As a closeted bi dude in Canada let me burst your bubble and let you know that Canada is no progressive safe haven. The militant anti lgbtq “litterboxes have infested our schools” style of facism masquerading as conservatism is growing at an alarming rate. My entire towns Facebook pages are overrun with this ideology. If you go on Grindr here, over half the accounts are hate accounts that harass and attempt to stalk users. It’s no picnic here.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Some dudes play the long game to get you to open up and then they post all of your stuff on the town pages and stuff calling you a groomer or a pedo. And the worst part is that most people believe the first thing they see/hear/read so all it takes is one rumour or malicious post and your entire life in the town is upside down. Can’t leave the house to go to the grocery store without someone sneering or making a remark.

Rural Atlantic Canada is absolutely fucked and it wasn’t even this bad 3 years ago when I moved here. Looking to make my exit plan in the next year or so.

PerogiBoi,

New Brunswick. The province that enacted a special law to force teachers to out trans and gay kids to their parents based off of 3 fraudulent conspiracy letters, one of which literally mentioned litterboxes in classrooms.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s the goal. I used to live in a metropolitan area but was priced out and moved more rurally but things now have gotten very very bad where I’m at. Saving some money and hoping I can sell the house before someone burns it down.

I’m hoping I’m just being extreme at the last part 😭

I’ve got some anecdotal evidence that it fully and completely cured my road rage. I’ve been 5 years without a gut wrenching anger when I get cut off or when someone without self awareness whips their car out in front of me.

Also I don’t blame myself for my parents decade long divorce that made them both very very poor. Bonus.

If you’re in Canada you can order them online and they’ll come by Canada Post within a few days.

People only read what they want to see. Which is why every comment here conveniently is skipping over the massive rise in hate crimes that Jews are facing.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

As a Jew I’m used to people finding excuses for making us “less-than”. We must at all times show everyone how we denounce civilian deaths because to everyone, we’re a singular monolith without capacity for original thought and opinion. Otherwise it’s assumed we’re monsters who support civilian casualties.

But don’t talk about the extreme rise of hate crimes against Jews in Canada. Somehow, we deserve it.

This place is no more progressive than Reddit.

To me it looks like you hold a lot of pride in being a human and consider humanity special. Im here to tell you we are no different from amoebas and giraffes. We just specialize in our complex meat computers.

If you took a psychedelic or a cognitive psychology class you would understand through feel that feel is just the result of you being a meat calculator. Our feelings are the cumulative result of all the inputs and outputs. All at once. Slap some lived experience filters for subjectivity and bam.

Feel is subjective. Not everyone’s a vicious crypto tech bro. Open your mind its a good time ❤️

My government is mostly privatized. We even hired a consulting firm to figure out how the government could lower consulting fees. The consultants found that if we consult less, we will have lower consulting fees. We paid over half a million for that single report:

I have simultaneously merged with my desk. My bowels have been displaced and are now bisected with bamboo. I feel simultaneously ripped apart and yet stuck and solid. Every point of my being is as though it has been engulfed in flames. My existence and identity has now become insufferable pain. I feel an impending sense of doom at a foreign body now lodged inside of me.

There are no wounds for me to bleed from and I cannot gasp for air to scream. My spinal cord has been severed and I feel hot prickles on my cheeks and my ears feel as though they are being stuffed with cotton. An internal white hot pressure feeling erupts up my now-fractured spine until it reaches the back of my head and radiates towards my forehead. My peripheral vision looks like static and everything appears to shake. I am unable to make sense of anything and everything goes dark and still.

U killed me op wow

Use an auto-hiding panel instead and add a taskbar so that your running programs are there. I use that with KDE Wayland and it works well and is highly customizable.

My wife used to steal my fries but we worked out a solution that we both like. I eat my fries and if she wants them she just pecks me right under the chin repeatedly until I vomit the fries into her mouth. It works really well because they’re not fully digested at this point and I’ve already sort of pre-chewed them so she doesn’t have to do much work (hubby to the rescue right?). It’s also more economical as you only have to purchase one unit of fries and not two. This represents the successful implementation of a 50% efficiency improvement and I’m really proud of it :)

I used a bootable Ubuntu usb to save the contents of my windows hard drive after it failed. I successfully brought the files onto an external drive and installed Linux after. It was so fun. It still is.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

Because swearing is a natural part of the human experience and most level headed people don’t feel the need to suppress human expression.

