[Chick-Fil-A’s] WinShape Foundations is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas," the chain is said to have written in a letter to Alderman Proco Moreno. The Chicago group added in a press release: "In meetings the company executives clarified that they will no longer give to anti-gay organizations, such as Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage.

Those aren’t the only two; per their own press release they’ve donated to these Christian Nationalist organizations.

What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

By commercialism, I’m aiming at a mix of spending a lot and sifting through bloated business models (e.g. this or that accessory/equipment, microtransactions, etc.). Feel like many can relate to this sort of commercial fatigue, and yet it creeps even into hobbies where one tries to unwind....

Lots of maker type hobbies do require an initial (and often ongoing) material purchase. Some are better than others at using what is at hand though.

Sewing/alterations is both a useful skill to have and allows you to repurpose old fabrics.

Art supplies can be quite expensive, but drawing materials are fairly ubiquitous. You likely have something within reach that you can practice with.

How graceful for you to let women make their own medical decisions as long as you think they have sufficient reason.

I think men should have their balls tied off with rubber bands unless I think their health is in danger; that way they can’t create babies to “murder.”

Better get that application in now, there’s a hell of a backlog.

Just like it’s not a man’s medical decision to have sex.

It’s why I’m taking the option off the table. Just follow the process and you’ll be fine. You can’t even feel it after a few days, from what I’ve read.

What sci-fi stories bring out a strong emphasis on family (self made or born into) to you? (lemmy.world)

For me I would say “The Expanse” is a huge one. If there was ever a self made family, the crew of the Rocinante is one of the best. The amount of time they spend together and how they congeal into life long partners and friends in the face of some truly awful events is really inspiring to me.

This argument (if it is not sarcastic, it’s hard to tell on the Internet) shows a fundamental misunderstanding of evolution and instead uses the language of social darwinism like “superior human”.

Evolution occurs in populations, not individuals. Furthermore, it doesn’t have a “goal,” it is just a natural process. Also, there are numerous ways different immune responses could be either advantageous or detrimental when combined with other variables.

I’m also not convinced that intelligence correlates to refusal to mask; as a counterpoint, smart people are also very good at justifying whatever position they already hold.

You won’t find most modern biologist using the phrase “survival of the fittest,” because it’s more confusing than illuminating. The preferred expression is “natural selection.”

Zombiepirate,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

It’s always about who is able to reproduce. Intelligence (not smart or dumb, just basic Intelligence) would lead you to take precautions during a pandemic.

I mean, I just gave a counterpoint to this. Smart people are good at justifying and sustaining their current beliefs. Surely you don’t think intelligence is a measure of how correct one’s beliefs are?

It actually broke the idiotcracy delimma with a chunk of the human population with poorer genes and lower intelligence were removed from selection.

This is just more social darwinist eugenicist pseudoscience.

Zombiepirate,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

By using debunked eugenicist arguments and supporting my point that smart people are good at justifying their false positions to themselves.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has used a system called Giant Oak Search Technology (GOST) to help the agency scrutinize social media posts, determine if they are “derogatory” to the U.S., and then use that information as part of immigration enforcement, according to a new cache of documents reviewed by 404 Media....

That seems really condescending to religious people.

Religion isn’t just believing things without reasons, and epistemology (faulty or otherwise) is not religion.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Monday that he is willing to resume serving as House speaker if enough of the Republicans who voted in favor of his ouster last week are open to his reinstatement.

“Whatever the conference wants, I will do,” McCarthy said during an interview on Hugh Hewitt’s syndicated radio program when asked about a possible return to the job.

McCarthy made the comment as the House Republican conference prepared to meet for the first time since Tuesday, when eight Republicans joined all Democrats present in voting for McCarthy’s removal. At that point, McCarthy said he would not run for a leadership role again.

At a news conference after his removal, McCarthy stated plainly: “I will not run for speaker again. I’ll have the conference pick somebody else.”

Many of the Republicans were upset with McCarthy for making a government funding deal with Democrats, tipping the scale to remove him from office.

Two other Republicans, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (La.) and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (Ohio), have launched bids to succeed McCarthy. It’s unclear whether either will be able to secure the votes needed to become speaker.

Asked by Hewitt if he would put himself forward to break a deadlock, McCarthy said: “Look, the conference has to make that decision.”

Without a full-time speaker, the House has been limited in its ability to operate. The violence that has erupted between Hamas and Israel over the weekend has underscored the limitations, as some members press for an aid package to Israel.

In his interview with Hewitt, McCarthy repeatedly emphasized Congress’s need to project strength and solidarity with Israel in the midst of the conflict. He also pointed out current matters he believes would have been handled differently had he remained in leadership.

“We would have gotten more of the intel,” McCarthy said, referencing the conflict. Under his watch, the former speaker asserted, the House on Monday would have put forth a resolution “to show the world we’re united, calling around to other world leaders to come to join.”

Furthermore, McCarthy said, under his leadership, the House would be looking at what ammunition and resources should be provided to Israel, evaluating sanctions against Iran and “going after any antisemitism that is happening not just on our college campuses, but directly in Congress itself as well.”

House Republicans plan to gather Monday night in a closed meeting to discuss where the conference goes next after McCarthy’s ouster as speaker. A candidate forum is scheduled Tuesday, followed by voting among House Republicans on Wednesday.

It’s unclear when the full House might vote on a new speaker.

Everything out of his mouth is a bad-faith accusation of Democrats. It’s what makes the donations flow and the cameras roll.

I don’t think he cares about policy at all, and I can’t understand why he would want the job. The only possibility I can fathom is that he wants to use it to make more money, because everyone hates the speaker. He’s going to be putting a target on his back, and the freedumb caucus will blame him for their stupidity. It’s not like they care who they rail against.

Maybe he thinks he can swing the whole party in the MAGA direction long term? Perhaps he’s not serious in wanting to win, and just using the opportunity to elevate his name for a Senate run later on? Whatever it is, it’s pretty silly.
