Rentlar,

Keep in mind that the question is presented will affect how it is responded to as well. I, for one, get very defensive when people act all entitled expecting the world and the moon for free from FOSS developers. Here’s the difference:

Good:

I’ve been trying out [software], but I’ve been having a problem with [issue].

Thanks for your work on [software]. I’m having trouble using [feature] because of [issue]. I tried a number of things to solve it, [troubleshooting steps] but no luck.

[Software] has been having an issue lately with [issue] when I do [recreation steps]. Does anyone know the problem and how it can be fixed?

Bad:

Why isn’t [issue] with [software] fixed already?

When are we going to get [feature]~~~~~

[Software] is completely unusable until they get [issue] fixed. (This may be true, but what kind of motivation do these kinds of comments give the developer to fix them?)

Someone help! [Software] isn’t working! It’s showing an error! (No real description of what happened, how it happened, no effort shown to help the developer fix the problem)

So all in all it’s about tone for me. I’m happy to guide people, but bad tone puts me off a bit in wanting to help them.

Rentlar,

This discovery has potential. At least it’s not a totally exotic process to make this LK-99. I bet more researchers are going to jump on it and explore how it will work and where its limitations are.

The click-baityness is a little off-putting about this video. This doesn’t solve everything, but it’s possibly a big leap in the field of superconductors.

Rentlar,

You should have seen that long post someone did on “why I hate your favourite story-telling game”, on Beehaw last month.

I’ll edit it in once I find it.

Found it! Beehaw link Original link

Rentlar,

Go on.

And what makes you think that?

Mhm. Tell me more.

“Human or human-like”. Can you tell me more about that?

How do you feel about it?

A Discussion of Mastodon's Potential Growth Needs (erinkissane.com)

The title I have assigned this article is intentionally boring. The article’s body goes out of its way to not provide simple summaries, silver bullets, or otherwise give a single size fits all answer to everything. The author actually gave it a fun title that, I felt, did a slight disservice to their overall point, but hey, we...

Rentlar,

I’ve never found Twitter or Mastodon type of social media blogging interesting, personally. I don’t need to know what person X is saying or what is buzzing.

I more like to hear topic based conversation, where who is saying it matters less, so Lemmy (and formerly Reddit) was for me.

In the article apparently things feel too sanitized/no-fun-allowed on Mastodon, which is interesting. The most popular communities on Lemmy are Memes and shitposts, which I guess follows suit with this.

Rentlar,

…screaming into the void…

Yeah, to me, following people on Twitter is like an online and more socially acceptable form of following that mentally unstable person that’s walking along the street yammering on to themselves about how everyone’s a scumbag and the world is out to get them.

Rentlar,

Apparently the materials aren’t extraordinarily rare and the process to create it isn’t too mindboggling. It should be possible for other labs to produce and test.

Rentlar,

Nice to hear the update and your appeal was accepted.

You need to be very careful as someone underage with sexual stuff in particular. Giving away nude/suggestive photos of yourself counts as distribution of CP (in Canada and other countries) and in some countries even descriptions of it can fall in that category, so do not do that under any circumstances. No joke. It’s for your own safety.

Google employee responds to all the negative feedback WEI, (google drm the web) (github.com)

Hey everyone, thank you for your patience, and thank you to everyone who engaged constructively. It is clear based on the feedback we’ve received that a bigger discussion needs to take place, and I’m not sure my personal repository is the best place to do that - we are looking for a better forum and will update when we have...

Rentlar,

Yes or a “retry until attestation received” strategy by websites.

Pokémon Sleep: Japanese walkthrough site lists “sleeping pills” as a tool for real competitive sleepers, but quickly backtracks (automaton-media.com)

A Japanese video game walkthrough listing sleeping pills as one of their recommended methods to get high scores in Pokémon Sleep has gone viral on Japanese Twitter recently. The mention of sleeping aid has since been deleted from the site.

Rentlar,

The original Japanese Twitter comment points out that sleeping pills is a Pay 2 Win mechanic, lol.

Rentlar,

I was going to say ChatGPT.

I think the smugness of StackOverflow is still part of it. Even if ChatGPT sometimes fabricates imaginary code, it’s tone is flowery and helpful, compared to the typical pretentiousness of Stackoverflow users.

