places?

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

As to fixing our own planet? Why the fuck do you think we can’t also work on that? There are billions of humans, we can surely multitask. Especially since actually living on the moon or Mars or whatnot will be a monumentally hard task in and of itself.

Then where are those efforts? When will the fossil fuel companies be shuttered, and their CEOs executed for crimes against nature and humanity? When can we trust the leaders of the most powerful nations on Earth to actually start trying to restrain the runaway global temperature increases? We just sailed straight past 2C globally; a full 25 years ahead of schedule.

If we can multitask, I’m sure as fuckin shit not seeing it; and it’s either naiveté you’re speaking from, or downright IFLS-type, bazinga-flavored malice. I don’t care about questions we haven’t asked about space yet.

I care about "how are we going to not fucking die here for the profit of some gaggle of fossil-sucking sociopaths".

Anyone who actually wants power should not be trusted, with it, or in general

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Do you believe that humans intrinsically lust for power as an essentialist point?

EDIT: for a dropped ‘m’

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

See, I think that’s where we disagree-- because I don’t see it as an intrinsic codified that far back. If anything, I think that’s just part and parcel of being socialized under the dictatorship of capital; where we’re literally raised to prioritize competition against our peers, and more importantly, winning that competition. I only see ‘power’ as the means to the end of accomplishing the objectives we were socialized to chase from birth.

tl;dr change the society, change the socialization, eradicate the common, but not all-encompassing desire for power over another.

You must pick a point in human history before the 1950s to be spend the rest of your life in. What era and place would you choose?

You would still have the same age, gender, personality, skin color, etc. and you would be able to speak at least one local language and would know basic information of the era and place. Your family, social standing, and such would be randomly picked.

frauddogg,

And still wound up eventually becoming a slave-dealing civilization at the same time as they were being “Christianized”-- a fancy term for ‘colonization’. That’s a no-go for me.

frauddogg, (edited )
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Well, after like 800 AD, that’s kind of the case. There is no ‘proud’ or even ‘peaceful’ existence in a world with Anglos getting ready to pillage and pervert it all. And that’s just taking my melanin into account-- that doesn’t take my mental state into account, and doesn’t take my sexuality into account either. There is no time in the past I look to favorably, and honestly? Until we’ve handled the capital-worshipper colonizer menace in this era, I don’t see a time in the future to look favorably to either.

Are you done debate perv’ing at me yet, or do I have to find a more scathing way to phrase it?

frauddogg, (edited )
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I’m a little bit incapable of “friendliness” regarding people smugging at me on some redditor headassery like “nooooooo, there’s good points of history” like they’re not ancient history (when y’all get to play these ‘lul december 1 1949’ games) far and away from here or won’t all get ruined by usually the same people from 800 AD/CE/whatever measure you care about onwards. It starts sounding like all you care about doing is talking over people in absolutely shit faith.

Comrade Usagi really is a strong fuckin energy

masimatutu, to fediverse en-gb

Mastodon has the responsibility to promote diversity in the Fediverse

I love the Threadiverse. Compared to the microblogging Fediverse’s sea of random thoughts, Lemmy and kbin are so much easier to navigate with the options to sort posts by subscribed, from local instances or everything federated. You can also sort by individual community, and then there are the countless ways to order the posts and comments (which are stored neatly under the main post, by the way). That people can more easily find the right discussions and see where they can contribute also means that the discussions tend to be more focused and productive than elsewhere. Decentralisation also makes a lot of sense, since it is built around different communities. All that’s needed is users.

Things were going quite well for a while when Reddit killed third-party apps, prompting many to leave and find the Threadiverse. However, it is quite difficult to entertain a crowd that has grown accustomed to a constant bombardment of dopamine-inducing or interesting content by tens of millions of users, if you only have a couple hundred thousand people. This is causing some to leave, which of course increases this effect. The active users have more than halved since July, according to FediDB. The mood is also becoming more tense. Maybe the lack of engagement drives some to cause it through hostility, I’m not quite sure. Either way, the Threadiverse becoming a less enjoyable place to be, which is quite sad considering how promising it is.

But what is really frustrating is that we could easily have that userbase. The entire Fediverse has over ten million users, and many Mastodonians clearly want to engage in group-based discussion, looking at Guppe groups. The focused discussions should also be quite attractive. Technically we are federated, so why do Mastodonians interact so little with the Threadiverse? The main reason is that Mastodon simply doesn’t federate post content. I really can’t see why the platform that federates entire Wordpress blogs refuses to federate thread content just because it has a title, and instead just replaces the body with a link to the post. Very unhelpful.

The same goes with PeerTube. There are plenty of videos on there that I am quite sure a lot of Mastodonians would appreciate, yet both views and likes there stay consistently in the tens. Yes, Mastodon’s web interface has a local video player, but in most clients it is the same link shenanigans, may may partly explain the small amount of engagement. This is also quite sad, because Google’s YouTube is one of the worst social network monopolies out there, if not the worst.

