Nowyn,

There are two types of people you can donate to. Many instances have a way to donate to them to upkeep and upgrade costs. Then you can donate also for development of the project here join-lemmy.org/donate

Nowyn,

I had it but really had to scroll to the bottom. It was also not Reddit but articles saying it was the first result. Which is kind of ironic.

Nowyn,

While the number of wars is less than 20 years ago there is an uneven but increasing trend for the past decade. Last year casualties were also more than at least 89 apart from a huge spike in 94. Amount of refugees has also been increasing in the past decade a little bit faster than the world population has.

Despite these facts, globally things are not at least yet out of hand. At the same time, there are many countries, especially in the West where current politicians are dismantling social security nets and human rights legislation. We are also increasingly seeing the effect of climate change on conflicts and displacement. Famine is thankfully rarer than ever before but we are so badly behind on any environmental action that it is pretty much guaranteed to happen more and more. I might be less pessimistic if the climate crisis weren’t staring us right at our faces. In general, historically things have gotten better and better with some lows. If we had time, we could probably sort ourselves out. There are also a lot of very smart people that could help with the existential threat but after the past decade, I don’t trust that they will be allowed to fix it.

You can also only be almost completely anonymous if you know what you are doing. The majority of people don’t know how. While data gathered from default users might officially be anonymized, the amount of data collected will often make you pretty easily identified. Zero-click spyware that has already been used against political opponents while not relevant to most average Joes do exist.

The world can’t be pulled up by your bootstraps. Most defeating is that you can do anything in your power and things still get worse. Yes, I might have more than a touch of secondary trauma but activism these days feels like hitting your head on the wall repeatedly. You can’t stop people from dying. You risk ending up in jail in too many countries that you once thought were civilized. And you are once again marching again Nazis when they sit in parliament in too many countries.

Nowyn,

I didn’t say it is worse than it ever was. Just saying it is not the best it ever was either.

My perspective comes from the fact that I am an aid worker and human rights activist. This has nothing to do with online discourse. My perspective is also not only found in online echo chambers. It is common among my colleagues. I am not referring to Twitter dying. I don’t care about that. And yes, activism is at least in my field of activism pretty damn ineffective. That doesn’t mean we should stop trying.

Nowyn,

I might have to print it and put it on a lanyard. Or it sometimes feels like that.

New Vaccine Can Completely Reverse Autoimmune Diseases Like Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes, and Crohn’s Disease (scitechdaily.com)

Researchers from Pritzker Molecular Engineering, under the guidance of Prof. Jeffrey Hubbell, demonstrated that their compound can eliminate the autoimmune response linked to multiple sclerosis. Researchers at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) have developed

Nowyn,

I also have really complicated relationship with hope. Mainly, I try not to hope as my body seems to be insanely problematic. I am disabled with multiple autoimmune diseases and genetic syndrome. While objectively I find the advancement in treatment interesting and amazing, I personally try not to hope. It is absolutely exhausting to get your hopes up only for the other shoe to drop.

Nowyn,

The good thing for him is that he was so young when he was diagnosed that he probably doesn’t know anything else. Saying this from personal experience as I was diagnosed at 14 months in mid 80s. Of course, something like this would be amazing as I can’t tolerate even small amounts of accidental gluten but as I don’t know anything else I can’t even imagine anything else.

Nowyn,

I am 86 baby and you are one of the only very few people born in 80s or earlier that had really early adoption to computers in addition to me. I could use MS-DOS before I could write anything else as I also had had computer available since pretty much birth also because of my dads job.

Nowyn,

I call mine overeager and incompetent. It likes to attack everything but what it is supposed to attack. The running tally of autoimmune diseases is currently at 4. It is bad enough that I am eating medication that is used also in higher doses for chemotherapy. In other words, if I trusted my immune system I would have died long ago as it also doesn’t really function against infections either.

