essellburns,

Easy there Skeeter, they ain’t hurtin no one.

essellburns,

I’ve seen that movie. America did all the fighting by itself

essellburns,

The algorithm knows what you need better than you do

essellburns,

Loads of people have habitual attraction to unhealthy relationship patterns.

Being drawn to the same kind of asshole over and over can feel like a chemical green flag, wisdom and experience show it’s a red flag and things always end the same unhappy way

essellburns,

Absolute poverty or relative poverty?

essellburns,

Disclaimer, not an American. I’m answering with my perspective for what it’s worth and because no one else has.

From what I’m able to see here, there’s a lot of Americans who are doing absolutely fine. Many of them. Seems there’s enough who are that the ones who complain about their unreasonable treatment don’t have enough voice to change things.

It’s true that every human society has rich and poor, the ones with abundance and those who struggle. The weird part from where I’m standing is that not every Human society declares itself the Greatest country in the world.

I wonder how much that kind of propaganda impacts on people’s ability to see the flaws and make the changes. Seems many Americans don’t even see the systemic problems there as problems. They see the people struggling as the problem.

When I hear stories of things like children who refuse to swear an oath of loyalty every morning being shamed and ostracised I really do fear for their ability to be honest with each other.

essellburns,

Admiral Karen

essellburns,

Don’t worry it’s a harmless assumption because everybody except the karens has the capacity to laugh at themselves

essellburns,

What are you views on Admiral Jarok?

essellburns,

Coz I get to carry on doing what I’m doing while the food turns up. It a suitable temperature, takes no time at all for me to walk to the door to thank the driver and it’s totally worth the extra 20% it costs me compared to picking it up. Especially if I’ve been drinking

essellburns,

Yeah, where I am, it’s about 20-25%, depending on the size of the order.

Delivery is usually about £5 and the food is gonna be £20-£40

essellburns,

C’mon, can’t leave master of Orion out

essellburns,

Talking about any ear or hearing trouble and someone replies “pardon?”

🤦🤬

essellburns,

I’d like to believe I’d still have that reaction to this “joke” even if my hearing was fine, still I do agree with you that it’s really extra infuriating when explaining a genuine hearing issue

essellburns,

The reason is because of the bias in the studies themselves.

For example, there’s more studies showing that internet addiction is bad for teenagers because more studies have been run on teenagers.

Addiction of any kind of harmful to all age groups. The ways in which it impacts people depends on their life circumstances. For example, older people are more likely to lose a job or a marriage due to addiction than a teenager is, that’s not because of the nature of their addiction.

The simplest explanation is that some teenagers are depressed or otherwise struggling and turn to social media and internet because that’s what they have to help them cope. It’s a natural correlation, this study is saying that we don’t have the evidence to imply causation.

It’s easy for some people, especially those unfamiliar with online activities and particularly those who don’t value online activity, to see the correlation and blame. This is really helpful as it means they can avoid addressing the cause of the initial depression.

essellburns,

Yeah, totally. I lived rural with a poor connection at the time.

Company had a remote server in a data centre for our CRM, website and such as we had people in three locations. total overkill really for what we needed in my opinion and it was 99% idle in the evenings.

So I used it to host half life deathmatch and team fortress back in the day when these were cutting edge. Four to six players each night having fun we couldn’t have had otherwise.

essellburns,

Homeworld

As a game there’s been a few attempts, none have captured the simple beauty of the original, even if they were good in their own right.

In a way, Tasha Yar's fate actually worked out really well for the series

I don’t know whether this is an unpopular opinion or not but I actually think that the way Tasha Yar died gave the show much higher stakes throughout it’s entire run. Here is the chief security officer, main bridge crew, tragic back story, potential love interest for the robot character just slapped down by the monster of...

essellburns,

Is that the one with the robots who challenge him to a dance contest?

Rhythm is futile?

essellburns,

Not really achieving a degoogle that way though, they’re still getting all their tracking data

essellburns,

What would I do with the inheritance? 🤔

Treat myself to a takeaway, except now I could afford to get it delivered!

essellburns,

I have an idea. It might be controversial but hear me out…

essellburns,

Felt. But in the past tense.

Elephants give each other names — the 1st non-human animals to do so, study claims (www.livescience.com)

Name a famous elephant. Babar, perhaps? Or Dumbo? Memorable though these monikers may be to humans, they sound nothing like the names elephants give each other. If you’re an elephant, your name is something more like a low, rumbling sound, scientists say....

essellburns,

I believe dolphins give themselves names, one of points in the article.

essellburns,

In the UK all bank notes have traces of cocaine on them.

In Canada, it’s maple Syrup

essellburns,

And that combined with the typical degree of kleptomania experienced by most Canadians is where we get the expression “Sticky Fingered”

essellburns,

Your sense of irony rivels an American.

essellburns,

Not in the UK. Our government is looking to ban the tents next. That’ll fix the homeless issue 😕

essellburns,

A bloodbath… 😕

As opposed to the peaceful coexistence they typically enjoy?

essellburns,

Girders… I bet it’s made of bulkheads! Or conduits!

essellburns,

In a lot of places these don’t apply, most western countries cops are not allowed to lie

essellburns,

UK cops are so careful about it, according to my two friends who do or did that work. They know their work can be undone in an instant if they’re caught in a lie and it’ll impact on them personally.

