andrewrgross,

Ohhhhh the electrons go through the holes! Brilliant!

andrewrgross,

Well handled!

Are you a part of a local tenants union? They can provide advice and access to lawyers at rates a renter can afford, fyi.

Imagine trying to convince a judge that a potted plant is a seasonal decoration lmfao

andrewrgross,

But will it survive clickbait titles!?!!?

WILL IT?

(Yes, it will survive these).

andrewrgross,

That’s a shame. I had no idea he was 70.

It’s weird: 10 years ago I would’ve said, “Well, 70 is a good long life, right?” But now I have parents that age and it doesn’t feel that old.

andrewrgross,

Wow. I admit: multicolor prints kind of make me angry with some kind of irrational insecure jealousy.

The funny part is that I don’t really ever find myself wanting multi-color prints, I just hate that they look so good and I can’t do them.

But these are admittedly cool.

andrewrgross,

You might as well tell me to whittle this out of birch and paint it.

I didn’t get into this hobby to do things like “swapping filaments”. 🤮 (kidding)

andrewrgross,

I’m glad to see this is getting bipartisan momentum. I’d be curious to hear Lindsay Graham’s thoughts on this alone. I know Warren’s points, but I’m surprised that Lindsay Graham was motivated to work on this in any cooperative fashion with Warren.

andrewrgross,

THANK YOU.

The joke about red shirts makes no effing sense any more. It hasn’t made sense in over thirty years. I’ve never watched TOS, I started with TNG a couple of years ago, and I remember thinking during the first season (as a new arrival to the fandom giving it an overdue watch) that the jokes I’d always heard about red shirts were confusing, because random deaths were not that common on the show. People died occasionally, but the trope of unnamed crew members being killed unceremoniously to convey stakes did not appear in TNG, and I couldn’t help but notice that captain Picard himself was wearing this supposedly cursed color.

It makes me so frustrated to see this lazy, lazy, lazy zombie joke that just won’t go away.

andrewrgross, (edited )

WTF.

What the actual fuck. Christ.

Edit: someone shared a post where the creator was like, “My bad, that’s fucked up”, and that’s good enough for me.

andrewrgross,

It’ll be interesting to see how they process this, because it’s such in-your-face evidence that their whole theory of the the new business model is completely ass-backwards.

People don’t want tons and tons of mediocre crap, they want a few great things. They don’t want endless rehashes and drivel, they want things that are interesting and challenging. They don’t just want small screens to keep them company while they do laundry, they want actual cinema in a communal setting. The value doesn’t come from convenience or volume, or algorithms, it comes from artists.

I know that they’ll do anything to avoid recognizing these truths, but it’ll be odd to watch.

andrewrgross,

Matt Stoller has a good article on how vertical integration led to this situation, but I gotta go to bed. The article talks about how Back to the Future and Ghostbusters couldn’t be made today, if anyone wants to go looking for it. It’s very good.

andrewrgross,

I think the ideal arrangement is one of choice, where you have the option to enjoy movies in isolation and I have the ability to show up to a crowded theater and pay $25 dollars for the experience of having people ask to take a picture with me because I’m wearing a homemade costume made out of shipping boxes to see the fifth reboot of a film adaption of a cartoon adapted from a line of '90s toys.

andrewrgross,

That’s a sad story. It sounds like a good utility, and the outcome too common.

andrewrgross,

Dunno. I cross posted from c/shoplifting, though. Ask the original poster there, maybe.

andrewrgross,

Wait what?

I’m just hearing about this!

andrewrgross,

Geez, go watch lower decks.

andrewrgross,

Wow, thanks!

andrewrgross,

Let me help you out: Boimler is a Feliz, and Mariner is an Oscar.

Now can someone explain all four LD characters based on their M* A* S* H counterparts? I want to make the joke but I’m literally not old enough to.

andrewrgross,

I don’t think there’s a benefit to trying to convince people to get the way you feel. Instead, make sure people looking for an alternative have one and let people who like Reddit go in peace.

andrewrgross,

It’s funny how often this adage is misused. But yeah, this is right! What Mack said.

andrewrgross,

There’s plenty of ways to point out that what your siblings are saying is just terrible and wrong on all levels, and utterly dismissive of the experience of so many adopted kids, but I think the most important thing is this: what good are words like “true” or “real” if what your siblings said were true?