Nowyn,

One of mine is also lupus. Thankfully it has mostly spared internal organs but it really likes skin and veins in addition to joints in my case, veins being the biggest problem. I also have EDS so the genetic lottery really didn’t like me. I joke with my friends that someone should tell my body that diseases are not Pokemons.

Reddit users are reporting Christian websites for violating Virginia's new porn identification law, citing vulgar passages in the Bible (www.insider.com)

As more and more states pass laws targeting "pornographic material" in books and online, they are repeatedly running up against a problem: The Bible has not just a few passages that could be considered indecent

Nowyn,

No one said the people running it are competent.

What's a skill that's taken for granted where you live, but is often missing in people moving there from abroad?

I was thinking about that when I was dropping my 6 year old off at some hobbies earlier - it’s pretty much expected to have learned how to ride a bicycle before starting school, and it massively expands the area you can go to by yourself. When she went to school by bicycle she can easily make a detour via a shop to spend some...

Nowyn,

Starting fire is pretty relevant skill in Finland for multiple reasons from saunas to cabins to campfires. While I partially learned at home, scouts are pretty good here and definitely taught me a lot of wilderness and survival skills.

Nowyn,

I am crossing this divide now. I have secondary education but no university and I am working to get to med school now (In Finland it is a combined undergrad and med school). I think I can do it but I don’t really know how to study. I know how to learn but learning in schedule is the issue. I was too ill to go to university when I should have and I could have gone to easier courses I could have gone to without an entrance exam and done OK but I always wanted medicine. Or well, I not easier but easier to get into like maths. After I got better I ended up in aid work, and stopping that is really hard. But I still want to become a doctor so I am trying now in my thirties. Having what looks like undiagnosed ADHD that is now under investigation and crappy childhood might explain part of why I never became what people felt I should have but the fact that I never had to learn to study because I didn’t need to get through is up there.

I try to remember that our education does not mean anything for our value, but it seems hard when it comes to you.

Nowyn,

It is also not always about our intelligence but our skill set. I rarely have hard time learning when I want, but issue in my case has been in addition to probable ADHD and mental health issues that the system wasn’t designed to teach me studying.

Nowyn,

I think having a digital ID system is very important in the modern age but where it is required needs to be limited. You should not need to use it where it isn’t strictly necessary. We have one in Finland too. You will almost entirely use it to use official services that would need your ID in person as well. In this proposal, the issue is not digital ID but how it would be used. First, where it would be used could compromise revealing too much of your identity when you want privacy and secondly and more importantly, it could compromise revealing your private actions to the government. Latter can move into highly problematic territory when criminalizing actions that should not be criminalized.

Finland arrests Russian ultra-nationalist wanted in Ukraine for war crimes (meduza.io)

Finnish police have arrested the Russian Yan Petrovsky, a leader of neo-Nazi paramilitary group “Task Force Rusich,” who is wanted in Ukraine on suspicion of committing war crimes in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014–2015. According to media reports, Kyiv has already requested Petrovsky’s extradition.

Nowyn,

Fits because even Finnish Nazis don’t seem to know it.

Nowyn,

History fits the majority of Eastern European countries but yes as said they are Estonian. Actually, now that I think about it can’t really think of any Eastern European countries that it doesn’t fit at all.

Nowyn,

I think the beauty of Fediverse is that the majority of people can find pretty amazing instances for themselves. I could say the same of mine.

Nowyn,

Not in America only but how bad it is depends on the country. In most, even when things are miles better, if you are a racial minority or other minority, the likelihood of cops doing shit goes higher. In mine, I can’t remember a case where people have been killed in these situations but I do know a lot of cases of structural and open racism. In other countries I have lived in, it can get a lot worse.

Nowyn,

Do you also do historical reenactment or just sword fighting? I never personally got into the fighting side of things but the former has been one of my favourite hobbies for decades.

Nowyn,

At least in Europe, a lot of people find sparring partners through historical reenactment groups. I encourage you to join reenactments for other reasons too.

