Mesophar,

Mesophar,

Get a cheap 1-2 tb drive and start dual-booting with whatever system you’re running now. This way you can play around with different distros while retaining your current settup to fall back on!

Mesophar,

It wouldn’t be the most ideal, but you can dual-boot with an external drive. There are external SSDs that are meant for running programs/games off of them, and would look into those for best performance.

Alternatively, if you have plenty of unused storage on the laptop you can partition some of that for use, but a second drive is usually preferred.

enzoesco, to fediverse Italian

Are you curious about Mastodon? Mammoth, the Google-funded app*, could be the app that will use all of you to destroy the Fediverse

I would like to know what you think of this post published here in Italian: is it exaggerated or is there a grain of truth?

@fediverse

Are you curious about Mastodon? Mammoth, the Google-funded app, could be the app that will use all of you to destroy the Fediverse*

Dear friends of decentralization, welcome to the end of the world!

One of the most serious limitations of Mastodon (not to mention other obscene software, such as the cumbersome Friendica or the toy Misskey) is that... it sucks!

No it's not true, it doesn't suck, in fact it has improved the ergonomics a lot, but compared to commercial social networks it still seems to be several years behind.

At the moment only Bluesky seems to do worse, but in that case we are actually talking about a dead fetus kept artificially alive by American journalists, so it's a bit out of competition...

** Did you want to know why I titled it “funded by Google”?*

The app is definitely well made and has some interesting new features.

The updated app will introduce a number of features designed to appeal to former X users, including personalized suggestions of accounts to follow, to help you rebuild your network on Mastodon, as well as curated “smart lists” that help you find interesting conversations that take place on Mastodon.

Mammoth will also integrate with the editorial staff of Flipboard, the social magazine app for curating news on topics from across the web through accounts such as News , Tech , Culture and Science. And it is a partner with Newsmast , another curator of news and communities on Mastodon, as well as Press.coop, which imports feeds from popular news websites into Mastodon. These integrations allow Mammoth 2 to create a number of other “smart lists,” including those for News, World News, Business, Tech, Environment, and Nature.

From Sarah Perez's article published December 7 on TechCrunch

In short, to use Mastodon more easily, users will give up the most important aspect offered by Mastodon: decentralization!

That's how: following other people's lists, integrating rubbish like Newsmast (one of the projects most oriented towards the Anglospheric centralization of news which is starting to have some singers even in the Italian Fediverse), everything we always wanted to avoid by migrating from Twitter to Mastodon!

I won't hide from you that seeing Mammoth become so popular in some way in the last few days is truly disheartening: a campaign of a few thousand dollars is enough to infest the entire Fediverse with the editorials of a small US company.

By the way, many of Mammoth's features had already been implemented by IceCubes . Not to mention, IceCubes has always been free and open source!

Mammoth has also become open source. But when you launch it, the first thing it does (how horrible!) is make you automatically follow their account (I got visual messages on the new features screen, but I wasn't able to stop the following on that screen) and they a very shitty icon similar to that of Threads.

Most concerning though is their SmartLists feature: send your handle to their official moth.social instance, which uses a Mastodon fork that serves the “Smart Lists” feature. One can reasonably see how this undermines decentralization…

A final bitter consideration? It's not true that we always want to ruin the beautiful things we have. But unfortunately it is true that we always have this overwhelming desire to help anyone who wants to ruin what we have. As long as he is rich, beautiful and powerful…

Mesophar,

I didn’t even know Mammoth existed until I saw this post

Mesophar,

I just did this with my desktop pc when I added a second drive for additional storage. Instead of using it as additional storage for windows like I initially intended, I decided to dual boot with Mint on the second drive.

So far, I haven’t had any issue with gaming on Mint, either! Granted, most of the games I play are through Steam and either work with Proton or are native Linux to begin with. I did install a few games with Lutris, though, and works fine so far. Sea of Thieves, Astroneer, Slay the Spire, Deep Rock Galactic, are all working out of the box.

Only thing I haven’t attempted yet are multiplayer games with active anti-cheat, like LoL or CS:2. If those are the sorts of games you regularly play, you’ll probably be better off in the Windows partition/drive, but have fun experimenting in Linux!

Mesophar,

Looks like there are a few issues with BG3, but will probably be smoothed with time.

At least according to ProtonDB

Definitely worth keeping access to a Windows machine if able, but doesn’t seem like it’s impossible without.