Rentlar,

I wonder how many (e)X-twitter users there will be after this change.

Even Mastodon’s old lingo "toot"ing sounds more trendy than "x"ing a comment.

Rentlar,

Headline to come one week later:

“After some backlash from users, Musk comes to a compromise: the new twitter logo is a blue bird with a giant Red X over it.”

Rentlar,

“Oh yeah that’s pretty cool” has been my go-to, whether drunk, sober or high.

Rentlar,

I went easy on myself. I vowed to never comment or post on that account… buuuut I didn’t say I wouldn’t place any dots in protest.

Hmmm I wonder if the V O I D will win out this time.

Rentlar,

Definitely this, they have probably been planning this to pump their engagement numbers up. If I am gonna engage, then I’d better be doing it to give Reddit the middle finger.

Rentlar,

Hahahaha, uh oh I might see if there’s going to be a join lemmy logo effort.

Rentlar,

I’m tired of saying the same things so have a fun analogy for Reddit:

You have a sandbox, invite people to build sandcastles. So they come and build them and a lot of people are checking your sandbox out.

Then you stomp on everyone else’s sandcastle so that your overturned pail of sand stands the tallest, and laugh in their faces.

Now you’re wondering why everyone left and is mad at you?

Rentlar,

CalKey would have cause a little less choking when trying to pronounce it…

Rentlar,

I’m with ya there. As much as I’m done with Reddit… the thought of spitting in Reddit’s face after what they’ve done to spite everyone else in the quest for money, is tantalizing.

Rentlar,

Playing the first mission a bunch of times was a bit of a chore but I did like the multiple endings and branching story. I’ve played around half of the endings many years ago. The “I’m an Android now, I guess?” ending is my favourite.

Rentlar,

For context this is the full quote, where MLK Jr. condemns riots but also equally condemns the conditions that cause people to riot: inequality, injustice, lack of humanity, lack of progress.

Let me say, as I’ve always said, and I will always continue to say, that riots are socially destructive and self-defeating. I’m still convinced that nonviolence is the most potent weapons available to oppress[ed] people in their struggle for freedom and justice. I feel that violence will only create more social problems than they will solve, that in a real sense, it is impractical for the Negro to even think of mounting a violent revolution in the United States. So I will continue to condemn riots and continue to say to my brothers and sisters that this is not the way. Continue to affirm that there is another way.

But at the same time, it is as necessary for me to be as vigorous in condemning the conditions which cause persons to feel that they must engage in riotous activities, as it is for me to condemn riots. I think America must see that riots do not develop out of thin air. Certain conditions continue to exist in our society, which must be condemned as vigorously as we condemn riots. And in the final analysis, a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the Negro poor has worsened over the last few years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice, equality, and humanity. So in a real sense, our nation’s summer’s riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again. Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention.

Rentlar,

Since the correct mathematical answer isn’t one of the options, the people picking the other options are representing a real resistance to the order of mathematical logic that binds us.

The real answer is 14 because I’m 14 and this is deep.

Rentlar,

Very cute. Love to see fun stuff like this in c/humor.

Rentlar,

Apple takes a cut too, so it’s a whole line of squeezing cash out of users.

No more 3rd party apps, so now we have license to make our app shittier unless you pay to keep it less shitty.

Rentlar,

Upcoming Reddit DLC store:

  • Keep listening to music after switching to app - 5.99
  • Battery Saver mode - 2.99 per month
  • Block more users - 4.99 per additional 50 blocks
  • Upvote button doesn’t open the “Share” feature - 0.99 per 50 upvotes, 9.99 per 50 votes for NSFW posts

Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Linux and FOSS. I have been using and installing distros on my own since I was 12. Now that I’m working in tech-related positions, after the Reddit migration happened, etc. I recovered my interest in all the Linux environment. I use Ubuntu as my main operating system in my Desktop, but I always end...

Rentlar,

Yeah, to sum up my experience as a Linux and Ubuntu user for 10 years in 2 short sentences:

With Windows I’m fighting against my computer and Microsoft’s bullshittery.

With Linux I’m fighting against my own incompetence.

Rentlar,

20 years ago, give or take 10, VHS video tapes were a major form factor for films and entertainment at home. Of course you could record for 8 hours at trash quality but you could get 2 hours at better quality. So to best accommodate films for VHS they cut them down to 2 hours max (118 mins was a frequent runtime for adult movies and 88 mins for kids movies).

