My biggest concern with Epic is their insistence on kernel level anti-cheat which is just ridiculous overkill and probably being used as spyware let's be honest. They have many ties to China's Tencent which has a 40% stake in the company and is known to basically just be an extension of the Chinese government.

There's also the very odd fact that just having the Epic Games Store open in the background will deplete your laptops battery life by up to 20%. Is it just horribly optimized and uses all that battery even when idling, or is it doing something nefarious in the background? We don't know.

As for exclusives, they have bought exclusives that were mostly crowd funded from the start which is quite the kick in the teeth to the early investors that helped get the project off the ground. And there were even some exclusives that were already listed for pre-order through Steam, forcing everyone to need to get a refund.

Plus, any good will that they've purchased so far is just in service of making a good name for themselves. They've been losing around $400 million per year since 2019 just to bring in new users. They're going to suddenly turn around and start being cut-throat as soon as they think they can.

They are not consumer friendly, they want to dictate trends in gaming. Valve is already the king of that throne and they're fairly benevolent and have pushed trends that are good for gaming and consumers overall. I have serious doubt that Epic would be anywhere near as good for gaming as Valve has been if they should actually become profitable, and an industry leader. Especially when it's projected that they won't be profitable until 2027, which means they'll need to recoup their investment of nearly $3.2 billion since 2019.

I don't think I have that one, but I have a bunch of them! They're my prized possessions and it's such a delight to hang them up every Christmas :D

I was and continue to be shocked that there are conservative Star Trek fans. I just can't wrap my head around how they justify it. It's very clearly painting socialism and left leaning ideas as the universally correct ideals which will lead us to a utopia.

TLDW: James Somerton is a gay man and a YouTube content "creator" who has recently been outed as a plagiarist by Hbomberguy and Todd In The Shadows. He primarily steals content from other lesser known queer content creators which just makes his plagiarism all the more insidious.

He has also strangely been proven to be guilty of spreading pseudohistory in which he changes details of historic events.

He has also been accused of a Patreon scam by making a (now deleted) video pleading with his subscribers on YouTube that he can't make ends meet and he'll have to stop making videos if he doesn't get more Patreon subscribers. He got 1200 new patrons from that video. He apparently immediately purchased an $8000 camera afterwards which people describe as a "bizarre purchase" for someone who was just in financial dire straits. Also, there was no evidence of him having suffered a drop in subscribers that he claimed was the reason for his financial situation.

He has also been accused by YouTuber and Nebula creator Jessie Gender of transphobia. She says that James Somerton has gone out of his way to erase any queer content creators who were not cisgender gay men, and that he intentionally misgenders other transgender content creators constantly.

It seems like the inciting incident for all of these YouTube and Nebula content creators to go after him was James' application to become a Nebula content creator. I suppose they started gathering evidence to provide against his membership and they ended up finding so much that they created these videos and levied formal accusations.

Here's a slightly more in-depth read from Wikitubia for anyone interested in reading further: https://youtube.fandom.com/wiki/James_Somerton#Controversies

Guys, it's not one or the other. We can have trees and algae tanks. Trees can still offer all of the benefits they do like shade and beauty while algae tanks can be used to increase fresh oxygen. Algae is much better at absorbing CO2 than trees and providing clean air which is a big problem in a busy city.

Kind of reminds me of the Rick and Morty episode with the night people. When they take over, they find out that being in charge sucks.

To those that are saying they don't see a problem with this mod. Let me put it to you this way. Instead of a mod that turned one gay woman into a straight man what if it turned one black character into a white character?

There literally was a mod like that in Stardew Valley that turned Demetrius into a white character, and it was rightfully deleted from Nexus mods. If someone has that much of a problem with a character being a different race, sex, gender, or sexual identity then they're clearly bigoted no matter what they say to the contrary.

It's gay erasure, and it's bigotry, plain and simple.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Maybe having to go through that hardship of rejecting someone because you're just not into something fundamental and unchangeable about them such as their gender representation will make you have empathy and understanding for queer people and the struggle they face daily where only about 1 in 10 people they're attracted to will be attracted back.

Exposure to queer media helps build understanding and empathy. Erasing it erodes that understanding and empathy.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Having to go through that hardship of rejecting someone because you're just not into something fundamental and unchangeable about them such as their gender representation will make people learn to have empathy and understanding for queer people and the struggle they face daily where only about 1 in 10 people they're attracted to will be attracted back.

Exposure to queer media helps build understanding and empathy. Erasing it erodes that understanding and empathy.