Swearing serves an important biological need to express emotion and communicate. Psychologically, we swear to express strong emotions and when people swear, they are inherently viewed as more trustworthy or honest. Swearing helps people bond.

Thank you for speaking up. I’m Jewish and have family in Israel that have been affected by the October 7 terror attack. My heart breaks for the innocent Palestinians caught between and can’t get out and who have only ever known conflict. My heart also breaks for the Israelis who are subject to terror inflicted by Hamas. This is not like Russia invading Ukraine. This conflict is messy and there is no clear good guy or bad guy.

People are so quick to jump to conclusions (just look at the parent comment here, highly upvoted and claiming that Canada is locking people up for wrongthink). All this knee-jerk reactionary rhetoric spells is more firebombed synagogues, shootings on Jewish schools, and open acceptance of antisemitism since people at large cannot distinguish Jews from Israel (as the parent comment was not even able to do, and they outwardly claim they don’t even have a dog in this fight. No dog, but very quick to jump to conclusions and extremes).

Israeli army executes an elderly Palestinian after using him in propaganda campaign about its ‘safe corridor’ in Gaza (euromedmonitor.org)

Geneva – The Israeli army’s execution of an elderly Palestinian after using him in a propaganda campaign promoting its “safe corridor” in Gaza was strongly condemned in a statement released by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor today....

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

This is way too far. You’re literally calling for the genocide of Israelis because an unverified claim from a website has claimed (without providing any evidence) that Israel has committed a war crime.

If it’s true, Israeli solider should be hit with war crime charges.

You and your attitude are why synagogues all over the world are being burnt and Jews are being attacked. You sound exactly like the ones you condemn.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

A terrorist attack that targeted civilians exclusively and subsequently slowly killing hostages while using them for propaganda videos and shooting at fleeing Palestinians is not “fighting for freedom”.

Educate yourself on the entire conflict before you publicly support terrorism.

Has Windows startup repair or a troubleshooter ever fixed your issue even once?

Yeah, basically that. I’m back at work in Windows land on a Monday morning, and pondering what sadist at Microsoft included these features. It’s not hyperbole to say that the startup repair, and the troubleshooters in settings, have never fixed an issue I’ve encountered with Windows. Not even once. Is this typical?...

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Not for me. I dual booted Fedora and W10 and W10 decided it could no longer boot.

Tried all those powershell commands to fix boot but no bueno. Gave up Windows after.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

In Canada you can buy hunting rifles at some Canadian Tires (think Target). You must get a PAL license and do some in-person firearms safety and training, store the rifle in a locked and certified gun locker, and can only carry it around to the range and for hunting.

It’s fairly strict on who gets a PAL (I can’t get one ever in my life because I was hospitalized for major depressive disorder when I was 18 and am 30 now).

Most people don’t care about guns here. They’re good for moose hunting and little air rifles are fun to shoot when one goes up to a cottage or something. There’s a small minority here that is very passionate about gun laws, but that same group also is usually very keen on the first and second amendment and often need to be reminded that those are American laws, not Canadian.

PerogiBoi,

What an incredibly out of touch comment. Do you live in Canada and do you pay for telecoms? Those are the going rates. Good luck getting an internet and phone plan for less than $200/month.

It’s not feasible to switch to small carriers like public mobile because they only have cell coverage in major cities. The moment you leave and go towards suburbs or rural you’re on roaming.

I’d like to see you suggest to someone in real life who’s living in Canada that they should use their bike in the winter to do groceries. The fact is, having a car in Canada (unless you live downtown in a city) is mandatory.

Also I know for a fact you have never done groceries in Canada because $400/month is BELOW average for households. In my house we always buy the basics and we spend around $650 per month. That’s with the cheapest versions of every item and we don’t buy processed foods.

Troll somewhere else.

Beanfield is only available to some condominium users in major downtown cities. It is not an available option to most Canadians, especially the vet tech in this article.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Definitely not the case. They serve suburbs and cities. I live semi rurally and they are not a possible option.

In Newfoundland, a handful of practitioners are taking on skyrocketing MAID requests (atlantic.ctvnews.ca)

But in the province’s eastern region, which includes the capital of St. John’s and is home to roughly three-fifths of the provincial population, the number of people seeking medically assisted death climbed from 16 in 2019 to 107 in 2022, McKim said in his briefing note. There were 37 requests in the first quarter of 2023....
