PlasterAnalyst,

What kind of dumdum buys a "high end" android phone?

PlasterAnalyst,

I think it's more popular in poorer countries because you don't need a high end PC to play it.

PlasterAnalyst,

"copy the floppy"

PlasterAnalyst,

I copied a floppy with a downloaded car on it. Come at me bro.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

PlasterAnalyst,

Exercise during the day so you're physically tired. Either that or get a job on night shift so your sleep schedule is continuously messed up.

PlasterAnalyst,

Change your mindset. Decide to put more effort into your personal life than you do work. Don't burn all your fuel for a workplace that doesn't care if you live or die.

PlasterAnalyst,

Sometimes you have to let people struggle. Managing people means delegating tasks. When I was training to be a McDonald's shift manger in my early 20's one of the training videos said that you should run a shift with your hands in your pockets. What they meant was that you needed to shift your mindset from being a crew member to a manger. You will never get any of your own work done because you will be focused on helping the other crew members with their tasks rather than focusing on the big picture.

PlasterAnalyst,

You just need to manage your bosses expectations better. If they say they want it done by the end of the week, then you need to tell them that it's not possible and you can get it done by the end of the month.

How will we ever get away from plastics when they are ubiquitous for safety

Plastic seals food, sterile medical implements, medicine, beverages, etc… it’s seems like plastic is used as a way to seal things safely. Post pandemic rising, I see even more. My work used to be have plastic utensils in the cafeteria, for example, an already wasteful thing. Now, post-2020, every fork, knife, and spoon is...

PlasterAnalyst,

Single use consumer plastics should be banned.

PlasterAnalyst,

We have a 55" led TV from about 10 years ago. We bought it at a physical sears store. I replaced the power supply board maybe 5-6 years ago? Because the backlight stopped working. The current problem with it is that if it has been on in the past few hours she you try to turn it on again it takes 15-20 minutes to finally turn on. No amount of power cycling or fiddling fixes it, you just have to press the power button and wait. If you turn it on after it has been off all night, then it starts up fine. I really don't want to buy a new TV right now and I don't really want a smart TV anyway.

PlasterAnalyst,

I've read that some won't work that way and some do and I really don't want to research tvs at the moment.

Switching to Debian on my gaming pc

Hello everyone - I have been wanting to ditch windows on my gaming pc for a while now, and since I have recently finished a large project, I now have the free time to switch. I am relatively comfortable with Debian having used it for a while on my web server as well as school laptop, but I am concerned about using it on my...

PlasterAnalyst,

I've had stability issues with mint. It's usually a problem with updates bricking my install.

PlasterAnalyst,

Schiphol airport is also a train terminal.

PlasterAnalyst,

It's 20mph which is 32kmh

How did Lemmy World become the default instance?

World was already the biggest by far when I first started lurking back in July, and it’s just getting more dominant. Before, there was quite some diversity in the distribution of generic communities, but nowadays the vast majority of posts that reach the top are from over there....

PlasterAnalyst,

It's a containment instance to keep the kids busy.

PlasterAnalyst,

License plates from 1925. I'm tempted to put them on my car in a year because they simply say 25 on them.

Where can I find documentation on how federation works? (kbin.social)

I can't find anything on the specifics of how federation actually works. The op thread gets copied to any federated server? What happens if the thread is deleted on the op server? Does it still exist on all other federated servers? How do comments and votes work? That kind of thing.

/kbin logotype

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

PlasterAnalyst,

I mean, you would save a lot more money if you did 2 seconds of research by comparing prices before you buy things and also avoiding unnecessary expenditures like convenience foods like Taco Bell, junk food, and carbonated beverages.

It's amazing to me how many people let themselves get nickel and dimed to death because, "it's only $20."

PlasterAnalyst,

It says the average rent for a 2 bedroom rental is $1,486. If you're working $15/hr then you absolutely should be avoiding unnecessary expenses if you want to afford to live. Many people lack impulse control and financial literacy. If they had savings, then they could afford to ride out emergencies and move for a better job, things you can't do when you have $15 to your name. It honestly hurts to watch some people actively hurting themselves by their own bad decisions.

PlasterAnalyst,

Still works on eBay for now, the one thing they haven't broken.

PlasterAnalyst,

You already need a scan tool for many models in order to retract the electric handbrake.

PlasterAnalyst,

Required vigorous energy reduction plans for industrial sites.

PlasterAnalyst,

Production based billing over a base kwh so it doesn't affect normal households.

They should have mandatory energy reduction plans regardless. They waste a lot of energy.

PlasterAnalyst,

Health insurance through work.

