😂 yeah I hear you but I want the up to date Cinnamon desktop and I like how Mint has configured the system.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

It had to happen eventually. To be honest I’m surprised Microsoft still charges for Windows when Apple, Google Chrome OS and Linux offers their systems for free.

In my case I run Windows 10 in a VM on my Linux machine just to use the Canon printer which the box said supported Linux but after I bought it, their website says they no longer support Linux.

So I’m forced to use Windows.

Btw, if you use Linux ain’t buy a Canon printer. If you can, get Brother.

We have destination where I live but the problem is this: the water often smells like fish. And it’s very hard because they use so many chemicals.

I don’t think desalination is the solution.

The importance of their work and philosophy should not be underestimated. And the Libre principles are more important now than ever before.

Libre says that the user is king and the system must never be used to oppress the user. Rather the user must have fun control over the system and it’s code.

In a time where all operating systems not desktop and mobile are abusing users, taking their data and locking away the code from them accessing it, we must remember and practice the libre principles.

Use Linux on the desktop and Android on your phone. Especially custom android if you can, but even stock android still gives you a lot of control and 3rd party apps exist which protect your data.

On iPhone you have no such protection and are totally under the control and whim of apple.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Unlike iOS you can get it as AOSP which is totally open source. Sure you need to add the blobs for the specific device etc but at least it’s a good base to work off if anyone wanted to make an Android based open source phone.

iOS could never do that.

Agree though they overall there is no “true” FLOSS mobile os and the KDE and gnome one’s still have a long way to go.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Not really. Apple collects as much as Google does, I guarantee you, but they just claim they don’t look at it. Yeah right. Tell me another story Apple…

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Yes! I’ve been waiting for this and it doesn’t disappoint. SO good to have the Boost look and feel again 😀.

And the upgrade price is the best you’ll find on any Lemmy app, it’s great value. If you haven’t paid for the app do it now.

I used Boost for Reddit for years, paid of course, and so paying for Boost for Lemmy is a no brainer.

For a 1.0 release it’s great. Show Ruben the Dev that this is worth his time and pay to unlock today! 👍

There’s nothing better than Mint. I’ve tried them all. Mint is the best all rounder. Those guys really nailed it.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

PocketCasts is on Android but it’s not great. Podcast Republic is the absolute best. I’ve tried them all.

Phone is acting like mobile data is turned off when it's not

I have a Motorola edge plus that will not connect to mobile data. It will show several bars of service but the 4G icon is greyed out like it knows the service is there but will not access it I can make calls and send texts as long as they can be sent as an sms text. I use straight talk as a provider so my talks with customer...

Tbh I find the Google Files app to be fine for my needs.

However in the past I used Solid Explorer but it was simply way more than I needed. If you need that much power check it out.

For an open source FM check out Material Files. It’s like SE but free, open source and 100% spyware free.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

You might have to dual boot Windows to do this update.

danielfgom,

I wouldn’t choose a Linux phone because I don’t need a useless brick in my pocket.

But if forced, I’d look at Ubuntu Touch.

iPod management software for linux?

Is there any decent iPod management software for linux available? I have a 6th generation iPod that I use only for music and it’s really the last thing that I keep my windows partition around for. The more I use linux, the more unintuitive iTunes feels. I had tried GTKPod in the past and one other, but they didn’t support...

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, I would sell the iPod and get a modern player that has an SD slot or is known to work with Linux.

danielfgom,

Ger more RAM if you can.

Use Debian. It’s super stable and the deb format is the most popular.

Don’t use Ubuntu because Snaps will eat all your space and RAM. Avoid like the plague!

Moving to Arch/EndeavorOS from PopOS?

I’ve been using PopOS for a few months now, and I’m interested in Arch, but I’m worried about whether or not I have enough experience to do that successfully. Also, I have an Nvidia GPU until I start a new build in the next year or so. I don’t know if that’ll be a problem in Arch. It was a major issue with Fedora for...

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Use a pre packaged easy to use Arch like Endeavour OS, Garuda Linux (best arch I’ve tried, very fast) etc. But avoid Manjaro - it WILL break your system.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve always had issues with this app. Could never get it to run properly and it doesn’t support the Old Reader API which is the Google Reader API so it’s open source and freely available. There no excuse for not supporting it first.

  1. Improve the hardware ecosystem. Create an open source code for hardware makers so for example no matter what make of Bluetooth headphones you use, when you open them, the device immediately sees them and gives you that nice slide up sheet like on Pixel and iPhone.

Make this work on all Android devices by default.

  1. Better integration with computers for things like copy/paste etc. Instead of Samsung, Huawei, Google each making their own Windows software or Chrome OS software to make copy/paste from the phone to the pc seamless, build into Android a way to make ALL phones work with any pc (Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome) out of the box.

Basically it should work via the browser and not be OS limited. Use the already present “Nearby Share” but find a way to make it work via the pc browser, but seamlessly and in the background.

  1. Desktop Mode standard on ALL phones from the cheapest to the premium. Whenever someone buys an Android they should rest assured this works by default.
  2. UWB/locatin tracking. Much like iPhone can find a airtag or your phone under the couch or your wife at the market with a big arrow on the screen showing you where to go. This should also be in Android, on ALL phones grub budget to premium.

This gets used quite a lot by people and will only get more popular for tracking pets, children, cars, luggage etc. My wife constantly forgets where she left her phone. This feature would be used daily in our house.

In general I’d say all new tech added to Android must work on ALL phobes at all price points by default. Even older phones should get them via a Play Store update.