It would be like if someone said that the manufactured insulin a diabetic took wasn’t real insulin. If your definition of “real” doesn’t include the thing that fulfills a things fundamental role, then your definition of real and true is reserved for useless nonsense.

This woman made you feel like you had someone looking out for you in the world, concerned for you. That is what love is. If that’s not real, then I don’t want whatever “real” is. This world is full of people who could give each other the care we each need, and anyone who thinks we need to limit that based on something as primitive as bloodlines needs is, forgive my language, an effing idiot.

andrewrgross,

In Jewish tradition, the answer is burial.

Personally, I think immolation – burning – is an elegant way of returning something to the world without taking space or requiring much effort. I know people have an aversion to burning books, bit I think the difference is similar to that difference between burying a loved one after they pass and burying an enemy alive.

If your city offers industrial composting, I’d compost your books.

Lastly, you can do any of these, including throwing books in the trash with a statement of gratitude. Mari Kondo advises that we thank or belongings for their service and then throw them in the trash.

andrewrgross,

Hey! You were at Open Sauce!

Did you stop by the Hextraction booth?

andrewrgross,

I volunteered at the booth!

You know, it turns out that head title works great as a compliment to the cannon tile? We found that if you shoot the cannon at Zach’s head, and the ball rolls off to the right or left and falls onto the tile below and to the sides.

andrewrgross,

War is hell. That statement is both true and has lost all meaning, because no one really feels it.

We should be negotiating a peace by now. The suffering of these cluster bombs cause is immeasurable, as is the general suffering of this war.

Imagine ::: spoiler spoiler beating a puppy to death with a golf club:::. Imagine the whole thing vividly, and then imagine

spoilerpushing the pulpy body aside

and doing it again, and just repeating this exercise ad nausium for hours and hours. This is the kind of feeling we should experience when we read stories about this conflict, if we had any concept of what a war is. And when we debate whether to use cluster bombs, that’s like debating whether to use

spoilera nine iron or crush the puppy’s skull slowly with a boot

. One is definitely, definitely DEFINITELY WORSE, and should NEVER BE DONE, but both are awful and should make us so physically ill to think about that we would do anything at all – such as negotiate an end to the war! – to avoid doing it.

andrewrgross,

I don’t have the energy for fights. Just look at some of the other comments I posted. The TLDR is that we need to always be guided by actually acting in the interests of vulnerable Ukrainians, and that requires ending the war, and negotiation is how wars end. It’s not surrender, it’s not appeasement, it’s how wars end even when you win. What’s happening now is mostly driven by US interests to weaken a geopolitical foe and is totally divorced from concern for the people on the ground. Cluster bombs prove it.

I don’t think you or me or anyone in this thread would ever, ever support the use of cluster bombs in a place where we intended to raise our children or children’s children. Does that make sense? Their use is just evidence that hurting Russia is the point. Negotiation is how you do the actual thing people seem to believe fighting does.

Upgraded my Voxelab Aquila today to a PEI bed (i.imgur.com)

My Voxelab Aquila came with a standard glass printbed. So far I thought I had no issues. Recently I thought I will printing PETG a try. Result -> no chance to get that print from the bed without damaging one of both (of course I let I cool down first). But even before I had more and more adhesion problems. So after a few friends...

andrewrgross,

Not to overhype this stuff, but I did this a few months ago, and was amazed at the improvement of bed adhesion. It was a game changer, and I was kicking myself for not having done it earlier.

Just incredible stuff. What’s your experience been?

andrewrgross,

I appreciate that the article mentioned that Threads isn’t federated and these claims often never materialize, because I feel like this is the most important fact, and it’s barely discussed.

Threads is not federated. There’s nothing to defederate from, and it’s unclear if there ever will be.

All the benefits of embracing activitypub are provided by announcing adoption, and all the downsides only materialize by actually doing the hard part. Based on experience and logic I think federation will happen far, far in the future if ever.

andrewrgross,

No instances have defederated, because no issuances have federated. Threads does not use activitypub, and is not a federated platform.

They’ve said they will in the future, but these people also say your privacy is safe and that they are serious about fighting disinformation and climate change.

Threads is not federated. It may never be. Anyone is free to plan preemptive action, but I’d like to squash this misunderstanding so everyone knows: none of your current instances are federated with Meta.

andrewrgross,

Yeah, that’s exactly what I think is the strategy.

