I wish the Democrats in the US were less willfully ignorant about firearms so they’d pass less stupid and ineffectual legislation out of fear and/or pandering.
Every time California passes an “assault weapons ban” that targets a specific ergonomic feature (pistol grips, removable magazines, what the hell ever they’re focusing on now) and gun manufacturers find a work around before the bill even comes into effect, I just roll my eyes.
At this point I’m forced to assume it’s purely performative.
ForgottenWeapons and InRangeTV are the only channels I still subscribe to, because they’re not constantly bitching about gun laws and parroting conservative talking points.
The one time I’ve actually seen Ian make a statement about pending legislation, and he’s coming at it from a very respectable angle, saying basically “this law is poorly worded and over-inclusive and I think it’s going to cause some serious issues”: youtube.com/shorts/aMHGtM051jc?si=nvB2q2vktbwBuUL…
I mean, it’s exactly what I was talking about. Politicians pushing terrible firearms legislation out of willful ignorance.
All it does is annoy and inconvenience lawful gun owners, and push the center-right further towards the MAGA crowd.
Do teeth count as part of the skeleton? If you’ve lost teeth do you only have 99% of a skeleton left?
According to this, bones don’t start forming until the sixth or seventh week of gestation, so does the fetus technically not have a skeleton before then?
According to Knopfler, he was in New York City and had visited an appliance store. At the back of the store was a wall of televisions which were all tuned to MTV. Knopfler said that standing next to him, watching the TVs, there was a male employee, dressed in a baseball cap, work boots, and a checkered shirt, who was delivering boxes. As they were watching MTV, as Knopfler recalled, the man came out with lines such as, “What are those, Hawaiian noises?.. That ain’t workin’,” etc. Knopfler then requested a pen to write some of these lines down, and eventually put them to music.
“More than half of the websites in the study accepted passwords with six characters or less, with 75% failing to require the recommended eight-character minimum. Around 12% of had no length requirements, and 30% did not support spaces or special characters.”
It’s 2023 and I still see signup forms that are like “must have at least one of each: number, lowercase letter, uppercase character, special character (but not , . " & / + < > {} [] )”
That, plus no single sign-on (privacy issues aside) and login flow design so bad that password managers don’t know what the fuck is going on, and it’s no wonder password security is still a huge issue.
The company’s website quotes a storage density of 3.5 kWh/kg and a storage system taking up 3 cubic meters beving able to store 100,000 kWh: www.photoncycle.com/technology
I tried to find the patent but it sounds like the application process isn’t complete yet.
These are the kind of claims you hear from a startup seeking its next round of funding. I’d take it with a huge grain of salt.
Conversely, “Verified” does not necessarily mean “runs at a consistent or pleasant framerate.”
I bought my Deck in part to start working through the massive mountain of unplayed games in my library because I spend enough of my day sitting at a computer as it is.
But a lot of the titles I had in mind, despite being Verified, can barely run at a consistent FPS in the mid-20s even at minimum settings. The Outer Worlds, Outer Wilds, Wolfenstein II to name a few. Baldur’s Gate runs okay, but chugs battery despite looking absolutely terrible with DSR turned to max performance.
I’ve tried streaming games from my PC but with mixed results. It’s great for performance and battery life but it’s not good at recovering from dropouts in connectivity.
I live in an apartment complex with pretty crowded airwaves so it’s hard to get a good connection sometimes, even just through the wall between my bedroom and living room.
Any hiccup in the connection leads to an immediate desync and I lose video completely, but it seems incapable of detecting and recovering from this. The only fix I’ve found is to restart the stream, either by restarting the game outright or putting the Deck to sleep so it disconnects and then waking it up and reconnecting to the running game.
I love the concept of the Deck and I realize that this is the kind of stuff to expect as an early adopter, but its performance and usability was definitely oversold.
If anyone hasn’t checked out the newer Iron Maiden albums, I highly recommend it. I’ve talked to a surprising number of people who liked old Maiden but haven’t kept up.

You don’t have to dump it undiluted in the ocean. You can mix it with an outgoing treated wastewater stream if your system doesn’t recycle it (or if you do recycle it then you have less need for more fresh water so your desalination plant can be smaller), or disperse it over a larger area for a gentler salinity gradient.
The real problem, as with anything, is the cost that would add. But if this technology can produce water for a negligible ongoing cost, that might be worthwhile.
This Practical Engineering video gives a great overview of the challenges and some of the existing solutions with desalination, including how to get rid of concentrated saltwater waste (in the context of reverse osmosis desalination, which this tech is kind of a hybrid of reverse osmosis and distillation).
I was looking for someone else to mention Futurama. The new season is just so mediocre. You hit the nail on the head, they’re leaning so hard on social commentary but most of the references are already dated (Bitcoin mining, lol) and in general it’s just rather cringey. I’ve yet to hear one joke that actually had me bust out laughing, and the writers seem to have forgotten the subtlety that made Futurama stand out from other animated sitcoms.
Billy West sounds like he’s lost his voice and it feels like the rest of the cast are phoning in their performances a lot of the time. And what’s with the release schedule? A Christmas episode in August? I remember there being delays but I don’t understand why they would rush to get it out, they had so long to get it right and they still messed it up.
Oh yeah, and what the hell happened to Zoidberg’s girlfriend when he was all alone on Christmas? Are they just completely retconning season 10 or what? I don’t remember if they said exactly how far back the time button sent them.
