Vodulas,

Gates didn’t name it AFAIK. From wikipedia: “Allen came up with the original name of Micro-Soft, a portmanteau of microcomputer and software. Hyphenated in its early incarnations,”

Vodulas,

Ah, just a bad dick joke. Got ya.

Vodulas,

Amoral at worst. Public transportation shouldn’t have a fee at use. Tax the rich, invest in transport

Vodulas,

Ah, in that case, no that is also not stealing.

Vodulas,

Who is losing resources when you hop a turnstile?

Vodulas,

I think I figured out the disconnect here. Yes, hopping a turnstile is against the law. It is still not considered theft. It is called fare evasion, and it is more akin to a traffic violation. The reason I was confused, and why I assumed you meant morality, is that nobody is saying piracy isn’t against the law. The article never said that either.

Vodulas,

Wow, what a garbage article. Surprise surprise it’s origin was Fox News. The amount of sarcasm quotes is kind of impressive, though.

Gods forbid you have to take a look at your privileges then unpack what that means. Oh, and then you have to try and empathize with people that don’t have those same privileges. Scandalous.

Vodulas,

Looks like some gave you a good explanation. For the record, it didn’t seem like you posted it in bad faith, just that the writer clearly had an agenda. You probably can’t find any other articles mentioning it because it really isn’t much of a story, even though it is cool. The right wing is just trying to rile up their base

Vodulas,

Exactly. Right wingers are so afraid of admitting they have any privilege. Like, it doesn’t make you a bad person inherently

Vodulas,

The article is terrible, but OP clarified that English is not their first language and they did not catch the BS it conveyed.

Vodulas,

Todd in the Shadows went a little deeper on that. Mostly saying they were so fit and sexy that they inspired American fitness culture. Which is just not true.

Vodulas,

I have used the black 3.0. It is a little finicky. You have to put a gloss layer down, and make sure the paint is very well mixed. Overall it is good, just have to be very particular

Vodulas,

Stranded Deep is on Game Pass, so figured I’d give it a shot. Good so far. Kind of a mix of Raft and The Forest. It is a little rough to start since you pretty quickly need to travel to other islands to get materials and the starter raft is not fun to use. Once I built my own it really picked up though

Vodulas,

Kia has a pretty shit record with gas engines, but has been pretty good on the electric drivetrain. Hopefully they continue to make solid EVs. There need to be more lowish cost models out there.

Vodulas,

Is it possible to remove this comment? It brings nothing except a slur

Vodulas,

Thanks!

Vodulas,

I would suggest Vampyr or Wolfenstein: New Order as games set in the UK that would probably run great on an Ally with the bonus that they don’t support a TERF

Vodulas,

Do you have an article or something that says that? Everything I can find does not mention anyone else working on the game.

Vodulas,

I wouldn’t put much stock in hearsay. ConcernedApe has always been relatively quiet about what he is up to, even with Stardew.

Vodulas,

Am I weird for not having a backlog? I have games I haven’t played much of, usually because it didn’t click with me, but can’t thing any that I have never played.

Vodulas,

The bundles might be the thing. I rarely buy them, so don’t end up with games I know I won’t like. No shame, btw, I was just curious.

Vodulas,

BG3 uses D&D fifth edition rules, and the game is set in the Forgotten Realms, which is the official setting for D&D right now. That being said, that can be a lot to get into, and the BG3 tutorial is trash. For character creation you might just want to pick one of the origin characters. Creating a custom character can take a good long while, even if you know the rules already. The origin characters have most of the basic classes covered and will give you a feel for the game. If you want to change it up, there is a way to change your class and stats partway through act 1. That will at least get you in the game and playing, where there are tooltips that pop up.

Vodulas,

I’d argue that Alyx was HL3.

Vodulas,

Why only 2 minutes?

Vodulas,

I got ya. That makes sense. It is not a story sequel. I haven’t finished it yet, but it felt very much like the direction Valve is pushing and a story sequel to HL2 probably won’t happen.

Vodulas,

The last few years I have done sous vide turkey breast instead of a traditional roast bird. So much easier, so much tastier, and takes way less prep. Put the turkey in the bag, add some olive oil (or butter, but I get better results with olive oil), some salt, pepper, and herbs (I use sage, rosemary, and thyme), vacuum seal and put in a 140°F bath for at least 2.5 hours. I usually prep the day before and sous vide overnight, though. Never noticed any weird textures. Once you are ready to serve, get a cast iron skillet hot, and sear both sides of the breast in some butter. This is just for some good skin and nice maillard action. I also make a grave from the juice left in the bag, but that is entirely optional.

Vodulas,

Ooh, smoking is also delicious. I am usually in charge of the protein because nobody else wants to deal with it, and everyone has loved the sous vide. Makes me the defacto turkey person.

Vodulas,

There is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact that is close to succeeding.

…wikipedia.org/…/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate…

Kind of a workaround but with the same result

Vodulas,

No doubt there will be a legal battle, but there are 6 states with pending votes, and those six would be enough to cross the 270 electoral vote threshold. The legal battle will hopefully bring it into greater public consciousness.

Tipping culture - what do you tip? (thetakeout.com)

Here in WA state, the minimum wage per hour is $15.74 (higher in some areas). Tipping culture says 20%, but that’s generally to support lower paid waitstaff in areas that can pay less than minimum wage by employers. Where/What are you tipping and what kind of service would you expect for a 20% tip?

Vodulas,

Just because minimum wage is high, doesn’t mean it is a living wage. Here is a great breakdown of costs in Washington

nlihc.org/oor/state/wa

With wild inflation and general CoL increases, long gone are the days of the $15/hr being livable. As far as tipping culture goes, it is fucking bullshit. Just pay your staff and increase menu prices as needed. That being said, changing the culture around tipping will take a sea change by either making minimum wage a living wage based on inflation or UBI. Or both. Not tipping because it is bullshit only hurts the people who have the most to lose.