You still have the privilege of hitting on 90% of people you're attracted to IRL or in games reciprocating your advances, so it's not really that big a deal to have 1 interaction end in rejection.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

There have been multiple times that I've been friendly with women and they'll randomly blurt out "I have a boyfriend/husband/partner". This is a universal feeling, and it makes the game all the more realistic that it includes that. Unfortunately it had to happen with a gay character so people are able to toe the line of homophobia and say that they just didn't like the rejection.

I would be fine with a mod that simply removed the harsh rejection. It's not great for queer exposure and empathy building, but I wouldn't call that outright homophobia. It's lightyears ahead of turning the gay woman into a man.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

This issue isn't really about equality, it's about exposure and building empathy. The more people are exposed to the plight that queer people face every day, the more likely they are to build an empathetic connection to them, to care about queer issues, to see it through their eyes, and to understand and support them through it.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Because rejecting hateful content and making it fringe and inaccessible is for the good of everyone. Exposure to race, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation based issues makes everyone more aware and empathetic of the issues that other people face, and that's a good thing.

And yes, both of those mod ideas you proposed would be just as bad or worse than this one and should also be deleted from Nexus mods.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

It does spread hate by erasing a queer character from a game. It spreads hate by shielding the exact people who should be exposed to queer people and learn to be empathetic towards their struggles from it.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Increasing the gayness is one thing, removing all of it is queer erasure which is bigotry. Gay people face rejection from 9 out of 10 potential partners every single day. If even one person changes their mind about gay people because they were forced to be rejected by this gay character and it opened their eyes, then that's a huge win for civilized society and equality.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

It will still be fringe and more inaccessible, so only people who are deeply ingrained in their bigotry and probably have no chance of opening their eyes and having empathy will seek it out, which is a huge win for everyone else.

It's pretty stupid and short sighted to hate foreigners. Every developed country has a declining birth rate right now and an inverted pyramid age graph where there are far more elderly people than young people. The only way countries can keep up their current level of productivity is by allowing immigration. Ban immigration and you basically guarantee your country is going to suffer economically.

Of course the racists think that this is a "white genocide" which is obviously bullshit. The entire Earth is on a trend of declining populations. It's actually estimated that we very likely will hit a peak population of 11 billion and then it will start to drop dramatically and could drop down as far as 6 billion by 2100.

Here's a wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projections_of_population_growth#/media/File:World_Population_Prospects.svg
And a nice picture from the same article showing the trend: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0e/World_Population_Prospects.svg/1280px-World_Population_Prospects.svg.png

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Okay, I chose the wrong word, but it's semantics, I'm pretty sure you know what I mean by the word "productivity". There are already plenty of countries where there are jobs going unfilled for months or even years. Teams stretched thin and expected to do the same amount of work as 2 or even 3 people would have done in the past, and it's only going to get worse if immigration is limited because developed countries currently depend on immigration to fill the gaps.

You're right that it's totally unsustainable to depend on immigration to fill gaps in your labour pool. The hope many governments seem to be hinging on is that this crisis will rectify itself as the bloated elderly population of the pyramid starts to die off. There definitely needs to be systemic change, but that takes time. In the short term, there are plenty of immigrants that can fill those roles and keep your country's economy strong in the short term. Countries that fail to recognize that are going to have a rough time.

Of course there are plenty of other reasons that immigration should be accepted. I just figure conservatives are really the only ones who oppose it and they tend to think in terms of the bottom line and their own selfish interests, so I thought I would frame it in a way that would appeal to them.

I just started playing Amnesia: Rebirth and the opening cut scene gave me such unexpected euphoria. Take a look, the euphoric part starts around 2:20

It made me realize how extremely rare it is for a game to not only have a female protagonist but also a first person perspective where you can actually see your own body if you look down.

The ultimate reason it's wrong to ban transgender people from competing in athletics competitions is that the implication is that testosterone can be considered a performance enhancing drug -- even if the athlete in question is well within hormonal levels of any other cisgender athlete in the same sport.

If that's the case, then it opens the door to banning other athletes for exceeding the testosterone limit, and guess what? Cisgender women with African heritage naturally produce more testosterone than the average woman world-wide. So banning transgender athletes leads to potentially banning African women which is obviously racist and wrong to do.

Also, poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects about 1 in 10 women and a very common side effect of PCOS is elevated testosterone levels. So 1 in 10 women would be banned for medical reasons outside of their control. And banning people for a medical condition is ableist and obviously wrong to do.

And, ultimately, sports aren't fair. We try to make them equitable by making the rules universal, but biological advantages are just part of sports. If we start banning athletes for hormones, why not ban athletes for being taller than average? Why not ban athletes for having better vision than average? Or better peripheral vision? Or faster reflexes? If only the absolute average, or below average people were allowed to compete then nearly half of all people would be unable to compete.