Nowyn,

In addition to general learning which might be my favourite, I have multiple.

Maybe the most niche is a historical reenactment and historical costuming. Latter usually based on extant garments or garment finds. I try to get as close to the original in techniques, tools and materials using the best evidence I can find.

I also plan things that will never happen. I decorate houses and apartments on paper. I make extensive plans for travel that I can never afford unless I win in Lottory. Which I even never play.

I spend absolutely too much time playing with spreadsheets.

Nowyn,

People have no idea what it means. Like no grasp even when stories are everywhere. I’m an aid worker. Focusing on refugees. They can’t even imagine what they go through and what the people who never got to me/safety survived until unsurvivable came in front of them.

Nowyn,

But they don’t actually want to help long term. They see collapse as a chance to seize power for their own benefit as even the loose control we have to check the power of the powerful is too much for them.

Nowyn,

I get it. Part of my job is human rights advocacy. It is highly depressive and is getting to the point where I don’t really think we can change things really for the better in at least the next decades. If we had fewer existential threats I would think based on history that the day when we again decide human rights are a good idea would come again. I am purely doing it for the belief that defending human rights even when not changing anything is worth it.

Nowyn,

My personal favourites from Finnish.

“Ei ole kaikki muumit Muumilaaksossa” “Not having all the Moomins in Moomin Valley” Used for people who are either stupid or lack sanity. There are other variants of this and Moomin one is not older than a couple of decades.

I find our version of Grammar Nazi pretty great. We call them comma fuckers.

“Ei voi kauhalla ottaa jos on lusikalla annettu” “You can’t take with a ladle if it was given with a spoon”. This refers also to a lack of something, usually a lack of intelligence or sense.

Nowyn,

Just be warned Moomins are a gateway to communism (Weird internet theory). Or at least to more Moomins. We literally have Moomin everything here.

Nowyn,

In Finnish. Pilkunnussija is the word.

Nowyn,

They played too much WoW.

No, but seriously, calling people whatever they like is OK. As another Millenial, at least in my corner, we all had some kind of nicks and they came to real life. I have a lot of friends who still go by their nicknames from decades ago. I also changed my own name a little and am currently almost exclusively known by that name. I don’t go around telling people why but my name is connected to trauma quite strongly. I can even go further in my family history to have an example of how people have been doing that always. My grandma was called by two names. She moved to the city and decided to go by another name. I was a little bit confused as a kid when my great-aunt called and asked her by a name I had never heard before. I might understand not calling someone something offensive, but Kalcifer is quite mild. In the end, it doesn’t hurt anyone and is a tool for building your identity.

Nowyn,

Would have suggested it but Calcifer is written with C in Howl’s Moving Castle.

Nowyn,

They do, and funnily in Finnish, they are called hyttynen while one diminutive is -nen. The question is what the fuck is hytty.

Nowyn,

Hmm. I have been moving towards more and more open source. But my ability to code is very limited. Is there any kind of guide on how to get involved when you can’t code?

Nowyn,

Thank you! This really does point me in the right direction.

And as an aside, I absolutely love how welcoming the open source community is.

Nowyn,

I played being a bureaucrat. I became woke moralist. Well, kind of.

Nowyn,

They did. They are required to be on all phones sold in EU 2027.

Nowyn,

Immunotherapy is also often called cancer treatment vaccine. And HepB vaccine also protects from liver cancer associated with Hep B.

Nowyn,

This goes with being mRNA free that some anti-vaccine people tout around. They did their research well enough not to figure out what mRNA is.

Nowyn,

It is easy to say when it is not you. Unless you are in that exact situation their complexities mean that you really shouldn’t judge others for the approaches they take. Even if you would take the risk, judging others when they wouldn’t is not really a good policy.

Nowyn,

Because people both under and overestimate organized crime. It is a weird beast. The majority of people don’t run into them in a way they know it. And when you for some reason do, you learn to shut your mouth entirely or apart from the need-to-know basis depending on your cause to have run-ins with them. Not always because you think they are going to retaliate but from pretty complex reasons.