Vodulas,

This is an oversimplification, but do you think drugs don’t feel fucking fantastic? Like, how would they hook you if there wasn’t something about them on the first dose? Facebook does it by dopamine hits and confirmation bias, but the pathways are not far off.

Vodulas,

Sorry, had a long day and parsed your comment as the opposite of what you meant.

Vodulas,

FO76 had a rocky start for sure, but they have made a ton of updates. It is easily better then Starfield now. If you compared them release to release then FO76 would be worse, but I think they are comparing current state.

Vodulas,

They literally explain it in the article.

The platform uses the term “Auto-generated” since the videos are not uploaded directly by users. “YouTube auto-generates videos at scale [which it terms Art Tracks] for audio tracks delivered by record labels and distributors. Artists have to submit the recording, artwork and metadata to create Art Tracks,” a YouTube spokesperson wrote in an email statement to Bellingcat.

Vodulas,

Looks like you commented a couple minutes before me, but it was two hours since your initial comment, so I did not expect you to find it at the same time.

Vodulas,

The point of the article is that there is not enough content moderation on these types of videos. Bellingcat calls them auto-generated because that is what YouTube calls them (they highlight that is several screenshots). They showed real harm that comes from the statements and sentiments in the songs that are being uploaded. That is not concern trolling, that is pointing out an inadequate policy that needs to be addressed.

Vodulas,

Sure, but my take away was that it is a particular issue in the auto-generated videos because they are often sent whole discographies from the labels, so they are getting uploaded en-masse.

Vodulas,

That is such a great book too. David Arora also does a field guide called Mushrooms Demystified. The cover is a lot more what you would expect for a mushroom field guide, though

Vodulas,

I’d add Wandavision to the list of shows with their own style. Mando kind of turned generic after the first season too. Obi Wan was very generic, but had some cool scenes. It could have been so much more, but honestly I didn’t really see the need for the show at all. Same with Book of Boba Fett.

As far as games go, Fallen Order was great. Need to play Jedi Survivor, but I’ve heard they improved a lot of stuff in it. With how they’ve removed creative focus on most of their properties, I don’t think a Disney run studio would have put out Fallen Order or Survivor though.

Vodulas,

When “Tom Waits - What’s He Building in There” is about Jeff Bezos

Vodulas,

I am by no means an expert, but that could be water damage. Are the boards there more raised than the others? If not, the previous owner may have sanded it down and stained over the top.

Vodulas,

There are so many good EV options out there. Pretty much something for most folks. Tesla gets credit for pushing EVs into the limelight, but I’m not really sure why you would get one today with all the things you mentioned.

Vodulas,

That is really terrible. They have always had a bad reputation in the repair department, but that is ridiculous. Seems like they have been getting worse, not better. Hopefully you get your car back soon. Hope they at least provided a loaner?

Vodulas,

Ugh, what a shit show.

Vodulas,

Yes they did, but not every car can be retrofit, and it is not a simple process. If you drive a car until the wheels fall off, trying to do that would probably be inefficient and prohibitively expensive. Plus that motor has to come from somewhere, so do the batteries that power it. You can’t just throw a motor in and call it good.

Vodulas, (edited )

I don’t know about a specific one, but i tried via Bing with OK results. It mostly pulled from one source that had 72 recipes, and then a couple from sources it didn’t link to in the body. There were links to the sites used at the bottom, but you would have to search for the specific recipes.

sl.bing.net/dI2wnTP2lUW

Edit: Well crap. Apparently that link will only work in MS Edge

Vodulas,

There are lots of VR headsets out there

Elon Musk demanded a cameo in Cyberpunk 2077 while wielding a 200 year old gun: "I was armed but not dangerous" (www.pcgamer.com)

While Elon’s then-partner Grimes was recording her part in the game as cyborg popstar Lizzy Wizzy, the erratic tech billionaire turned up with an antique firearm to “insist” on being included in the game. “The studio guys were like sweating,” Grimes is quoted as saying. Musk adds “I told them that I was armed but not...

Vodulas,

Taking aspects of language from someone who does not truly understand why,

That is why you tell them why. “Hey, did you know that word is from the eugenics movement?” or “Hey here is why what you just said is racist.” Saying that is akin to getting a part of your brain cut out is super extreme.

Telling someone that their actions which are fundamental to their being are hurtful to you, and they need to change, is in fact hurtful to them.

If using harmful words is fundamental to your being, you have a lot of other things to work on. Saying that you can’t tell someone that they hurt you because it hurts them is some real victim blaming BS.

It’s not their fault how they were raised, and how their experiences have shaped them, no matter how horrible someone might be.

I never said it was, but they need to know what they do is harmful before they can start to unpack that.

But if we embrace the diversity they add to society,

No.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance

Only the individual can decide to change themself for the better.

Very true, but the first step is knowing you need to change.

And even then, it’s a life long journey,

Yup, and long journeys start with a single step.

and often only minimal changes are possible.

I would say sometimes, but what I find more true with the people I know, is that once the dam is broken, they start to look at the other things in their life that they can be better in and a cascade effect happens.

So, we should be celebrating the efforts they put forth, not condemning them for the things they don’t have the capacity to change.

I think this is where the meat of the rub lies. Telling someone what they are doing is hurtful is not a condemnation. People tend to take it that way and get defensive, but even the best of us has some gaps in their knowledge. Especially in colonized parts of the world. Being made aware of them is not an insult. It means someone cares enough to bring it to your attention and thinks that you don’t actually want to say harmful things, and they believe you want to be better.

Sorry for the wall of text, but there was a lot to unravel there.