Plus, the vast majority of athletes say that they don't want transgender people to be banned from their respective sports.

And not to mention that it's just rude to exclude transgender athletes, and if it were truly such an advantage to be transgender then why aren't transgender people winning tournaments left and right? About 1% of people are transgender, so if transgender people are winning 1% of all tournaments then that would mean that they're exactly on exactly equal footing with their competitors. But I suspect that less than 1% of tournament winners are transgender which means that transgender people are actually at a disadvantage, which again, is fine because sports are inherently unfair as I outlined above.

At the end of the day, transgender athlete bans hurt everyone, and anti-transgender jerks are just making a big stink about it because it sounds reasonable on it's face to uninformed people and so it's a good wedge issue to bring up. Anti-transgender people don't care about the sports they're "trying to save", they just hate transgender people and want to see them suffer, and anyone who entertains their non-sense is complicit (probably unknowingly) in that suffering.

So please, those of you who are reasonable, shut down any discussion of transgender sports bans.

Not very surprising results, but that's what science is about. Gotta question even what seems obvious because sometimes what's obvious is wrong.

It's nice to have affirmation, and it gives me the warm fuzzies to think about all the other trans people out there feeling those good good euphoria feelings.

For me, I'd say top euphoric moments so far are: getting my engagement photos done with my partner in a dress and professional hair and makeup -- I've never felt so pretty, having long time friends who knew me before transitioning ask which of us is going to get pregnant and carry the child when I mentioned having kids to them, getting flirted with by old school lesbians is so affirming too -- one even said, after telling her I'm trans, "well, you're all woman to me!"

There's been so much more, just a constant daily glow of joy from the very core of my being, but those are the top moments for me. I hope it gives others some warm fuzzies to read about my experiences so far.

Favourite: Sci-fi / Comedy
Least Favourite: Action / Reality

Action scenes in TV and movies are sooooo booooooring. I just check out and stop watching until it's over.

As for reality, there are parts that I like and I do watch some reality like Drag Race, but I hate all the negativity that it creates and the drama. I like the costumes and the funny parts of Drag Race but I hate, hate, haaaaate all the drama they try to create. It's pretty obvious that the production crew are stirring the pot to cause drama but like, I don't care!

I currently work part-time as a bus driver and I just wanna say that it's incredibly hard to determine who is right or wrong when you didn't see what happened and you're just going by what each kid says. If you only see the tail end of a fight, you might wrongfully think the kid retaliating is the bully. 99% of the time it's easier to just separate the kids and/or punish them both equally since it's impossible to determine who the victim and the perpetrator is. It sucks, it feels really bad, but that's the reality of the situation.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

The thing is that if someone is bothering you, then you need to go to the teacher. If you set a precedent that one kid is bothering you, then the teacher is more likely to believe you if you ever snap and hit your bully they'll be more understanding. But if you never say anything and then suddenly snap, then obviously it looks from the outside like you're the bully.

Egg - a transgender person that has yet to come out of their "shell".

When a person first makes the realization that they might be transgender, it's referred to as "cracking your egg" in the trans community.

Also, in popular culture it's commonplace to say that a person who is in denial is "putting up walls", so an egg is like a type of wall that completely surrounds you. Cracking your egg involves tearing down those walls.

Yeah but C makes more sense. 0-10 is cold but not freezing, 10-20 is cool, 20-30 is warm, 30-40 is hot, 40+ is "you're gonna die of heat exposure! Get inside, what are you doing?!" increasing in urgency with the number. If it's in the negatives, it's the same as the 40+ except "cold exposure".

I get what you're saying, but it's not like we're just taking that water and blasting it off into space. It's going to be used and then make it's way back into the ocean eventually. Either through evaporation and precipitation, or directly through rivers that feed into the ocean.

Of course, if there hasn't been already, there should definitely be some extensive studies into whether there are any blockades as far as that water returning to the oceans in a reasonable amount of time.

Also, this doesn't really have to do with your point but it's interesting none-the-less, it's really hard to keep view count numbers accurate when you've got multiple servers involved. The view count is accurate and every view is being counted, but any time you look at it, it's not exactly correct. If you think about how each server might get a view count update from the server at different times, and then add the views that only it sees to the view count, and then when it goes to add it's view counts to the central count and get a new updated number there may have been dozens of other server that have updated the view count at various times between then and now.

It all gets very complicated but I think it's kind of neat that a view count number can be accurately kept track of and yet every time you look at it, it's not exactly correct.
