TrontheTechie,

For how expensive that is it better be fucking great.

I don’t mind shelling out for nicer ingredients, especially with sugars like honey or getting real maple syrup.

TrontheTechie,

This is why I don’t fuck guys who “don’t pay attention to politics”.

That means one thing, and it isn’t that they are blissfully unaware of the day to day happenings in their town, county, state, region, country, or planet of residence.

TrontheTechie,
TrontheTechie,

Yeah, that’s another one of those.

I’ve never had anyone who said politics and religion aren’t good conversation actually be worth having those conversations with. Everyone else from every other walk of life has no problem having a nuanced conversation about that stuff, it’s only ever WASPs that get all indignant and force everyone else to stop talking.

One of my coworkers had asked something about trans people and bathrooms, and I started to say my piece, but mid sentence the owner comes back like “under no circumstances are you allowed to have this conversation here”.

Oh yeah, so threatening to say that I don’t care who is in what bathroom if they don’t do anything that violates another guests bodily autonomy.

So controversial and brave.

We’ve spent plenty of time talking about the different racist inspired restaurants in the area and the deplorable dog whistle specials they offer, never cared about that offending anyone.

The restaurant in question was the MoonCricket Grille, and they were offering $0.49 Bud lights after the outrage about them in honor of the 49 who died at the Pulse nightclub.

I hate this place…

TrontheTechie,

I had to buy a printer recently. I intentionally went through all the information i could to find out which manufacturers pull this trick and bought their competitor instead.

TrontheTechie,

I didn’t have a wide array of choices, as I had a selection of printers in front of me at a brick and mortar store, but I went with the Brother HL-L2325DW. They offer a subscription (I don’t mind an optional convenience and monetization method) but they don’t disable your printer or force you to buy it.

It came with a full sized toner cartridge at about 3,000 pages compared to the “demo cartridge” most printers will give you with the unit, and it worked out of the Box with CUPS and Linux, and was supported by Brother for Windows and Mac.

Wildly enough there was a Linux utility too from Brother, but I didn’t need it.

TrontheTechie,

I was just trying to remember when the old school RuneScape community got off fandom.

Fandom wouldn’t let them nuke the wiki because they claimed to own the IP that was the crowdsourced information that filled it.

Fuck fandom, i refuse to use them.

TrontheTechie,

Tell me the irony isn’t lost on anyone else that this website article about users being frustrated by min maxing profits and inorganic design language is designed exactly like the kind of site that they are talking about.

TrontheTechie,

I originally tried posting a picture, but I think my instance dropped support for right now because of the recent attacks.

Edit: I got the picture posted for those who don’t want phone cancer. https://i.imgur.com/crPuuIJ.jpg

TrontheTechie,

It goes into even more detail than that.

OSRS wiki should be a case study on good documentation policies.

TrontheTechie,

Thank you for the suggestion, thankfully the imgur hosting was built into memmy so I had no hoops to jump through, basically just click the image button and pick the image.

I’ll certainly implement that when I have more granular control of the process though.

TrontheTechie,

Brave browser is the best solution I’ve found for my mobile workflow. Doesn’t help when the app opens the website link using the native in app browser, though.

https://i.imgur.com/Aj8vev9.pngHere’s what my actual mobile web browser displays

TrontheTechie,

Backfired on them, the whole OSRS community was intentionally searching for things in google and using the “official” wiki results to bury fandom, then the game devs themselves added a wiki button into the game.

I don’t care what their rationale was, it’s to claim you own intellectual property that other people wrote for you. If I write a story, and post an excerpt to someone else’s website that doesn’t immediately confer copyright or IP ownership of that to the website owner.

Even more so when the information that is your IP is copied word for word from another companies IP and iterated on by a third party to qualify for fair use.

TrontheTechie,

I’m certain that Jagex wasn’t necessarily doing that out of the kindness of their hearts. RuneScape community sites have had a history of advertisements that border on malware at worst, are paid phishing attempts at best, and benevolently full of grey market account services and real world trading platforms.

Best case scenario was them hosting the platform to protect the integrity of their game, and the community.

Not to distract from the good move that it was, of course.

TrontheTechie,

No, the scandal they got caught up in was basically if you typed “Coinbase” into the search bar it would suggest the autocomplete response for their affiliate link to Coinbase, it wasn’t limited to just coinbase however, and it wasn’t a forced redirect, just didn’t pass the sniff test, and while that doesn’t mean it’s bad or malicious, that also doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good.

It just happens to be the best solo solution on the application layer that works well with other complimentary services on other layers to fit my good enough criteria for now based on the hardware I currently have available to me.

When I get a different phone (read as migrated off of Apple [current] and Google [past] phone OS’s) I will reevaluate my mobile opsec and most likely chose from the other solutions available on the platform of my choice.

George Jetson had an 17 minute work day with 2 hours a week and could afford a house, a hover car, a robot maid, enough money for his wife to spend the day shopping on top of household needs, enough extra to take care of a dog, and STILL enough leftover to allow elroy to be involved in extracurricular activities and to take the family on a vacation to the moon.

I worked two jobs at 50-60 hours a week and could only afford to rent a 1 bed apartment with almost nothing left over.

I wish I had came of age in that period of post war optimism that inspired that cartoon.