Rentlar,

“Extrinsically motivated” games I like: I’ll play it once, beat it, play a bit of post game, drop it.

“Intrinsically motivated” games I like: make my own stupid-ass goal, spend dozens and dozens of hours on it, finally do the stupid thing, progressed 1% further through the game, get bored, drop it, but then I pick it up again thinking about doing another stupid-ass thing.

Rentlar,

My boycot of Starcraft is until Kotick leaves or a verifiable change in culture at (Acti-)Blizzard, I can’t believe I’m cheering for Microsoft to kick that money-grubbing gremlin of a CEO out.

Rentlar,

Heyyyyy a fellow Arial fan. The Aptos font feels like the Mac version of Arial.

Rentlar,

I love transit and I live less than 15-minutes from a bus stop, but last night it took 2 hours and 15 minutes to get home by the bus that would have been around 30 minutes of a drive. Just having a bus stop isn’t enough to make people consider switching. It needs to be at least reasonably competitive in time or price.

Also car advocates always are sure to bring up their disgust with sharing their commute with nasty people or the homeless. That’s a tried and true method to drum up fear against a working, affordable transportation system.

Rentlar,

Even slightly older styles like Liquipedia and Wikidot have far superior interfaces to fandom wikis. Every year they seem to get slower and more bloated with additional popups. Like wth is the purpose of the “Are you a kid?” question.

Rentlar,

Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine is a really fun stealthy top-down 2D story game. It support 4P coop. There are several characters with very different abilities allowing for unique ways to tackle the map’s challenges. There is also a scenario editor to create custom challenges.

Rentlar,

For me, it’s a matter of taste and philosophy. IMAP and POP3 are like ActivityPub, a public and widely-adopted protocol standard for their purpose. It represents my ownership of my email.

There’s no unnecessary tracking or metrics while I draft my mail. I don’t need Microsoft and Google’s advertisements. If they decide to suddenly purge my almost 20 years worth of electronic mail, then I still have a backup copy.

Thunderbird is a really useful client too. You can even participate in matrix chatrooms through it.

Rentlar,

This is a good suggestion, as it is more relevant for folks on lemmy.ca than other instances.

Tumblr says it’s going to “fix” its “core experience” to appeal to new users (www.theverge.com)

Tumblr plans to make changes to appeal to new users and improve growth. The post states that Tumblr is currently difficult for new users to use and curates content poorly. Tumblr aims to improve how users discover and sign up, encourage frequent engagement, and boost creators’ ability to attract audiences. Specific changes...

Rentlar,

Tumblr is trying to appeal to the user demographic that wouldn’t bother going through the knee-high obstacle that is to sign up and learn to use Lemmy.

Rentlar,

“Mom said it’s my turn to fuck over my userbase!”

Rentlar,

qBitTorrent has an inbuilt search feature that is kind of hidden. It supports plugins to search your favourite sites.

Here’s a complete article on how to enable it and get the plugins.

Rentlar,

As you say, in casual conversation, the subject is often implied after its introduction. So after asking “How is Tomoko?” if you say, “Got yelled at by the boss again?”, your listener would know that you would be asking about Tomoko’s situation, without saying she get yelled at. In English it tends to default to you or I.

Rentlar,

Excellent news. It’s disappointing that the authorities had tacitly permitted the mine to continue operating, bringing noise pollution and carcinogens to the local population.

Rentlar,

I don’t have too many good suggestions but mid-to-late game Satisfactory has some of the vibe you might be looking for, especially if you are able to have it run on a dedicated server while you are away.

It’s hella addictive and it might take 8 hours of playing to get to a point the factory can run completely on its own. It can be a bit complicated to get everything run at a good efficiency but it’s pretty much not required unless you a raging perfectionist.

Rentlar,

Yes exactly. However, until you get coal power going, the factory runs on biofuel which you have to keep getting yourself or else it shuts down after a couple hours. Which is why I say mid to late game fits this best.

Once you do, then you can produce an unlimited amount of stuff as long as you have somewhere to store it (unlike Factorio that has limited resources) and use it to build whatever you think you need. The milestones get progressively more complex :/ but you have the leisure to complete it at whatever pace you like :)
