fat_stig,

As a boomer, I don’t recall my parents teaching me anything about prejudice, the same at school. The only guidance on prejudice came from my religious education (I’m RC by birth) and to be honest it was completely the opposite to this sentiment. We were taught, for example, that Protestants were evil and that we should never befriend them or trust them.

I stopped going to church when I was about 11, it no longer felt relevant and the teachings were against my own personal beliefs. I had grown up with friends who were of different faiths, Jewish, Protestant, Muslim as well as Catholic, and didn’t consider them to be anything other than buddies.

Some religious teachings have value, but by promoting prejudice as well, the impact is diminished. The only times I have been in church since I was 11 were for weddings and funerals.

fat_stig,

Bob is my Starbucks name, they always get my real name wrong.

fat_stig,

I have 2 piholes on my network, mostly useless they might be but both block over 20% of the traffic, ublock origin and Firefox take care of the rest. Are you sure you set it up correctly?

fat_stig,

Or a friend shared paid content?

fat_stig,

The internet access on my network is much more varied, 12 clients including work laptops, an HTPC, Unraid server, smart TV, phones, watches, tablets, games console, VR headset. Several of these use VPNs so bypass the piholes, I used to see up to 45% a few years ago, but I see no reason to switch them off just because other systems are taking up the slack. Seriously, I can’t remember the last time I saw an ad.

Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank - ‘You won’t need a bank account... it would blow my mind if we don’t have that rolled out by the end of next year.’ (www.theverge.com)

“If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...

fat_stig,

I use Pi-Hole + uBlock origin, there is nothing FB can do to make me read this shit.

I keep an account there to catch up with relatives in other countries, nothing else gets on my feed.

fat_stig,

Mine was removed by Corporate IT, along with a bunch of other open source stuff that made my life bearable.

Also I spent 5 months with our cyber security guys to try and provide a simple file replication server for my team working in a remote office with shit internet connectivity. I gave up, the spooks put up a solid defense, push all the onerous IT security compliance checking onto my desk instead of taking control.

Not as bad as my previous company though, outsourced IT support to ATOS was a nightmare.

fat_stig,

After mine was disabled, I found that if I run videos of old meetings or training onscreen, it keeps the system alive…

Works nicely when I’m WFH.

Everybody is supporting Firefox, but no one wants to use it. Because it is destroying itself. (discuss.tchncs.de)

Mozilla’s stable browser is not stable enough. especially the Android-based one. They are destroying that amazing browser with every single update. Mozilla converted Firefox from a great-promising browser to a crappy, useless browser. Don’t you think so?

fat_stig,

Dude, who is paying you to post this blatant misinformation?

Kitchens need to be kept under negative not positive pressure, typical make up air units supply 85% of the airflow of the exhaust. Source, I used to design HVAC systems and have done multiple McDonald’s restaurants.

    10k calls per day…

More than 1 every 10 minutes. Seems legit.

Do you have a number that’s 1 digit away from Dominos Pizza or something?

    fat_stig,

    @sheogorath can you confirm?

    Control Panel for Twitter users:

    What’s a “For you Feed?”

    fat_stig,

Oh wow, I hate it so much. Look down at the screen, aim for a button or piece of UI, look back at the road because you have traveled about 100m without checking what in front of you, or coming at you from the side, keep your finger on the same trajectory towards the desired UI then BUMP, you hit a slight depression in the road and FUUUUUUUUUUUKKKKKK you just switched off your favourite podcast and switched on the FM radio you never use so it’s never tuned and it in so it goes BRRRRSHHHSHHSTTTSHHEEEEXXXHS. Then it takes about 4 or 5 steps to get back your podcast, each of which can turn out to be exactly the same as the one which switched on the FM radio.

Touch screen in cars. Whomever it was that signed off on that development, may you suffer a long and painful death.

    fat_stig,

Are you using Prowlarr? It allows you to use both Usenet and Torrent sources transparently with the Arrs. Works really well for me and you get good performance stats of each source.

    fat_stig,

My wife and I have compact, roll up shopping bags, she always has one in her handbag, mine is in my backpack, for the past 10 years. The only time we used bags from a store was when we shopped for seafood in Hong Kong’s wet markets.

    fat_stig,

Just like with IE in the distant past, I’m noticing websites that insist that you use Chrome to use their systems, lazy Devs can’t be arsed to make their code platform agnostic. Or more likely, management took the decision. Where I work we have transitioned to Edge because it works with our back end systems. But there are still some SaaS systems I use that only guarantee compatibility with Chrome.

I use Firefox at home, natch.

Edit; I use Firefox on my Sony phone as well, have uninstalled Chrome but now I find that ChatGPT only works with Chrome. Agghhh

X, formerly Twitter, faces 2,200 arbitration cases and filing fees over $3 million (www.nbcnews.com)

X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, is facing 2,200 arbitration cases that ex-employees filed after Elon Musk took over the company, slashed headcount, and made other sweeping changes there. The filing fees alone for that volume of cases could amount to $3.5 million....

    fat_stig,

Xitter is a good compromise, and almost onomatopoeic.

How do people find good information on the internet these days?

It used to be that you would do a search on a relevant subject and get blog posts, forums posts, and maybe a couple of relevant companies offering the product or service. (And if you wanted more information on said company you could give them a call and actually talk to a real person about said service) You could even trust...

    fat_stig,

I used to frequent searchlores.org and fravia.com back in the day, they were a treasure trove of specialised web search and data mining techniques.

As a 14-year long user, the new Fisher Price UI makes me sad :( What have they done to you, Reddit? (i.imgur.com)

Notice there is only 1 full headline (from /r/NoStupidQuestions) visible, it doesn’t even show the full post. There are 3 of those “trending” boxes but only 2 of those even fit their headlines because they are like 3 words long, they cut off anything longer including the description...

    fat_stig,

I have noted that RES never-ending Reddit seems to have been borked, with duplicate posts appearing both sides of the page break. I’m running ublock origin and pihole which might contribute to it.

    fat_stig,

Usenet to digg, digg to reddit, reddit to lemmy.

Oh, I never stopped using usenet 😅

When the fuck did a mobile hotspot become something you have to pay extra for?

It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. I tried to switch to a mobile hotspot and my phone...

    fat_stig,

When I was living in the UK 10 years ago, the 3 mobile company actually blocked anyone from tethering on their network, not sure if this is still the case. They had a banging unlimited data package that was very popular, but they realised pretty quickly that unlimited data + tethering was a recipe for financial ruin so they tightened the noose and stopped it.

How is pirating software a thing?

I understand that sharing video, photos, documents etc. is relatively safe because the data is not executed in the processor as instructions. How come people are willing to download and install pirated software though? How can one be confident that it does not contain malicious addons? Are people just don’t know the risks? Or...

    fat_stig,

Same here, 11+ years ex-Digg and a Sync user for the last 5 years, previously RIF. I deleted all my Reddit posts, still dip in to catch up with some niche subs, but looking forward to seeing my new home develop.

    fat_stig,

Tampermonkey expands the functionality you can use to take control, I use the twitter control panel to transform the mobile experience of X. No need for the app with all the forced Elmo bollocks.
