MARTIN: There’s a report that the military was using artificial intelligence to try to map these tunnels. Do you have any sense of how that would work?...
My in-laws are in Arizona where there are scorpions. I’m giving them a powerful blacklight flashlight so we can go look for them when it gets dark out.
It’s always difficult to merge worlds but maybe adamantium is roughly equivalent to beskar or slightly better.
I think wolverine would win in that fight. He’s got lots of experience fighting many different enemies varied power including “throw things at him” and can take a ton of damage. In contrast vader will be a bit surprised by the healing abilities, commentary and hidden armor.
Sex work should be legal and the morality discussion here is about people lying to their spouses and if anybody is being forced into sex work… all interesting topics.
But anybody implicated in this situation needs all security clearances and access dropped because they are high risk morons.
For keeping my mind off “stuff” I do the headphones and constant audio. Both books and podcasts.
It’s an escape but I also feel like all the problems are still there — and at some point I still need to deal with them. Thus I listen to a lot of books because I’ll need to starts a new one right away.
Interesting listening to a good book again is great when I’m stressed. It keeps me from thinking random bad thoughts but, since I know the story, it still lets me relax or let my thoughts wander a bit.
This is what strikes me most about these types of posts. I see two totally different people where I can totally identify with one picture and totally not with the other.
Then I think about being forced to look like the person I can’t identify with.
this implies that servers should focus, like on news, tech, extreme sports, or whatever. rather than trying to be the hub for all topics the way reddit and others are?

How in the world do you expect to function in a group if you can’t or won’t communicate with people in real time?
wow. i thought it was just me.
I’ve got really good people on the team – but only if you trust them go do stuff with zero communications and then the pop back up with completed work. Which is kinda ok if you don’t need to do any team projects. Its driving me nuts and I totally see why some managers are like “fuck it, get your ass into the same room”. Its simply easier than coaching people on how to be slightly better than a chatbot.
The Associated Press has issued guidelines on artificial intelligence, saying the tool cannot be used to create publishable content and images for the news service while encouraging staff members to become familiar with the technology....
I think the legal teams are out of control and have a vendetta against the tech because chatGPT passed the bar exam. I’m kinda sick of their blanket bans paired with “but learn to use it” BS.
This is a stupid policy statement. The tech will be used by teams just the same way autocorrect or grammar checkers are used — simply because it’ll be baked into all their editing tools within a couple of years. Similarly they’re going to keep using licensed image libraries and will transition to AI generated images as their licensed libraries transition to the tech.
Former President Donald Trump is expected to surrender himself to the Fulton County jail at the end of next week – on Thursday or Friday, a senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the surrender told CNN.
I think FreeLikeGNU has a point here… the happier America as described has generally only been a reality for a subset of the population. Can we really suggest that is/was the ‘character [of] America’ as a whole?
The whole “MAGA” thing feels related to this point. Its like a large group of American’s feel the oppression, fear and lack of optimism and, in their anger and frustration, have embraced a view that what made America great was the division and exploitation rather than the optimism.
I’d argue causality — that they were purposefully led to that view by exploitative fuckwad Republican leadership that cared about Party more than the country and who used the fear, and exploited the crisis, to gain and maintain power and now don’t want to give it up. But we don’t really need to understand why or who led that change to also step back and be sad that the change happened.
I second this. Its horrible and sad that so many people are evil, or more to the point, can be led to an evil position which they’ll embrace and defend with all their intellect.
One of the scariest things about this shift is a realization that this is how countries do horrible things. A mob of excited people can make group decisions, and will follow horrible leaders because, well, because people can driven by emotions and group-think and localized social norms.
If the current Republican Party maintains its cohesion and membership I think what has been a generational lapse into authoritarian insanity could be a permanent shift in the American psyche. Thats even more terrifying than seeing so many people vote for Trump.
And to make matters worse I’m not spending free moments learning more and more computer science — but am instead reading internet stuff about material science. I can enjoy my wide ranging brain but agree that sometimes I wish I was more focused.
If big companies succeed in capturing the knowledge workers market share and transferring all those salaries into their own profits then it will be reflected in the stock prices of those big companies. People, mostly currently rich people, who own those stock will benefit.
Same as it ever was for other forms of automation or job outsourcing. Why would this be any different?
I will lose sleep over the nut jobs that fantasize about shouting up their local town police force to “rescue trump”.
These are the same types of people that caused the civil war. I don’t the great sort is at that point yet - but it worries me that they are willing to destroy the country to (try and) maintain their position of power over others.
I don’t see how we defuse and resolve those conflicts. They’ve been going on for a long time.
There’s been a string of security blunders in Azure in the last couple years but leaking a signing key and then trying to downplay it is really beyond the pale
(FYI - in hear this excuse all the time at a large company. Somehow our complexity and scale is always an excuse people reach toward. And, as you say, our job from infosec is to shut that whining down.
A nonprofit organization that researches links between social media, hate and extremism has been threatened with a lawsuit by X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
I’ve an impression that “people are even nastier than before” has been a result of Trump era politics which reveled in nastiness — which itself appeared to be a pushback from nasty people about Obama being president. Basically its been a growing divide and was made a lot worse when such a prominent political group doubled down on divisiveness as a tribal identity.
I think it predated covid, which certainly made things worse, but I don’t really know what the cause was.
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the child killing and fascist racist pig State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
The conservative deep state keeps that definition of “free” in the DL.

That is a great idea for a browser extension. An AI module that hides ads and clicks x’s and generally fucks with their engagement numbers but don’t let any of it get to your eyeballs.
Also, modern tools are getting pretty good at dealing with text embedded in images. It isn’t ideal but this partially mitigates a large concern (accessibility). Rather than complaining about people taking screenshots maybe pressure should be placed on the screenshot tools, and image formats, to better capture the raw text exactly and embed it as extra data along with the image.

This new proletarian led society will then provide the outcomes that are most beneficial to the proletariat instead.
This is not very specific.
What does this look like? Is it 100% communist, 100% socialism or…. what? Maybe some sort of regulated market with very high tax rates like during the “golden age” of capitalism (post world war 2).
Personally, I think I’d enjoy a capitalist society with high tax rates and a strong safety net. Some sort of middle ground.

I’m here in my van on a hot hot day doing ‘work’ (in this case a little browsing of lemmy).
cooling me down is a "arctic air’ USB fan with a little water reservoir providing a misting action. I think I said, “as seen on tv” like six times after buying it because how stupid can you get – but i needed a fan and this is what the local hardware store had that ran on USB.
Wow. I love it. Fast, quiet, low power, good air, and the misting function is awesome. I’d buy it again in a heartbeat. (assuming it doesn’t break within a week).