The principle is this: unify the platform from the OS point of view. There should be no differences in the OS between devices. Only the hardware and home screen skin should be different but anyone who picks up an Android should have the same features no matter price.

This will give switchers and even seasoned users confidence in their purchase and the knowledge/expectation of a certain functional standard across the board.

That’s why people like iPhone. No matter which one they get, they all work the same (except when Apple restricts certain features to Pro models)

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I like it. Pity it won’t have a headphone jack and SD card slot…

Vivaldi is my main browser of choice but Firefox is my backup. I’m logged into both and have sync enabled and have them installed on Linux and my Android.

If a site doesn’t work on Vivaldi, I’ll try it on FF.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Basically not all apps support it. The developer of the app must update his app to support it.

Secondly there are icon packs you can buy where the dev of the icons manually created all of them. But even there, some apps will still be in their normal colour because he hasn’t made an icon for that app yet.

Most people just remove the apps from the home screen and leave only the themed apps

Forty years of GNU and the free software movement (www.fsf.org)

On September 27, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) celebrates the 40th anniversary of the GNU operating system and the launch of the free software movement. Free software advocates, tinkerers, and hackers all over the world will celebrate this event, which was a turning point in the history of computing. Forty years later, GNU...

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Basically when you log into your Linux pc, everything you see and click on is GNU. Only the invisible part that makes your hardware work (display driver, usb driver, printer driver etc) is Linux (the kernel)

The kernel recognises only hardware and peripherals. Everything else you do on your system is GNU.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know. That’s odd. Try something like a pink wallpaper and see if you get pink options without blue.

You should be able to also manually select a colour of your choice.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

On the upside they are helping secure Linux because now the the appropriate action can be taken to prevent this in future.

I’m sure a security patch has already been released. The Linux community normally addresses these things very quickly.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Sure. I’m not excusing it, just saying now they we know about it, at least it can get patched. Nothing worse than having a security hole going unpatched for years.

These “experts” are crazy. How can it be kosher when it’s not a naturally occurring meat?

This would be what the Bible calls an abomination. I’m not touching that stuff, it’s gross!

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it does. There are very specific commands for what food you can and cannot eat.

Also there are many commands that tell you not to mess with creation:

  1. Do not mix seed in your field
  2. Do not mix linen clothes with cotton clothes
  3. Do not shave/destroy your beard: because it is natural and was given to you by God. Do not destroy it
  4. A man shall not wear women’s clothing or a woman man’s clothing. Again, the principle is: respect the natural order. A man is a man, a woman is a woman

In all these commands the principle is to not mess with the naturally created order of things.

Therefore GM food if is an abomination. As is lab grown meat because this is not the naturally created order. Meat is only to be obtained from killing a clean animal who was naturally born and raised (no clones or lab grown animals)…

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t care. God never created it that way. He made animals. You kill a clean animal which was naturally born by its parents and that you can eat.

Not this fake meat.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Who said I thought I was knowledgeable? I’m telling you that according to God, this is wrong. Don’t eat it

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

“cultivated artificially” - you just said it. If it’s artificial it’s not natural.

I choose to obey God. You need to make your own decision but be aware that hell is a real place. You don’t want to go there, trust me.

It’s very clear in scripture. It’s written in black and white.

danielfgom,

My phone has all of these, except for the removable battery.☺️

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Nova Launcher. Buy the Prime unlock for full features. Still the best Android launcher ever.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Yes and it is worrying. Google ought to make everything AOSP and but keep anything proprietary. They have nothing to lose so I don’t understand why they are stripping stuff from AOSP.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

With so many OEM’s running to get Google Play services I don’t think there’s any risk they would lose that. Anyone wanting to make their own phone without Google services is going to have a hard time selling that phone.

Mostly it’s only the 3rd party ROM’s that use it the most, and they are a tiny niche.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Many Android phones already have had buttons and more. My phone has an assistant button which I wish would become a shutter button when I open the camera, and do something else when I double tap. But it’s not programmable sadly.

Now that Apple has done it, maybe it will make a comeback on Android…

At least I have really useful ports like a headphone jack and SD card slot. iPhone doesn’t have that yet… Lol

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I bought it new actually. Last December. Sony Xperia 10iii. In the meantime the 10v just came out a month ago.

I specifically bought Sony because it has a headphone jack and SD card slot.

But I know what you mean. It’s so hard to find anything above €450 the has a headphone jack. Only the Sony Xperia’s and the Asus ZenFone as far as I’m aware.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll take a look. Thanks

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

I wouldn’t say 50% but definitely more expensive. I don’t think they have the mass manufacturing that the Chinese companies have so their components and build costs are probably higher.

Change my Mind! - I like the linux,but some things keeps me staying on Windows.

Recently, I switched from Windows to Linux, tried many distros, and ended up with the Ubuntu rolling-release. Things went well for some days, but I started facing some issues like printer issues, gaming performance issues, and overall Ubuntu performance issues. So, I switched to where it all started, which is Windows 10. Now...

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Lenovo laptops generally work well with Linux but even your HP should run it fine.

However if you have the budget definitely get a machine from a dedicated Linux OEM like System 76, Tuxedo, Slimbook etc. That’s also one in the UK who I can’t remember. Just Google it.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Entroware. Just heard it on a Linux podcast and it reminded me.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Allegedly but most of the Devs are full time Redhat employees…so you know.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

The only back door that could exist is SELinux, the NSA created security suite.

But even if there is no backdoor, the fact that the government agencies are Red hat’s biggest clients is very worrying.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. Not just money, but it cost them their freedom.
