The own OS and preinstalled app in a Mobile are extracting your data. This you can only avoid to root it to be able to desinstalar them, but this cause that you must made the security updates by yourself, in rooted phones it isn’t automatic. Than use only apps from F-Droid and not from the Store, install an paid AV and use VPN. Only in this way it is somewhat more secure. Better if you use some Linux Mobile.
10 million is just an arbitrary number he will not honor when it is reached.
Valve has sold ‘multiple millions’(source) already. The 10 million will probably be reached soon. Not even to mention all the Linux users.
And frankly it’s not a him problem. Nearly every dev refuses to release on Linux (and Mac) because of its small user base.
Yes it is. He does not have to release for Linux. He just needs to allow the anti cheat to run on Proton. This is a simple config change not more. Fortnite will probably run fine on Proton.
If i run X.org i dont need to modify my kernel or its configs, it just works well (well, well for X.org) out of box. With wayland its the other story. I need to enable nvidia-dkms module and much other stuff to should be configured. There is a whole page about enabling hyprland on nvidia....
Hello friends. I’d like to ask if any of you knows when/if Debian will finally include the nvidia-535 proprietary driver. It’s kind of a pain in the ass to install it manually and keep it updated. Thanks!
I never had huge problems with rolling release distros and Nvidia but recently got a AMD card and boi… Everything (hardware acceleration etc) basically worked out of the box with a very simple Arch installation… Never again going with Nvidia on Linux.
I.e. how malware could easily catch your Sudo password without root access.
Peeps, bad news, Linux is damn insecure.
By simply placing an alias in your bashrc they could already grab your sudo password.
Another bad news, this Windows “okay” Button without any password is actually more secure.
In other words: a compromised system at the User level can easily compromised at the admin level if there are no additional checks/measures in place. Same for Windows. Just change the link to a Programm you commonly need the press OK to to you maleware. Profit.
Mostly misdirected anger from two categories — Arch purists who balk at the notion of someone modding their beloved distro, and newbs who blame Manjaro for issues they create themselves and they would have on any Arch-based distro.
Nope not at all. The built in and by Manjaro maintained packagemanager pamac bricks systems. Has not bricked mine since i use pacman instead.
The packages are just the arch packages delayed by a few days which makes it incompatible with the (by default enabled an encouraged to use) AUR.
The AUR doesn’t assume arch packages, if the package your aur script wants isn’t in your repo then the package simply fails to update/install.
Edit: This is true even for Arch linux, as the Aur package might be out of date.
The problem is not the package. It is the packages Version. If you have for example an application that depends on .net 7.0 and arch updates it to the latest 8.0 then the AUR usually gets updated soon as well. Now the AUR pqckage depends on the newer 8.0 Version while manjaro still has the 7.0 version. The programm now does no longer start on manjaro.

Do not trust it to be lifetime and do not trust it to be e2e.
Always use your own OSS encryption on top of it and never trust it to be lifetime. They can not promise you to be lifetime since they can not promise they are still in business in 5 years.
In the last couple of months I have noticed an increasing trend of supplying me search results that are completely unrelated to the current query and tie back to my location or previous searches. I can say this with a high degree of certainty this is without a doubt beyond the 100th instance this has happened....
I have still the same good results in ddg, no matter what device or browser. I have noticed that they have some location bias when ddg (and any other search engine i have tried) has non good results globaly but good resulta locally.
Still better then anything i have tested. Just because there are minor anomalies i will stick with them.
Not sponsored, I just genuinely like the product. Adguard doesn’t require manifests because it works outside the browser.
But trivial to circumvent. Just change the origin url from (for example) ‘ads.google.com’ to ‘google.com’ and you no longer can block ads based on DNS blocking.
While it is now not a hugh thread it will eventually happen when they manage to eradicate adblockers in the browser.
The amazing thing about those are that they are halfing the rebuild time. With large drives you get rebuild time of over 24 hours which is actually frightening.
Setup is a one time thing and yes you need to be carefull about it but i bet software support will come as soon as those get more mainstream.
You would think ppl on Lemmy are somewhat more able to read, understand and interpret data like published by backblaze but it seems like they are just as everywhere blind because of a onetime experience 10 years ago (3tb constallation drivr by Seagate)
Hello linix@lemmy, I got fixed on the idea of replacing my iPad with a 2in1 like the thibkpad X13 for uni since I use the keyboard with my iPad a lot. The thinkpad yogas (at least the models i worked with) work just fine with Linux (Except maybe the fingerprint reader but i never bothered to get it working).
When you need a software recommendation for handwriting/annotating then i strongly recommend xournal++. Imho the best there is and i prefer it over any windows application (onenote sucks balls). Have used it for 5-6 years now.

I keep reading about podman, yet it doesm’t FEEL as mature to me as docker for a normal user like me. What’s your opinion? Did you already switch or do you keep waiting for … for what? When will you switch?
When i have port 8888 not allowed on my firewall then no other program should ‘open’ that port. If i map a port with the syntax ‘8888:8888’ exaclty that happens with docker. Not with podman.
Also this is the default syntax you will find in any guide and docs there is.
To prevent this happening with docker you will have to specify the localhost with ‘127.0.0.1:8888:8888’
When you check the internet for this subject you will notice that this behavior catches a lot of ppl by surpirise.
Just alone the fact that podman, a drop in replacement for docker, does implement this in another way proofs that it is bad practice to implement the way docker did.
If you use 8888:8888 it means you want the port to be open on the host’s external interface
I am sorry. That is just bs. When i install apache and start the service and let it listen on port 80 and 443 i still have to add the firewall rule to allow it. This is the default behavior of every other programm.
I am following NymphCast since the beginning and while it is still promising but beta software at best with limited functionality, by choosing the language ‘AngleScript’ theyhavee shot themself in the foot to.get new devs onboard.
Oh yeah. Did not bother to look for OSS implementations. But seemingly there must be a problem with miracast. Otherwise i could not explain the bad adoption.
Only thing i can say that there is a need for a widly available/supported open ‘cast’ server and client software out there.

People was using Weston with Intel Laptops as it used less power many years ago. Samsung was using Fedora+Wayland for Watches and TV’s i was thinking Arch or Fedora for a new AMD laptop?
I would call this actually ignorance. There are other languages then english. Other languages have (even with the roman alphabet) have special characters that are not supported without punycode. For example âäàáßœöō. Workaround exists for a lot of those but without punycode you would be leftout when younhave on of those character ind you name, cityname, companyname.
Punycode has is problems in the URL and if jt is just the point that not every piece of software understands it but it allows for more domain names to choose from when youn have a special character in you family name.

Every month or so all my devices lose internet and the only way to connect them all back is to disconnect them from the DNS server that Pihole is running....
Simple: Privacy. The DNS Server of you choosing sees every single domain you are visiting.
Having a own DNS Server allows you to hide varies queries from big DNS providers.
Additional you gain shorter latencies for cached request if you have set it up right.
AND when you have local services you probably have a horizon splitting DNS anyway so setting up a pihole vs something like DNSmasq is not much hassle anyway.
Which is why NextDNS allows you to decide if DNS requests get logged or not, for how long, on which country, and with encryption.
You have to trust that statement and company since you can’t verify it.
Hardly relevant nowadays.
With the hundreds of DNS requests that a modern websites requires, it is more relevant then ever. For browsing DNS latency is for more important then dowload or upload speed.
