At what point is violence on a large scale justified?

I know this is a really vague question, but it’s been on my mind A LOT lately. I’m specifically asking about people fighting on behalf of a group that is subject to oppression of some kind. 3 years ago, with all of the protests in America that included violence majorly against property and minorly against people but were...

Dietrich Bonhoeffer has written some excellent thoughts about this topic.

I recommend the German original texts. There are also English and other translations available.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Never be afraid to say that you’d escalate the issue but KEEP OWNERSHIP. Ownership is huge to these people.

Your advice is great in general, but procedures may vary. When I worked in professional IT support, we have often transferred ownership to the next level group, together with the escalation.

But then our customers were all professional IT guys too, devs, admins, sometimes managers. No whining panicking end users :-)

people have really unsecure pins.

Ok but what’s unsecure with ‘1111’ as long as I’m not telling the order of the digits to anybody?

NeoNachtwaechter,

I’m confused. Teachers/professors have said that using AI to detect papers written by AI is highly unreliable.

Probably 99% of fake reviews have not been written by AI. Just copy/paste bots or cheap copy/paste workers.

NeoNachtwaechter,

if you don’t have any family that posts videos to Facebook/socials you are in a safer place?

You are safe only if you don’t have any people at all whom you trust.

But then you are having some other problems…

NeoNachtwaechter,

I have actually tried and practised that when I was a kid :-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

NeoNachtwaechter,

[…] you aren’t willing to pay a subscription, then why do you think you’re entitled to content?

You CANNOT pay for your content there, even if you want to.

Has it never occurred to you that YouTube gets all their content FOR FREE?

You can only pay to make Google even richer. That’s all your money can do there. Nothing else.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Yes, I make Alphabet x dollars richer

A tiny cut of it goes to content creators

No. That was my point. Don’t you know their business model? The creators get a tiny share of the paid ads on their video, and they get nothing at all if there are no ads playing on their video. They can never get a share from your payment.

Proxmox VM's hanging when one has issues

I’ve noticed that sometimes when a particular VM/ service is having issues, they all seem to hang. For example, I have a VM hosting my DNS (pihole) and another hosting my media server (jellyfin). If Jellyfin crashes for some reason, my internet in the entire house also goes down because it seems DNS is unable to be reached for...

NeoNachtwaechter,

Your services may run in separate VMs, but there are still some dependencies between them. You need to know, and think about, all the dependencies between your VMs.

For example, they share a common network interface (the one of the host machine). That is a dependency. If one VM is able to clog the network interface (and maybe your crashing one is doing exactly that), then it is clogged for all the other VMs too.

To resolve that dependency, you can either put another network interface card in your host machine and let only the pihole VM use it, or run the pihole on a real physical Pi.

You could also resolve the jellyfin’s own problem. But resolving the dependency might give you a more reliable system.

NeoNachtwaechter,

There are 6 Windows machines in my family and 11 Linux machines. Generously including the Androids for the purpose of statistics. Not counting the virtual machines.

Both systems can be called mainstream, I guess.

Is it okay to support Israel?

Hello I just created this Account for this Question. Is it okay to support Israel in the middle east conflict? I’m from Europe and have no ties at all to any Side. Its just that I lean more to the Side of Israel then any other. Is this okay? Is it up to debate which Side is to support or is one of them clearly in the Wrong?...

NeoNachtwaechter,

This conflict is so old now that it is absolutely safe to say: both sides are somewhat right and somewhat wrong.

Having said that, and because we are in such a special sub here: if you support Israel, you get entitled for Jewish heaven later! :-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

NeoNachtwaechter,

Just for fun: Assuming the motion of the string travels at the speed of sound (I have no idea if it actually would, it just sounds right)

It is true in principle. But the speed of sound is different, depending on the material. For that string we can assume it to be roughly 10 times faster than in the air.

would be about 10.5 hours between you pulling the string and the bell ringing

~ 1 hour then.

NeoNachtwaechter,

need to be able to pull 11ish tons of string to ring the bell

But the weight of the string isn’t the force you need to pull.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Assuming no compression

Compression and expansion is real. The first part of the string moves with your hand, at the same speed as your hand moves. But then it takes some time until further parts of the string - or the final part of the string - even start with their motion. Ok? And here we were talking about how fast this “beginning of the motion” travels forward through the string. That’s the speed of sound.

NeoNachtwaechter, (edited )

Why not?

When you want to lift it up vertically, then the force that you need is exactly the same as the weight.

But when you push or pull it forward on a surface, you need a different force.

Push a golf ball on the table: you need very small force, much less than it’s weight. Suck the same golf ball through a garden hose: you need much more force.

You want to look up “coefficient of friction” in your books.

NeoNachtwaechter,

The speed of light is so much faster than the speed of sound, and that’s why sometimes you think someone is bright at first until you hear them talk.