And I know some might say that Mastodon is a microblogging platform and that it makes sense only to have microblogging content, but the problem is that Mastodon is the dominant platform on the Fediverse, its users making up close to 80% of all Fedizens. It has gone so far that several Friendica and Hubzilla users have been complaining about complaints from Mastodonians that their posts do not live up to Mastodon customs, and of course, that people frequently use “Mastodon” to refer to the entire Fediverse. This, of course, goes entirely against the idea of the Fediverse, that many diverse platforms live in harmony with and awareness of each other.

The very least that Mastodon could do is to support the content of other platforms. Then I’d wish that they’d improve discoverability, by for instance adding a videos tab in the explore section, improving federation of favourites since it is the dominant sorting mechanism on many other platforms, and making a clear distinction between people (@person) and groups (!group), but I know that that is quite much to ask.

P.S. @feditips , @FediFollows , I know that you are reluctant to promote Lemmy and its communities because of the ideology of its founders, but the fact is firstly that it’s open source and there aren't any individual people who control the entire project, and that the software itself is very apolitical. In fact, most Lemmy users both oppose and are on instances that have rules against such beliefs, so I highly encourage you to at least help raise awareness on the communities. Then, of course, there’s kbin, which isn’t associated with any extremism at all. As a bonus, it has much better integration with the microblogging Fediverse, but it is a lot smaller and younger, and still very much under development.

Anyways, that was a ramble. Thanks for hearing me out.

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

“Threadiverse”? Gross. I thought we were inherently defedding that corpo ‘Threads’ cruft.

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Even if it was, the sheer existence of Meta in the federation space necessitates the changing of the collective name to prevent mixups specifically like this from happening

(also to spite Fuckerberg bc if that name was around before Meta came to the space, it can be assumed based off the Law of Techbro Vultures that Fuckerberg picked that name specifically to cause that kind of muddying)

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Oh, I’m even harder to pull. I know I’ve had a couple friends try to jump me into other settings this way, but if I can’t convert my legacy Pathfinder characters into the setting you’re trying to get into without having to sand parts off and sacrifice parts of the vision, it’s a lot harder to get me to consider it more than that one time-- which is ironically, a lot of the reason I don’t gel with 5e. Not enough splats for me to run my aged concepts as envisioned without having to make ill-fitting changes, or figure out how to convert a non-core Pathfinder class to 5e.

@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

“After this, I’m retiring”

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Wasn’t Kobold Press making 3pc for Pathfinder a while back? I’d swear I’ve heard of that company before

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Well, one way or the other, more entities in the system development space is only a good thing. Praying that someone makes a system that feels as good to build detailed, unique character concepts in as Pathfinder with a slashdown on the amounts of bookkeeping required so people quit being intimidated by what used to be my favorite system.

Ever since my last Pathfinder group fell in on itself, the circle I run with now absolutely won’t go near it-- say they’d rather stay on 5e because Pathfinder ‘needs too much notetaking’ and I’m just here like “oh you DEF haven’t played Shadowrun before if you think PF’s bad about the bookkeeping”

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

“We’ve entered a quiet period”, what in the Tallarico

What opened your eyes to what's happening in Palestine?

We’re a group of activists in a Western country where most have been brought up with either “Israel = good, Hamas = bad” or “It’s a sad, but unsolvable conflict between two equal sides”. The media heavily skewed to the Israeli perspective, and our politicians want to condemn protests in support of Palestinians....

frauddogg, (edited )
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

The minute it kicked back off. I’ve always considered Israel to be a standard-bearer of settler-colonialism-- it’s why I wasn’t able to listen to Borgore after a while-- but I never critically investigated why Hamas needed to exist until I stopped and started comparing how similar Palestine’s plight is to what my community has already been through.

Our neighborhoods bombed. Our fathers murdered in the street. Our children funneled from school to prison. The only reason Amerika doesn’t look like Israel, doesn’t take casualties like Israel, doesn’t fight an armed resistance like Israel, is because Amerika either imprisoned, murdered, or both regarding anyone who could have stepped up to lead an armed resistance in my community. The minute that all clicked for me, I couldn’t even think about condemning any part of the Palestinian joint coalition; ESPECIALLY not Hamas. Shit, Black and Indigenous folk need a Hamas at this point.

frauddogg,
@frauddogg@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Americans do not want to think about the prospect of Hamas being a response rather than an an origin stimulus-- because it reminds them of what they had to do to prevent response in this country, and what they may have to attempt again in coming days

Sitting on the fence is siding with the oppressor; as the settlers taught me when I was little! Wonder why that’s suddenly not the case anymore when it’s Zionist colonizers getting pushed in.

See, that was a crackerish statement; and I don’t ‘debate’ settlers-- I condemn them. You sound like one of these kind of gays; please quit the bad-faith crybully phobia-jacketing bullshit

As several scholars have noted, contemporary gay life is marked by high levels of racism directed towards gay men of color by gay white men, with much of the racism manifesting itself as negative sexual attitudes towards, and sexual exclusion or fetishization of, non-white men (Armstrong 2002; Bérubé 2001; Epstein 1996; McBride 2005; Tenunis, 2007).
