The problem is when you pay somebody to do the work. Nobody spends as much time as you. Building these days is a slap-it-together endeavor. They will get the job done in half the time you would, but it’s not quite as good as you would have done.

High dietary fiber like beer, veggies, or beans creates large amounts of gas, but meat is what makes it smell bad. In my opinion pork is the worst, beef is not great, and chicken is still bad but the least offensive. Eggs can be sulphuric. If you want to deodorize your farts try being vegetarian for 2 or 3 days.

Solar power is really cheap. If we only needed it for low wattage DC, like lights and electronics, it could be built fairly cheap even with storage. But most home energy use is high wattage AC. That gets expensive pretty quickly, unless you do your own electrical work.

Tor routes through relays, which could be run by digital rights holders or government entities. Presumably they could trace with some effort. VPN is an encrypted connection to some trusted party who is accepting your money. Some VPN providers have policies about keeping no logs of your network traffic. Presumably the VPN provider needs good lawyers to know they can safely discard and ignore all the copyright notices. If the VPN provider did keep logs, and if they were legally compromised in some way, the VPN would no longer be protective.

Here are my apple seeds. I read some tutorials online about keeping them in the fridge to simulate stratification before they germinate. Someone suggested doing more than one seed just in case they don’t take. Much to my surprise after nearly three months in the fridge, this is what they look like today. Anyone know if I should plant these in dirt now? I live in a northern wintery Canadian climate so they can’t go outside. I don’t know what I should do!

Emby is the premium version of Jellyfin. I have found the meta information works a lot better. I haven’t done much transcoding but it does support it, and there are more apps to access it. Not too happy with the iOS app but the LG WebOS app works great.

What VPN do you use and why?

If you are a pirate VPN is an essential tool. I am trying to ascertain the popularity of various VPNs in piracy community. In this excerise, I will list several Popular VPNs in the comment if you use one of them just upvote that comment and reply the reason. If you don’t find your VPN listed add a comment with just their name....

ISP can’t track bittorrent content without downloading the same torrent as you. They only see domain names of trackers and ip addresses of peers. The content itself is either obfuscated or encrypted.

antlion,
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Except that’s like dividing by zero. A millibit is undefined. A bit is the smallest indivisible unit of digital information.

But capitalization is important to distinguish between b for bit and B for Byte.

A part-time lecturer makes $3100 for a 3-unit class for the semester. Basically volunteering.

antlion,
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Not sure if you did the math on my figure but even at 15 units, it’s $31k per year. You want to learn something from somebody with a lot of education and experience, you need pay them fairly for their time. If the job paid well, you’d get a larger pool of qualified and passionate instructors. It’s hard to be passionate about teaching students who don’t want to be there, who are all paying way too much for tuition, while being paid a poverty wage.

I’ve been on both sides of the classroom in the past 10 years. I have a full time job that makes $130k. I think $8 to $9k for teaching a 3-unit course would be a fair wage. Roughly triple the current rate.

Also worth noting my number is for a part time lecturer. These are mostly working professionals and retired professors. They are not represented by the College Faculty Assn. However, they do represent a significant portion of instruction at CSU, and they do displace/diminish bargaining power of higher wage workers in CFA.

Do you have roommates? Siblings? How do you get along with them? What kind of friend are you?

Do you have any interesting talents or skills?

What kind of person do you want to meet? Would you date a vegan? What about overweight or obese? Do you want to consume drugs/alcohol together? Do you want to play Portal 2 Co-Op? Do you want to move in and get a dog?

What are you studying? What books and movies do you like most and why? Does Linkin Park help you with suicidal thoughts or make it worse?

antlion,
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Planning to draw? The only way to get better at drawing is to do it, a lot! Every day.

Living at home is probably not a selling point but it’s probably best to be upfront about it, maybe you’ll find a girl who’s living at home too. Better not to waste somebodies time, or your own, if that’s a big deal to somebody.

If I was you I’d describe your ideal date, maybe it’s a long shot, but if it works it’s a slam dunk. So like, where would you eat out, or take out, which video game would you play, movie would you watch, what beer do you want to drink? Or maybe your ideal date is to get donuts and go to a quiet place in nature and read a book?

Anyway by being honest about yourself, and what you’re looking for, you may not be successful but you won’t waste any bodies time (including your own).

