In my sixties and realising that I'm not "a bit autistic" - I am autistic - and that's why life has been so hard.

Starting #AutisticOver50 to connect with elders.

Took me a while because I've done ok and thought others must find things hard too. That didn't make sense but I assumed I was just shy, had some trauma etc., and felt bad for not being able to do stuff easily.

Realising I'm wired this way everything makes sense.

The UK is trialling a solution to the long wait and difficulty obtaining and assessments.

Rather than increase capacity they are implementing a multi-stage screening system which will make it far more onerous for those already overwhelmed and suffering.

With multi-year waits to proceed from one stage to the next, and one stage rejecting nearly nine out of ten applicants the system limits access for people who would benefit enormously if diagnosed.

Bumped into an acquaintance who I wondered might be in the spectrum today and she told me she has , but also that she didn't think this is on the spectrum.

Reading about it later it seems to me, so I'm wondering whether others here have a view on this, particularly anyone who also has misophonia.

I know this is up to her but interested in how others see it and why.

Having self dx'd early this year and started to recognise this in others I wonder about if and when to say anything.

In general I will only talk about my journey and let them realise or not, that this might be relevant them and worth looking into.

: I only sign into my email once a week.

This isn't though I do have that and it is connected. It's a way of managing my because emails from certain people are, for me like anxiety landmines that will affect me for days. I keep those people only to email communications by never answering their calls and if they text, I ask them to email.

If I need to stay away from anxiety I'll wait until I am ready.

I’ve been thinking today about autism and relationships. It started with these TikToks:
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT82J9cjA/

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT82JcNug/

I wonder: do these vibe with you like they really do for me? I also have CSA trauma, so I thought that my inability to ever be able to have “just friendship” feelings for someone was trauma based. I’m the type that has ALWAYS had crushes on friends because I just… like them?? @actuallyautistic

@dukeoffailure
It is early days for me but I'm sure my relationships will change for the better.

I have seen this already with one allistic friend who has an autistic nephew. I find him difficult because we're so different but since telling him about my autism, which he already spotted 🤷‍♂️, he's super accommodating, always asks if an arrangement is ok etc.

Met ex recently and we began to talk about it. First self reflection and she's wondering if she's on the spectrum.

Fascinating article on

https://magazine.hms.harvard.edu/articles/behind-veil-hypnagogic-sleep

It’s one of my favourite things about my crosswired brain (and a lifesaver during episodes of insomnia) that I’ve always had significant control over my hypnagogic state, though it wasn’t until a few years ago that I found out what it was and that not everyone can (or maybe they just don’t know how?)

Anyone else? Maybe my kindred? @actuallyautistic

doggle,
@doggle@mastodon.online avatar

@Maker_of_Things @drandrewv2 @actuallyautistic @HarrietMaker @The_End_Terrace this is fascinating. I like exploring mental states, different layers of imagining etc but haven't read about hypnogogia although I think I have experience it. Certainly things like the Tetris example are familiar.

I do similar for software design. Not explicitly visual although it does feel like the same brain space - shifting, sliding, rotating as I do with visual imagination, until things seem to fit or resonate.

Had a challenging day after a challenging few days and then a text from my sister early today to add to the difficulty.

I don't generally do meltdowns but thinking about this helped me spot the times I do. I held it together but am absolutely fucked off with trying to deal with issues around looking after my mum with two sisters who are hard to deal with, one of whom makes tiny bumps into unnecessarily demanding, endless difficulties (for me).

I'm working on a blog post about meditation for people who find meditation really difficult, especially thinking about autistic and ADHD folks. If this is you, I would love to know what concerns or questions you have about meditation. Please reply to this post and let me know, what makes meditation difficult for you? @actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic #adhd #audhd

@arisummerland
👍 Despite a decade of therapy and years of a "being day" every week I had no idea I had a constant background level of anxiety and was still more years from self dx!

But for about twenty years I've had a kind of ad hoc meditation/being practice, different styles over time, some I come back to now and again.

I can see how over two decades it has helped. So I spend time every day, at different times, with some kind of being time.

@lizzard @actuallyautistic he's probably old enough to understand you have needs too. When my kids were young I used to set aside time for me and get their agreement to let me have that time while they did something for me like the washing up. This was decades before I realised I was autistic but I just knew I had to have some recharge time each day. Hope that helps.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic not just for autistics!

This just made me realise something that happened a few years ago was due to my need for such clear communication, which didn't happen. I expressed interest in giving a presentation but neither of us confirmed. When I didn't turn up the organiser was furious! And I'm like WTF.

Now I can see the gap between autistic and allistic communication, but can't understand how they operate without what for me is essential: clarity.

doggle,
@doggle@mastodon.online avatar

@chromatic @AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic it's a factor but not in the case I described.

On the same topic, on Thursday a friend visited who I've not seen for ages but we both wanted to meet again while he's just 10 minutes walk away.

I wanted a day we could sit outside but he couldn't make Friday. Saturday was forecast heavy rain but he insisted he'd come this morning.

He's not come, no contact 🤷‍♂️

I expected this TBH but it is still frustrating.

@simid @KatyElphinstone @actuallyautistic how about "self realization".

I agree that this is very common, and tends to occur wherever humans get together to grow, with awareness of that or not. Maybe this is part of the human condition?

At different stages in our lives, our growth, we seek different things, the next thing, and much of our learning comes from stumbling or close shaves, at least for me.

doggle,
@doggle@mastodon.online avatar

@simid @KatyElphinstone @actuallyautistic what I'm saying is that while there is a lot of bad behaviour and horrific abuse, this is a reflection of humanity. One description is "collective shadow" and it is where organisations and the individuals in them don't recognise this and avoid the very difficult work to deal with it, that the abuse happens, and is covered up, or even facilitated and normalised.

doggle,
@doggle@mastodon.online avatar

@simid @KatyElphinstone @actuallyautistic I think every individual, group, organisation, culture has its dark side, and its light side or at least the potential for that. The problem is whether they individually or collectively recognise and address it.

There are groups and organisations that do, but even they can fail.

I've been doing this and I still get responses like "I can read between the lines" or no response, it a response that doesn't address the thing etc 🤷‍♂️

What I'm learning to do is draw a line, be clear and not get drawn into emotional crap (assumptions, blaming etc). They can now respond any way they like and I deal with that rather than try to change it which is what I used to do.

doggle,
@doggle@mastodon.online avatar

When the world becomes ‘too real’: a Bayesian explanation of autistic perception

https://www.cell.com/trends/cognitive-sciences/fulltext/S1364-6613(12)00200-8

We suggest specifically that attenuated Bayesian priors – ‘hypo-priors’ – may be responsible for the unique perceptual experience of autistic people, leading to a tendency to perceive the world more accurately rather than modulated by prior experience.

@doggle@mastodon.online avatar
