It is insane that men will write songs about literally sexually assaulting women, but if a woman chooses to dance provocatively in a sexy outfit, or write a song with sexually explicit lyrics, we have to have a whole discussion about whether that's okay.

I hate the attitude that working very hard is some kind of moral obligation, it just isn't. People on salary that get asked to work overtime are being stolen from, period. It's interesting how often jobs will ask you to prove that you're a good worker, but never have to prove that they are good employers. Just like any good relationship, you should never be giving more than you're getting back.

Okay, honest question, why do people call funny posts shitposting? I think we should call news about Elon, Republicans, Fascism, Shootings ect, Shitposts, because they are actually shitty, and posts that make me laugh need a different name, because why is enjoyment shitty? What kind of world is it that we are shamed for enjoyment?

I'm thinking about Mastodon in a wide view, in the world of social media, this feels a little outsider, while at the same time it also feels like it might be the future. So, let's talk about it!
What do you get out of Mastodon?
Why are you here?
How has it compared with your other social media experiences?
What do you see for the future of Mastodon?
What do you want to see?
And basically anything else about it you want to say about Mastodon.
LET'S TALK!

@mambearpnw Maybe? With the new search feature you might be able to just search for Holly or Stephen King, but the or hashtags will work if someone used them. I don't get many hits on the first, but I get plenty mentioning that book for the second.

If you're a reader you can follow or the auto-boosting group @bookstodon (this makes it easier to find people who use the hashtag), people love to talk books with those.

mambearpnw,

@SRLevine @bookstodon Thanks for showing up. I appreciate the patience. 👊

OKAY, before we go full fall, an ice cream question!

I found this little gem in the ice cream section, so I'm wondering what's the weirdest ice cream flavor you've ever tried?

@RickiTarr That sentence belongs in the book of things a gaijin better know before coming to Japan.

Or really, any patriarchal hellhole.

Nobody is fascinated by you. You aren't a spectacle generating waves of awe and wonder. You are an existential threat.

Dudes still think that reaction is because they ooze handsome.

@pnwpetey @RickiTarr Yikes.

I grow weary of scholarly white women who believe sex work is a choice when the choices aren't really choices.

The lengths some women will go to frame sex work as "feminist" is pretty astounding.

Farming out your body to escape poverty isn't the same as having bodily autonomy.

Yep, sometimes people are overly sensitive on Mastodon, and Yep, it can be more serious here sometimes too, BUT I in no way miss the bullying and harassment of anyone left of center, LGBTQ, women, people of color, anyone that was decided to be too "Woke". I don't miss how difficult it was to get rid of people who had blatantly broke the rules. I don't miss clique gangs who would randomly decided to destroy someone else's account because of pettiness. I most definitely don't miss actual fucking Nazis.

If people seem overly sensitive and serious, remember it's usually because they found a safer place to be themselves and they really really want to keep it that way. We have the opportunity to build, and maintain great things here. So, if you want more funny, make more funny, make whatever you want, let's just keep each other safe.

I want to address something I've been thinking about recently. As far as Religion, Afterlife, ect, I'm solidly in the "I don't know" camp, and I'm fine with that. I think any Religion, Religious Institution, or Religious Leader who has used spiritual beliefs to oppress, control, manipulate, or financially gain from other people should be both questioned and mocked, and I have no problem doing it, or with other people doing it.

The issue I run into on Mastodon is Aggressive Atheism. I have no issue with atheism at all, but I do have a problem if it's used to attack other people for their personal spiritual beliefs. If someone is making a comment about something they believe personally, and they aren't hurting anyone with it, jumping into the comments to say "PROVE GOD IS REAL" is just as annoying and pointless as a couple Religious people knocking on your door, and telling you, you must accept their Lord. This is simply a matter of respecting other people.

I genuinely think that books like To Kill a Mockingbird and Little House on the Prairie are so popular, because they represent a world where you can have a father that is loving, emotionally stable, and just.

darklyadapted,

@RickiTarr Um, I don't think Charles Ingalls was all that. He dragged his wife and small children on the pioneer trail because it suited him to, and in the first book Laura gets whipped with a strap. She's about four at the time.

Okay you have $100, but you have to spend it on something stupid instead of practical, what are you getting for yourself?

This is not the question to be noble on, I will poke you with a fork (just a little, but it will tickle). You've been warned!

@RickiTarr $100 is exactly how much I have to send to Somalia to claim the $509.000 which is waiting for me to claim it. It’s the 9 that makes it genuine.

Single Payer Healthcare in US!

profit motive does not improve medical outcomes

Rhaedas,
@Rhaedas@kbin.social avatar

@VoiceofDuum If I had to choose between single payer or a type of universal income I guess the health option would have a larger scale effect. Maybe in a law form they could be combined to be components of a "general welfare" reform to make sure every person has a baseline of comfort and well-being.