:-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

Okay, but what if there is no compression or expansion?

That means, the speed of sound is infinite in your material. It doesn’t happen in this world.

Badly [re-]titled ArsTechnica article warns of large multi-vector malware incursions in IoT and personal devices suspected to be Chinese in origin (arstechnica.com)

“In total the researchers confirmed eight devices with backdoors installed—seven TV boxes, the T95, T95Z, T95MAX, X88, Q9, X12PLUS, and MXQ Pro 5G, and a tablet J5-W. (Some of these have also been identified by other security researchers looking into the issue in recent months).”...

NeoNachtwaechter,

Clarifying “Android” here feels misleading

Not at all for anybody who knows “Android TV” is an operating system.

You could also say "cheap Chinese TV boxes

You could also say “Wrzldrmpft with BBQ sauce”.

Android TV is installed on TVs, projectors, small boxes, big boxes, round boxes, triangled boxes, californian boxes, chinese boxes…

NeoNachtwaechter,

There’s an android app called “Dicio” on F-Droid. It has only very few skills currently, but it looks promising.

NeoNachtwaechter,

logicians must be weird people who always know whether they want a beer or not.

Don’t you think you should have made up your mind at that point when the barkeeper asks you? :-)

At least when it says logicians, I expect them to know. Weird people are the others, those who don’t know.

NeoNachtwaechter,

NeoNachtwaechter,

NeoNachtwaechter,

I’m already tighter with my money than a dolphins asshole.

Very nicely put :-)

But still an illusion. You are still a true and well adapted consumer, connected to all your pipes in The Matrix.

Saying that you are tight is equal to saying that you feel powerless, because all your money=power is owned by somebody else.

You are actually consuming. You are actually spending your money. You feel like you have no choice, but you have - if you only recognized it.

NeoNachtwaechter,

What are you doing in an echo chamber (or wall, or similar situation) in real life? You clap your hands. It is the first and easiest thing.

**We should stop all low effort posts. **

They are just handclapping, the easiest way to produce an echo.

Note that this includes all posts that consist only of an external link with no own explanation or comment.

NeoNachtwaechter,

So what about posts that just link to a news article?

Yes, they are made with very low effort. And most of these posts want to promote something. This is ‘echo chamber’ at it’s best.

If you want to discuss that topic, then you would simply write your thoughts to the link with your post.

NeoNachtwaechter,

end of the world

You need a different way of thinking.

You are leaning towards something like fatalism or cynicism, but these attitudes are never helpful (only for your feeling, if you like to feel superior even if you are not).

election frauds / riots / etc in the US, global warming / severe weather increasing, capitalism

Problems getting worse indicate that mankind is getting worse. Technology cannot fix it. Man needs to get fixed.

NeoNachtwaechter,

if everyone was a drooling idiot and still had access to nukes

Think about this:

Regarding the group of people having access to the buttons that start the nukes, I can’t help the feeling that the percentage of idiots is much higher there than it is among average people.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Nah, there is no lack of punishment anywhere

NeoNachtwaechter,

suggests you can’t ever discern ai vs. human-made.

No, it just suggests that this one result has no significance in this one test.

Only if all your results show an average of 50:50 you can make your conclusion.

NeoNachtwaechter,

11/20 but many times I wasn’t sure, and most times I thought that this pic doesn’t belong into such a survey, because it is too simple.

The survey question is more meaningful when it’s about photorealistic images. Simple advertising graphics are meaningless either way.

NeoNachtwaechter,

12 steps downstairs, and that’s it. Yes, I like it that way.

NeoNachtwaechter,

The key to the solution here is to forget (for a while) the money and the cooking and the cleaning, because they are secondary questions.

Primary are the wanting, the expecting, and the talking about these.

Start with talking. Talk about talking. Then talk about wanting and about expecting.

But never want without talking about it, and never expect without talking about it.

NeoNachtwaechter,

“Do nothing” is usually not that bad an approach

That doesn’t get any truer even if you repeat it a few more times.

Truth is that a general approach was not sufficient here. This cars programming was NOT good enough. It has made a bad decision with bad consequences.

NeoNachtwaechter,

What are the odds

Wrong question.

If you want autonomous cars outside in the real world (as opposed to artificial lab and test scenarios), then they have to deal with real world situations. This situation has happened in reality. You don’t need to ask about odds anymore.

how can the car know which situation it’s currently in?

That is an engineering question. A good one. And again one of these that should have been solved before they let this car out into the real world.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Theme from ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ by Ennio Morricone.

NeoNachtwaechter,

“No”: I am doing it without preferring it…

:-)

NeoNachtwaechter,

Techstage? Echt jetzt? Flacher gent’s nicht.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Testet TechStage falsch?

NeoNachtwaechter,

“effort to compensate” my ass.

I call it fraud.