Mesophar,

In theory you should be able to do that! I think Proton has some issues with NTFS, mostly when installing or updating, but with a little research and tweaking you should be able to get it to run smoothly. I opted to keep them fully separate and just installed certain games twice, but am also using this as a test run before diving into full daily driver Linux when I build a new system in the spring, so longevity of my storage drives wasn’t a concern.

how similar are other North American countries to USA??

I mean the other 2 countries, Canada and Mexico, how similar are both of them to United States?? Both countries have a similar economy and democracy etc, and I think those two countries share things like supermarkets, stores, etc. I suppose the cultural differences are not a lot, that is very nice.

Mesophar,

What, pray tell, is your definition of culture? Are local cuisine and regional delicacies a part of it? How about accents, speech patterns, and slang/dialects? You mention architecture and cities, so do layouts of cities, differences in urban planning ideologies, planned vs organic growth, or style of buildings get accepted as culture?

If you’re going to dismiss any social differences between cities, then what is the difference or culture between any two modern cities in Amwrica, Europe, Asia, or anywhere else, other than the language they speak?

“If you ignore the culture, this city has no culture!”

Mesophar,

Let’s get something straight right here, rape culture is not simply doing something that someone else has expressed a distaste for. Going into a public forum that you do not own or have control over, asking/telling the people there to act a certain way, and them responding by ignoring that request is not rape culture.

If it was a more private situation, like a group chat among friends, or even a public forum but an individual discussion between a small group of 2-3 people talking directly to each other, respect should be given to requests. If you were having a back and forth conversation with someone, and asked them not to swear while talking with you, they should respect that. But coming into public forum and demanding everyone else adhere to your rules, then spouting “rape culture” if they don’t follow along, is only cheapening the phrase “rape culture” and removing meaning from it.

Mesophar,

Yeah, like, I noticed the WWE logo right away but assumed that was simply where the image of the woman was sourced from, and not intended as part of the joke. I didn’t take any physical violence tones from it at all.

Couple have argument

Woman leaves room, expecting to be chased

Man decides to play games instead

Woman has shocked Pikachu face

The Woman wanting to be chased is definitely childish, and possibly emotional manipulation, but I don’t think it’s intentional manipulation. At least, there isn’t enough context in the images alone to say that with certainty. Definitely a bit of a leap.

Mesophar,

From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.

So the Barbarian gets all the d12s, is what I’m hearing

Mesophar,

The statistic says 1/3 of homeless population has issues with drugs/alcohol, and 2/3 of that 1/3 (or 2/9) have lifetime histories of abuse…

Mesophar,

This premise and the HumanityFuckYeah is what originally brought me to Reddit. There’s a lemmy for it, too, but it isnt as active

lemmy.world/c/hfy

Maybe if we get more interest we can build it up!

Mesophar,

Didn’t get that comment out Swift enough

Mesophar,

Had a costume contest at work and I ended up winning, so that was nice! It also felt good getting complimented on the costume all day. Otherwise, it was a fairly normal day. No party or trick-or-treating after work, and roommates ordered Thai food for dinner.

Mesophar,

You’ve got to remember that these are just simple twitter posts. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new social media age. You know… morons.

Mesophar,

Mongo only pawn in game of life

Mesophar,

Look, not even getting into the cause of his death, it’s extremely fucked up that they didn’t attempt to contact family of the deceased after he died, and even covered it up and had it from his mother after she approached them for information.

You can say it was his own fault all you want, but that changes nothing about how atrocious they handled the whole thing.

Mesophar,

I think what you’re getting at is that the publicity generated by flashy boycott activism only generates free advertising for the companies. Which it certainly can! But that’s also dependent on what is being boycotted and the social and political beliefs behind it. If one group boycotts a product because the company is homophobic, another group buys more of that product because they agree with the company. That sort of thing.

But it isn’t as two dimensional as “boycotting has the opposite effect”. Here are some examples of effective boycotting. Though you did get me interested in how effective boycotting really is, but I couldn’t find any efficacy studies that weren’t behind a paywall…

Mesophar,

Invisible sky friend works in mysterious ways

Mesophar,

Can I get a Rock and Stone?!

Mesophar,

Ok, but could you imagine trying to get this user to get a password from SMS? They’d probably get a text from their friend at the same time and not understand.

“I tried every variation of ‘miss you ttys’ for the password, but nothing is working!”

(Hopefully obvious it’s just joking)

Mesophar,

I vaguely remember this story as well. It was from an alien’s perspective that was an attaché for an ambassador or diplomat that was approaching the Humans to ask them for help with the threat, or something along those lines, right?