Edit: the Jetson’s takes place in the year 2062, we still have ~38 years or so to ensure our children can achieve that

TrontheTechie,

At that time it was the state of Minnesota, and I was working as a cook.

TrontheTechie,

Addiction, medically at least, has to do with compulsion, not frequency. A person who has a cigar on the weekends, or a single cigarette at night after the kids go to bed, isn’t necessarily doing it compulsively, or to a degree that it negatively effects their life (aside from the whole smoking thing). Now does that in and of itself mean you SHOULD go do that? I would say no, especially with alcohol, nicotine, opiates, cocaine, etc. but would anyone from a medical standpoint say they were an addict? Not if they knew what they were talking about.

That brings us to the flip side of that, now if you WERE the kind of person that did it on the weekends with enough frequency your brain will start to desensitize to the dopamine dump, and start to offload that behavior to your prefrontal cortex, making it a subconscious action, and eventually lead to that compulsion that we call addiction. This effect is multiplied if you allow yourself to be distracted while you do the thing, as you are strengthening the subconscious pathways of that action.

Anyway, I think the middle path would probably be the best. No need to completely abstain 100% from EVERYTHING, and no reason to let ANYTHING become a subconscious habit that controls us without our understanding.

TL:DR Asceticism = bad extreme indulgence = bad Allow yourself to be human, but be ultra mindful of your human condition

TrontheTechie,

From what I’m getting, you see the end point of major goals other people had, and you wonder how you could ever do anything like that.

What you need to do is turn that into a main quest line. In a video game (most of the time) you don’t start with “kill the big boss and save the realm” but every little thing progresses you to that point. The first thing you get as a goal is something stupid simple and abstract like Equip your sword and block some arrows. Eventually all the little side tangents culminate in “Kill the Boss, Save the realm”.

So try to use that principle in your life. Ask yourself a question, what do I need to do right now to do “XYZ”, come up with two things that would help you accomplish it. Now ask yourself, of those two things, is there anything I can do within the next 5 minutes to make that happen. If your answer is no (let’s be honest it most likely is), split each of those tasks into two things that will help you accomplish that minigoal.

Eventually you will have broken the tasks in two enough times you can find your “Equip your sword, Dodge some arrows” and start crawling your way up that quest tree.

TrontheTechie, (edited )

Don’t bite off more than you can chew.

If you need some perspective shift on habit formation I greatly suggest giving this video a watch.

I’ve tried to stop or cut back on my drinking for years, I’d always slip up and then feel bad about it, then slip even further in the trap.

That video itself changed the way I was viewing my situation and has literally changed my life organically in some short order.

No guilt, frustration, shame, anger, just acceptance.

Be kind to yourself

TrontheTechie,

How disgusting, the fact that such an affront to the functioning of western civilization is celebrated here is really telling. I can’t believe that something so vile could be accepted here, even as a meme.

I mean, the bitch established a poll tax calculated based on how many people live with you, adding an unfair undue burden on working folks disenfranchising them of their rights and further consolidating the power of the people into the hands of wealthy folks.

That caricature of a villain stole milk from children, quite literally.

Nice fox though.

TrontheTechie,

Not nearly tin foil hat enough /s

TrontheTechie,

I prefer “I always had the feeling I could never be the villain cause the villain in the films is always back lit”.

TrontheTechie,

Memmy doesn’t load my profile page :(

TrontheTechie,

I can login, was actually replying from Memmy to see if it got fixed. My other account loads the profile, but this one on this instance doesn’t for some reason, and while I like my blahaj.zone account, I figured it’d be nice to see some of the other stuff and choose for myself what I do or don’t want to see, hence the infosec.pub account that Memmy doesn’t show the profile for.

Though frankly, most of what I see on here that’s different is like exploding-heads garbage, so it’s not like I was really missing out on anything with blahaj.zone.

TrontheTechie,

Thanks for sharing your fix, unfortunately the username is all lowercase in Memmy, so that isn’t my issue per se.

TrontheTechie,

Even when I disabled notifications in windows I’d still get random windows error noises at all hours of the night, and when I checked it in the morning 9/10 times it was some “Try the web browser that was made with windows in mind! Open Edge!” Bullshit.

If I was ever going to try Edge it isn’t because you woke me up last night to tell me to.

TrontheTechie,

Yeah, I wanted to add a thing about how I’m much more satisfied with Linux because it actually respects my configurations and I don’t have to go digging through 20 years of settings apps, control panels, and permissions dialogues to find out why even though I’d disabled sleep, it kept putting my computer to sleep despite the fact I was running a basic server off it. Literally be in the middle of steaming a movie or something and it puts itself to sleep, wtf.

TrontheTechie,

There was one night I was drunk As all hell, I can’t remember if I was on YouTube or Facebook or what, but this video came on of this guy trying to find out what happens if you eat nothing but corn, how does it come out. Turns out the first time he tried it, he forgot to not chew, so it came out as poop, but the second run he swallowed it all whole (supposedly) and had a paper plate full of slightly off color corn.

So yeah, thanks for that memory.

TrontheTechie,

Or you mistimed the Balmer Peak managed to do an ungodly amount of progress, forgot to comment in any meaningful way, and the next day try to go through all the changes you did and figure out what the Fuck your were on about, and how this thing works when it seems it really shouldn’t.

TrontheTechie,

You have it to sell at this point, especially if it’s an apple