Somehow health, vision, and dental insurance are a fixed price. The highest earners pay the exact same as the lowest. However, retirement savings through work are based on a percentage of income. Both of these things benefit higher earners the most

PlasterAnalyst,

They become middle management.

PlasterAnalyst,

Each Lemmy instance keeps a copy of posts and contents made in communities followed by its users

This is exactly why I stopped hosting an instance. Too much liability for something out of my control.

PlasterAnalyst,

You could download a video to watch later when you won't have access to an Internet connection for whatever reason

PlasterAnalyst,

I have to pretend not to hate my boss to his face every day.

Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...

PlasterAnalyst,

There's also the possibility of competing interests. There's no "wrong" answer, but people will argue certain facts to persuade others to take their position. This is called "politics."

PlasterAnalyst,

The local market for a steamdeck is going to be ziltch unless you live in a major metropolitan area. Not many people are going to be in the market for one in the first place.

Let's talk travel/insulated mugs.

So can we talk mugs? I tend to make a half liter (~17 oz) of coffee in a French Press in the morning. I run into the problem that I get about a half hour to 45 minutes (I’ve never timed it this number might be wildly off) in before the, “Crap! Its getting cold!” moment and feel like I have to accelerate my consumption to...

PlasterAnalyst,

I threw my Contigo away years ago because the lid collected gunk. I have both a yeti and multiple off brands such as "mossy oak" stainless steel travel mugs. They all perform the same as far as I can tell. The issue is that they retain heat too well. I tend to turn the electric kettle off before it starts boiling. I also add a bunch of milk to my coffee to cool it down so I can actually drink it. You could also tune the temperature with ice cubes or leave the lid off to let it cool if you have time.

I also have a classic green Stanley thermos which keeps things hot for over 12 hours, even if left in the car during the winter.

PlasterAnalyst,

Beagles are naturally like that. They're also high energy dogs. I would try to walk and play with him more to wear him out.

PlasterAnalyst,

Your little sister is now the Alpha.

PlasterAnalyst,

People that sit in air conditioned offices and do 3 hours of work all day get paid more than people who work on the factory floor for 12 hours with minimal breaks. Makes no sense.

PlasterAnalyst,

I'm talking about a typical unskilled office job. The kind that will easily be replaced by ai in the next decade.

PlasterAnalyst,

In Halt and Catch Fire one of the main characters uses the term "killer app" which I'm not sure is period correct for the early eighties. Always bugged the crap out of me.

PlasterAnalyst,

Sonicare toothbrush, then floss, then waterpik. The kids waterpik is cheaper and does the same thing.

PlasterAnalyst,

We made a geocities page as a group project and the teacher thought we were geniuses.

Why isn't everyone talking about AI generated audiobooks?

I just listened to this AI generated audiobook and if it didn’t say it was AI, I’d have thought it was human-made. It has different voices, dramatization, sound effects… The last I’d heard about this tech was a post saying Stephen Fry’s voice was stolen and replicated by AI. But since then, nothing, even though it’s...

PlasterAnalyst,

A lot of audiobook voices are harmful to the industry. Plenty of times I've listened to a book for ten minutes and said nevermind because the voice actor was terrible, making wet mouth sounds or their voice was just annoying or the audio quality was terrible.

PlasterAnalyst,

What are they exactly? Are these commercial releases or are they recordings onto blanks? Some VHS are worth quite a bit, even used blank tapes are worth a bit of money, depending on what they are.

Apple Argued Safari Is Three Different Browsers to Avoid Regulation in EU (www.macrumors.com)

It has now emerged that after being informed that Safari was likely to fall under the DMA’s regulations, Apple filed formal a response to the European Union claiming that Safari is, in fact, “three distinct web browsers.” The company’s claim is based on the argument that Safari for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are entirely...

PlasterAnalyst,

So they won't mind being split into three different companies, right?

PlasterAnalyst,

I haven't had to take a driving test in over 20 years. Only once I had to take a multiple choice test on the meaning of various signs and you get three chances to pass it. It's absolutely absurd that they allow people to get their license at 16 and rarely have to retake a driving test.

[US] Looking for some ideas for freelance work / "side hustle" (fedia.io)

Title. I found out recently that I need some major dental work in the near future and I don't have a damn clue how I am going to raise the extra money. I want to explore any realistic options for increasing my earnings before I have to resort to taking on debt, and I suspect that soliciting ideas in a semi-public place like this...

PlasterAnalyst,

Flipping, you can sell things on eBay, mercari, fb marketplace, Craigslist, etc. Start by selling things you already own that you no longer want. Then you go out and find things that you're knowledgeable about and buy those, then resell them. I've sold over $8k this year ($5k after costs) and I don't put a lot of effort into it.

PlasterAnalyst,

Memes were passed around on floppy disks.
