When you comment, it's soon lost to history, buried by newer stuff. If you happen on a post more than a day or two old, it doesn't make sense...
I would argue that the current form of Lemmy (and kbin, and lotide) is a lot like a forum, to the point that there’s a phpbb front-end.
I think the key to long-term discussions is going to be having small enough communities that you can recognize the other people you’re talking with.
Once you recognize the person you’re talking with, then the conversation naturally becomes a continuation of the last one.
My soapbox instance is a good example. There’s a number of people that I routinely have discussions with, and because I recognize those people and I know who they are, and I know where they’re coming from, we don’t need to rehash earlier forms of the discussion. Instead, we can keep the conversation going even though the Twitter style conversation thread would suggest that you can’t do that.
One of the things that I think will help in the long term is having profile pictures. Somebody who’s having a conversation with me may not remember my specific name, but the icon next to my message is going to be the same and so they will remember the last time that they had a conversation with me.
I think that that sort of long-term conversation also might help with some mutual tolerance. You see someone, and you know their views and so you end up having a conversation with the person rather than with the class of people that they represent.
I think that’s one of the biggest problems in political discourse online today, is that instead of people having conversations, people have conversations with classes of people as represented by one other person. In that way, there can’t be any nuance because not agreeing with the class that you represent is itself a sort of own, instead of common ground two individuals can agree with.

I don't think everyone should be forced to give away everything they don't need to survive, I just think (in America's case) if you have enough wealth for several generations to live in luxury while our people are dying from inaccessible medicine and healthcare and more than half of our country has no savings living paycheck to paycheck, we've massively failed as a society to provide basic needs for our people. You could fund universal healthcare with just a tax on billionaires and they wouldn't have to change their lifestyle at all. If I had enough money that I lost 90% of it and I literally couldn't notice the difference, I'd be full of guilt every night watching people die because they rationed their insulin.
They still benefit from regime in place to maintain their wealth and many are by default daddy's lap dogs.

I disagree. Sometimes, due to your particular circumstances, life forces duties and responsibilities on you. If you choose to become a police officer, but you're too cowardly to protect children from getting shot, that is a bad act and you are a bad person for doing it. If you are born into wealth, you are obligated to help the less fortunate. If you don't do it, that is a bad act and makes you a bad person. It would take a LOT of other good acts to atone for that.
I have all these things because of subsidies and welfare, or I'd be out on the street because I'm a disabled older person on SSDI. And even these things are a pittance, barely allow me to make ends meet, and are always in danger of being cut or completely gutted by the rich fucks hoarding all the money. I actually think this is the fate of the entire corporate driven part of the internet (so basically 95% nowadays, lol). Non-corporate, federated platforms are the future and will remain as the bastions of actual human interaction while the rest of the internet is being FUBAR by large language model bots.
I now want to make a bot that detects bots, grades their responses as 0% - 100% bot, posts the bottage score, and if they determine bottage, engage the other bot in endless conversation until it melts down from confusion.