Funny how accountability in the police makes a difference to abuse!

essellburns,

🤷

I’ve known him for over 30 years so don’t expect me to agree

essellburns,

I can think of nowhere else on the internet, outside of 4chan, where that would be appropriate

essellburns,

When I die I also want to be scattered in the McDonald’s ball pit. But not cremated.

essellburns,

Now… When you say “mentioning”…?

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Rebellion In Star Wars (screenrant.com)

The rebels were the original good guys of the Star Wars franchise who saved the galaxy from the evil Empire, but there are still things about the Rebellion that make no sense. Some flaws with the Rebel Alliance were always apparent from the start of the original trilogy, while other problems arose through subsequent sequels and...

essellburns,

10 You offer abundant examples though this piece that shows they’re not that organised, they have groups and factions that disagree, their battles are improvised and frantic. We get snippets of organised pieces in the films. It’s clear that strong individual leaders command loyalty and respect to hold their pieces of the rebellion together. Those pieces are “scattered throughout the galaxy” rather than working as a single organisation.

9 They didn’t, their fleet came to them already built. Many worlds and leaders joined after the destruction of the deathstar which brought them a fleet. You’re right that many worlds were terrified however that’s not important to this point since they don’t subtract from the number of ships the rebellion gained. Worth noting that despite all these gains, the rebel fleet was still a fraction of the imperial fleet.

8 You’ve answered your own question, if the tracker was still operating years later it was well hidden in the guts of the ship. Leia said the ship was being tracked, checking for it may not have been enough if it was discrete.

7 We don’t know that they did, we do know the new republic was subject to power struggles and disputes so it would be accurate to say they didn’t rally behind it, groups simply sought to define it.

6 It was built using slave labour of prisoners in a remote location. The empire had no trouble keeping even the scientists there as prisoners and using force on everyone. Given the number of people involved in this work, it does raise an eyebrow. But then only a tiny fraction of those people would be in a position to leak information, a small fraction of them would want to and a small fraction of those would be able to get the information to the rebellion. What fraction of that small number would the empire be able to stop, capture or kill?

5 This all happened in a panic, as you cite, the rebellion is not that organised. The ship Leia was captured on with the plan was the backup strategy afterall. Should they have had a better plan? Totally. Could they? I’m not sure how. Hard to switch ships with a stardestroyer chasing you.

4 This is just a semantic question of what counts as a victory. Add the word “major” or “meaningful” into the sentence if it helps.

3 They did evacuate, they also knew they had some time. The galaxy didn’t know the deathstar was blown up immediately. Given the arrogance displayed by Tarkin I wonder if anyone knew where he’d gone. If anyone did know, the reason Yavin 4 was their base is because it’s very remote, they likely knew how long they had especially given it would take time for the shocked empire to react once they realised the deathstar was out of contact.

2 Vader ordered the fleet deployed so that nothing got out of the system specifically to prevent this from happening.

1 Idealistic politician not upto the real world implication of the role? Not a plot hole, a feature not a bug.

essellburns,

I’ve not actually tried a modern sonic shower so I’ll take your word for the limitations of them as things stand and guess they’ve figured out how to make them work effectively in the next few hundred years.

I think the Ferengi we see have excellent teeth, by Ferengi standards. you can see they’ve working hard to look after them, rather than trying to look like hoomans.

essellburns,

It’s well known that Vulcans are the intellectual puppets of the federation.

Maybe that limited them?

essellburns,

My solution…

Use waterfox with cookies turned on for a small number of websites.

Use Firefox with automatically wipe for everything else.

essellburns,

Another approach would be to have Firefox remember the passwords for a small number of sites, while deleting cookies after each session

essellburns,

Sounds like he’s culturally appropriating American behaviour.

The suffering is inherent, and intentional to RULE system (lemmy.tf)

The Democracy of the founding fathers was Greek Democracy, predicated upon a slave society, and restricted to only the elite. This is the society we live in today, even with our reforms towards direct representation. The system is inherently biased towards the election of elites and against the representation of the masses....

essellburns,

Farming requires a lot more than land

essellburns,

Excellent, so we’ll need some profits on that food then, to pay them?

Let’s keep going with this thinking. We’re inventing a system from first principles

essellburns,

You’re failing to differentiate between gross and net profits.

Ever run a business?

How is everyone going to afford this food if you’re selling it for a gross profit? I believe that was your original point.

essellburns,

I should, should I?

You previously suggested I’ve not read enough economics, so should I assume you have? Do they all use that word with that meaning?

Also, I’m wondering if you have an answer to the other question. How is everyone going to afford this food that’s being sold even if it doesn’t have a markup?