If I were the VP or whatever in charge of this – which means that I’m assuming I’m a dishonest corporate shill – I’d create a roadmap to integrating activitypub that includes the very most basic functionality as the first deliverable, then any usability or UX features as round two deliverables. Then I’d tell the project manager to plan for an open-ended “assessment” period between completing round one and starting round two, and tell them to move on to other tasks until further notice,

IF they ever finish, you just announce that it’s technically possible for someone on Mastadon to query the Threads server and vice-versa, but, like there’s no way to actually find people on Mastadon servers in Threads or follow them, and vice-versa, and then leave it that way. And that assumes the project doesn’t just get suspended at some point and left that way.

andrewrgross,

You know, this is one of the better phoned in posts.

With my recent de-modding and ban from the DnDMemes sub, I now have plenty of time to touch grass and help grow this community/instance. AMA I guess? (ttrpg.network)

For the record, I fully support what the remaining mod team is doing, they are a wonderful group and I trust them completely. I don’t regret the choices I made, only that my actions got a few other mods shit canned in the process.

andrewrgross,

Are you in contact with the other two mods who got kicked? u/4cheese u/EquivalentInflation? How did the admins decide who got the hammer?

Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard

https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/11/23779039/microsoft-activision-blizzard-ftc-trial-win

From the article, quoting Judge Corley:

... the Court finds the FTC has not shown a likelihood it will prevail on its claim this particular vertical merger in this specific industry may substantially lessen competition. To the contrary, the record evidence points to more consumer access to Call of Duty and other Activision content. The motion for a preliminary injunction is therefore DENIED.

@gaming

andrewrgross, (edited )

Yeah, this is like watching two bad parents fight for custody of a child. Microsoft is ab-so-lutely going to limit the reach and quality of this game off their own system. They might fulfill the letter, but their intentions are clear.

andrewrgross,

This is getting saved to TWO folders!

YSK: The Fediverse is a privacy nightmare (blog.bloonface.com)

TLDR: While Fediverse won’t directly serve you ads, anonymous bad actors other than Meta can save, redistribute, and even dox you for any information you post here. Anything you post here can/will remain forever on some malicious instance that doesn’t honor deletion requests. So be careful!

andrewrgross,

Yeah, I just consider my record public. My username is my actual name. I don’t say shit I wouldn’t want anyone to know about. Simple.

andrewrgross,

At that point, I’ll just say, “I’m sorry, I’m partially deaf. Could you say that again very loudly or in different words?”

It’s a whole new world.

andrewrgross,

I strongly prefer it.

It’s a much more organic reflection of older systems. It used to be that there were local newspapers, national ones, and international ones. I want the same thing with my memes. I want a place I go to see what the hot movies and games across the world, and another where discussions are mostly people in my geography or who share a common set of tastes with me.

This idea that the internet should flatten the world into one monoculture has been, in my opinion, both naive and destructive to a lot of tastes that don’t align with the dominant tastemakers.

andrewrgross,

I tried to build one, and the hardest thing was setting up route planning. But it was also way easier than it could’ve been, and if I’d wanted to, I could’ve solved my problem by buying more common, modern sensors.

The field, I think, is moving along really well. There’s always things that could be easier, but I’m loathe to complain when so many people have made such great open source tools.

I was using ROS with a Kinect 1 and an old Roomba, running on a Jetson Nano, btw.

r/dndmemes mod u/Dalimey100 is a fucking legend (slrpnk.net)

u/Dalimey (who appropriately identifies as “LAWFUL STUPID” shared a warning from reddit admins issuing their final warning against making the sub NSFW (despite the fact that the users of the sub are in full support). They promised to reply to it with “roll for persuasion or intimidation” if they got 10k upvotes, and here...

andrewrgross,

This is their definition of “sexually oriented material”:

[A]ny material is sexually oriented if the material contains representations or descriptions, actual or simulated, of masturbation, sodomy, excretory functions, lewd exhibition of the genitals or female breasts, sadomasochistic abuse (for the purpose of sexual stimulation or gratification), homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, sexual intercourse, or physical contact with a person’s clothed or unclothed genitals, pubic area, buttocks, or the breast or breasts of a female for the purpose of sexual stimulation, gratification or perversion.”

I can’t help but notice that this would seem so broad as to include the Diary of Anne Frank.
