I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...
I don't mind those so much-- for me it's more annoying when they assume their instance/platform is the only one; for example, "How do you cross post" or "should we implement so-and-so feature?" without mentioning the platform being discussed. It's simple enough to determine what instance/platform the user is from, but it's still a little annoying.
First time, huh? Pay attention on any site, if something doesn't mention the origin of some organization, place or whatever, then it's about murica, even if its name is neutral and common. Same for users, they are all from murica until proven otherwise.
There are two now but there could be many more projects in the future, the little ones often end up ignored. There's not much to do about it other than get used to it... or be the preacher that no one wants to hear.
The Supreme Court rejected the independent state legislature theory in a bombshell decision Tuesday, turning back a right-wing attempt to vest the sole power in administering federal elections with state legislatures.
"the availability and diversity of fresh produce would decline substantially, and human nutrition would likely suffer. Crops that would not be cost-effective to hand- or robot-pollinate would likely be lost or persist only with the dedication of human hobbyists."
"In Europe alone, 84% of the 264 crop species and 4,000 plant varieties exist thanks to pollination by bees. Some attribute the following quote to Albert Einstein: "If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.""
Bees are very important, you kill them off and Humans would die
Allowing the mass scale production and deployment of chemicals that kill bees really is the real life version of feeding crops with Brawno in Idiocracy.
Bats are responsible for a lot of pollination too.
Most of our essential crops are wind pollinated (e.g. rice, wheat, corn) or asexual (potatoes). Colony collapse disorder is a real problem of course and colony management/replacement really eats into profitability, but domesticated bees won't become extinct because we so intensively manage them - however other species may be in real trouble. In addition, if we remove the main human causes of colony collapse (neonicotinoids?), they can potentially recover quite quickly, so it's not a problem that takes hundreds or thousands of years to fix, like some others - if we have the will to do it.
Are we being pedantic about the definition of species? Mosquitos from the Anopheles genus (and only those species) spread malaria. They’re humanity’s #1 killer.
Driving them and the other mosquito species that spread human disease (Aedes spread dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya) should be seriously considered.
Oceanic plankton produces like half of the world's oxygen. Trees get too much credit. I'm not sure what the exact impact of losing so much oxygen would be, but... Not good?
I don't get why people are clinging to the idea that reddit will suddenly give a fuck. They are unprofessional, rude, liars. It doesn't matter if they bend down and kiss your ass with a million false promises. They won't follow through.
Look at what happened to interestingasfuck, they are approaching a week with no mods and completely locked down. You can easily make reddit implode themselves with their hubris of mods being easily replaceable. They have shown that is not true. Y'all will be removed anyway before the IPO, they won't risk this again. So hurry up and let them implode before they have time to figure out an alternative before the IPO
The pitch for federalization gives the misleading impression that the system provides a universal (or at least portable) account mechanism. It seems to be a common point of uncertainty with users taking a look at the emerging platform.
From a usability standpoint, the sign-in process ought to be able to tell when someone is trying to join from a non-local instance, and provide means to redirect or authenticate them appropriately. Maybe something in the style of "Sign in with Google," only simpler.
I think upcoming versions of Lemmy/Kbin are attempting to improve link behavior to make it less likely to unintentionally stray from your home instance.

IMO every game on first launch should solicit these options:
resolution
vsync
subtitles
brightness
colorblind/accessibility options
Most times going into settings are to change one of those options, so why not quickly let the player set them all at once on the get-go? There's a 99% chance at least one of those options will need to change for the player/machine needs.