Nowyn,

Maybe because it was a left versus right conflict leading to decades of Franco’s more or less fascist dictatorship.

Nowyn,

I’m so, so, so sorry. My infraorbital nerve runs through my maxillary sinus and I had really fucking bad 3-month sinus infection that caused nerve pain on that isolated nerve (among a lot of other things). I can’t imagine how you are dealing with this even though I do have nerve pain elsewhere.

Nowyn,

Add me to the list with a side of furiously searching for security and privacy of cloud storage services and figuring out which Linux I want to use. I’m shaking my head at how complacent I got with my services. I always do my due diligence when starting to use anything but I somehow forgot to keep up in the past couple of years.

Nowyn,

To be fair to America, I don’t think there are any sane countries left. Finland had an actual neo-Nazi as minister and while it didn’t last longer than Truss or even half of it, the party that is ministerial party is still there with similar ideas. They just had forethought to not write 14/88 in an old electoral ad. We are tied for first place still in the least corrupt countries and 5th in most democratic countries.

Nowyn,

As mentioned self-hosted Nextcloud is an option but as my ability to keep things from breaking is really limited which is a big reason why I use the cloud, I am moving on Sync. Other cloud services people often recommend are NordLocker and Tresorit.

Nowyn,

NordLocker was part of Nord Security external ISO27001 audit in 2022. Of course, being closed-source software you can’t really know security fully. The biggest concern seems however to be the encryption model they use in addition to being closed source. However, for example, hosting my own cloud service while most secure really isn’t the option that would answer the reason I use cloud service.

I am not saying use it. I am saying it often gets recommended. I really do think people should do their own research on if things are best fit for them. I am having a huge issue finding actually secure solutions that are not self-hosted and FOSS or at least open source. Nextcloud which is fully hosted by service or on your own bought server space has some concerns as well.

Nowyn,

It has been about 20 days for me. But I hardly miss Reddit. While my niches aren’t niche enough here yet, I am actually having somewhat meaningful discussions.

Admittedly I just took a huge jump and changed so many platforms, devices and software this month that I might not even notice the intricacies.

There are still people for who this was in living memory rule (lemmy.tf)

People always talk about the oppression as ancient history, but it has been perpetual for many groups, not just limited to indigenous. Allotment ran until 1934, giving away native lands. After that they moved to Termination, where they tried to dissolve reservations and negate treaties.

Nowyn,

You are absolutely right that we need to recognize both genocidal and oppressive policies in our countries and where possible restitute people or their descendants, the majority of society usually did directly contribute to those policies. However the case example by the person that answered you is actually more relevant than you would think. While we can’t make our ancestors pay for their direct and indirect crimes, oppressed people who make use of horrendous policies should be exempt even in the level of thought.

To give a modern-day example of international law. Asylum seekers can’t legally be punished by the mode of entry. Not because it changes it into a good thing but because oppressed people have so few options that are sane.

Reconciling and instituting is also not enough by a mile. We as Western countries need to stop these inhumane policies. I am not American. But mine while being better than most (based on rankings not my opinion) has shit ton issues.

Nowyn,

Things either need to be really, really bad and people are done or we need to find what they care about more than being comfortable. I was not always politically active. It took until my late twenties and seeing how bad things can really be. I have been an activist on the human rights front for about a decade. And it only happened because I really saw the issues in my country and continent. But while my family knows as I make sure they know, and some kind of care, it is not important enough for them.

But weirdly. My country had literal neo-Nazis as a minister and everyone with a brain thinks we still do as bids of the same feather and so on. And suddenly my leftist but not active friends became active, online and outside that. It is weird when I have been warning that this is the road we are on for the better part of a decade it took it to happen for people to take action. Thankfully we are still solidly democratic so this might work. At least for a few years.