@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Don’t go off the book. Deadly gallerinas are brown too. Like death caps it takes 2-3 days before the first symptoms. Too late for stomach pumping, you just go straight to liver failure and dialysis or life support. Not worth it.

XKCD is usually more astute. The lack of the Colorado River, and The Grand Canyon, is a glaring omission.

antlion,
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

What could possibly cleave the continent more than the Grand Canyon? In many places it’s a barrier that can’t be crossed except by flight.

It’s a prominent river until Yuma, AZ, which is not too far from the Gulf of California. And even if the water doesn’t always flow, it forms the boundary between the Mexican states of Baja and Sonora.

antlion,
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

No river can be traced all the way up to a dividing ridge. As the contributing drainage area gets smaller it will be a stream, then creek, trickle, gulley, and by the time it’s on a mountain ridge it’s nothing.

Edit: 10/23 I took a lot of advice from here, I bought an avocado yesterday and I tried it today. It was perfect! The taste was incredible. I didn’t need to salt/season it to hide anything. Avos can bruise before they are soft. The bruises go sour before the whole fruit is soft. Most grocery stores absolutely abuse the fruits. Find a store that doesn’t. Look for a single layer, not a pyramid, heap, or pile. Costco keeps them in the flat boxes.

Anyway the restaurants buy them wholesale and they’re cared for in nice flat boxes so they can ripen beautifully.

I’m running Emby with 4k content from an Odroid HC-2. If you have a 4k TV it should support the H.265 codec without transcoding so the resources for sending videos is low.

I feel like we're all stuck in a movie where all the rich people live on some kind of floating island or satellite with everything they need to live well, and all of us have zero chance of going there

I have seen a few of these with similar story lines and realized we are living it right now. They have the best healthcare, the best food, the best everything and most of us are a few dollars from disaster. That scares some of us to death literally from all the stress it causes.

You’re not wrong. And anybody who could afford to stop them is too busy fighting a culture war to organize. Who do you think is stoking animosity? MLKJ wasn’t assassinated for civil rights, it was for the Poor Peoples Campaign. The only thing that could stop them is the unity of all those living paycheck to paycheck, regardless of religion or race.

With a torrent you’re downloading from many unknown peers, one of which could be a rights holder lawyer who will log your IP and send a threatening letter to your internet service provider. With Soulseek you are downloading from only one peer.

With a torrent you are downloading and uploading chunks at the same time. With Soulseek you have options about what you share for upload. If you were to get in trouble legally on Soulseek, it would probably be for what’s in your shared library, not for what you downloaded.

However, it’s not super polite to download from others without sharing. Some users block uploading to peers who aren’t sharing anything. My advice would be to go to your local library and find a few rare CDs of local music. Rip them to MP3 at a good bitrate and share them. Or maybe classical music? I’m not a lawyer, but just think of what music you can share where the artist or record label isn’t going to sue you. Independent and smaller record labels are probably not going to sue you.

Highest elevation so far Mt Whitney (14,505’, 4,421 m). Pretty uneventful climb since it was the end of over two weeks on the John Muir Trail. The previous 5 days was almost entirely avoid 10,000 ft. We slept on the shoulder of the mountain and sauntered up in the morning in about an hour.

Highest climb from the bottom to top was maybe Mt Williamson (14,379’, 4383 m). Trailhead is about 6300 ft, so at least 8,000 ft of climbing (2440 m). It was very difficult, climbed over 2 days. Not much time to adapt to the altitude. The hardest part was the realization that the top is exactly half way. I just wanted to paraglide down or get a helicopter ride. Some very difficult rocky terrain.

Honorable mention is Mauna Kea (4207 m). I had a magical elixir of coffee and Maca (REBBL Chocolate flavor), and powered to the top without altitude sickness. I haven’t tried it since, but I will try Maca again next time I’m going up in elevation above 10k ft.

Sharing your life with somebody requires a lot of flexibility and compromise. The longer you spend alone, pretending to know which traits you want in a partner, the less likely you’ll ever be able to find a real partner. Or if you find one, she won’t like you very much. It takes practice and patience to get good at sharing your life with somebody.

Your best bet is to murder your waifu, and embrace the loneliness to motivate you to find something more meaningful.

They have an IRC chat. If you had skill cracking apps or something they might let you in that way.
